Rwanda 50 Mile Ride - 2018

I had a good time hanging with @UPSed for the 50, and then we all hung out and harassed @Mikie and @Voodoo Tom for a few hours at the snazzy IMTB tent. It's always nice to meet new IMTBers, and reconnect with some of the old ones.

Fun time.

@herzalot @mtnbikej @UPSed - 8:00 meet time at Wahoos tomorrow?

Ed, the parking right in front of Wahoo's is off limits to our kind, but there is plenty of parking farther back in the lot. Tacos afterwards?

Works for me.

Haha! That didn't take long.

It was a great ride today! @Faust29 pushed the pace all day. I think it was the fastest paced MTB ride I have done to date. Too bad I was pushing that fat 29x2.6. I felt it the whole way. Lesson learned.

8am is perfect. We have to be out of here by 1 so we are hoping to be finished in time for tacos and a shower. Back at the motel of course.

W-L-W takes 2:30 - at a social pace with regroups and BS ing, and the anticipated Borrego nightmare hiker traffic. Some were talking about hitting some extra credit above the Luge, but that seems like a game-time decision. Some may, some may not.

Good ride today. Decided to push myself at the last minute and take off with the lead pack. Haha. Well it last a while, then I blew up, then my second wind kicked in. Overall ride time was something like 3:50.

Spotted J along Ladera Ridge coming the opposite direction. Rode solo most of the day suffering. I feel like I should have hung back and enjoyed myself a little more. Next year.

Finally got to meet a bunch of IMTB folks and talk a little broken shoulder with mtbikej. Didnt take any pics, I was just trying to survive as this was my longest ride to date. I wish I could've chatted longer, but the people I was with were planted in the beer garden. Very well run event with lots of volunteers for a good cause. Makes it easy to comeback and do it again next year.

Good to see you out there.

Awesome day!
Met even MORE imtbtrails hooligans. It was fun having the booth and giving a place to hang out. Wish we could have had a 10x20 booth area!
Class act event. Definitely want to come back.
Huge shout out to Suzanne @horsebikerider for setting me up, and thanks so much to @Voodoo Tom for making the trip down and back, bud... you are the BEST!
I’ll post some pics and throw some more names of who is who tomorrow!

I ran a 2.4 Ardent up front and 2.35 Ardent Race out back today. They roll pretty darn well....I smoked most of last year's times when I used an Ardent 2.25 front & rear....but I still felt it. I will probably never beat most of the times I got riding just the Caspers portion with @mtnbikej and @Faust29 a couple years ago. Just because that was a shorter overall ride.

2.35 Forekasters front and back... Same setup as for Vision Quest. The Forekaster in the rear is probably overkill, even for the loose stuff in the Santa Anas, but light XC rear tires and I do not get along.

One bottle of Tailwind on the bike worked, and got me to the second aid station. If we had gone at a social pace, or if the weather had been warmer, I would have needed two. Thoughts for next year...

Rwanda 2018
Shortest, event filled, unfinished ride ever. Got out a bit early with Shrek to loosen up with a prelap of Vista. Top of Live Oak he had a mechanical. Long time to fix, head down the road instead of Vista. Running late for Sweep duty we headed up Live Oak again. Sweep 1 had cleared markers so down Vista we go...and I mean down. The steep rocky section near the end didn’t end well for Shrek. I stopped at the bottom for him just in case when I heard it . OTB and roll, with groaning included. Walk/roll to the ranger station. HUGE props to ranger Dianna(I think). She gave him a look over for dilated eyes..yep. She drives both of us back to the start so we can go to ER closest to his home. Los Alamitos ER. Off to ER in his VW bus which was a bit challenging finding gears while he yells. . X-rays, ct scan, a sandwich, and meds. I left him after his wife was there even though he said to just ‘drop me off’...uh NO. Heard back last night he was sleeping and got a snarky text this am.

The whole time in ER, which was not too long he kept saying this isn’t bad. Last year he was at Los Alamitos for chemo to beat down Leukemia. He’s got a great attitude that will hopefully include thinking about bike maintenance to prevent future crashes. He did have his Team Crash jersey on!

Final tally:
Broken collarbone
Concussion
Dead helmet that did its job
Bent front brake lever
Flat front tire
Possible derailleur hanger bent

Props to all that helped him including the retired fire guy at the end who did a brief look over. The bike community is strong.

Props to Dwayne and Bob1 for getting my car back to me.

*I think we win worst sweeps ever..never finished. If u see any trail markers out in O’Neil around Twisty Tire please remove for us.

Or it didn't happen...

Hanging out at the imtbtrails/imtbgear/Tailwinds Booth. (This is getting confusing!) We had PLENTY of Tailwinds for your every need...

Not exactly sure what's going on with @UPSed here. I'm guessing a "Here's Johnny!" Jack Nicholson Moment...:rolleyes:o_O (Reminds me of that fine pic moment of me on the Cannell Plunge, ha hah!)

@Faust29 and me discussing his brilliant plan for a variety pack. Yes, it was his idea.
