The sign that I am smitten by wheel building? All I see when I look at this pic is the spoke pattern :)

The one thing that upsets me about being finished building my new bike is that I don't have any more wheels to build :(

I myself am looking past the wheels and tires. Who keeps that stock??? :gag: I really don't like the tires, but some kind of deal will come, they always do.;)

I am glad you mentioned the wheels B. I guess there is something odd or different about the spacing on these wheels. Now that I know you're a wheel w,..guru wheel guru, maybe you can help me sort that out when I do replace them??? :geek:

I am strictly a wheel-building neophyte, but it is something I enjoy doing. At some level it is repetitive and time-consuming, but it is also (to me) highly satisfying when you finish truing a wheel and give it a spin... and there is not the slightest wiggle or wobble.

The spoke lacing pattern is not "odd" per se, it is just that it has 32 spokes in a two-cross pattern, which is not as common.

My new bike has 32 spokes in a three-cross pattern, but I also own two other bikes, one with 24 spokes in a two-cross pattern, and one with 28 spokes in a two-cross pattern. @mtnbikej knows more about it than I do, and helped me by checking my math when it came to calculating the needed spoke lengths. How shall I put it - it is work that requires a high degree of detail orientation. But it is also work that can be performed standing in one spot in front of a truing stand, with a beer close at hand, just spinning and tweaking a wheel... until you get it perfect. For some people it would be a nightmare. You have to have the right personality :)

I can only say that he doesn’t change bikes often, knows a good bit about the technical side, and can haul ass when he decides to. :sneaky::speechless::thumbsup:
Ooooh Oooh I know I know! - at least I think I do, based on your description. I think I've ridden with him on several occasions and he and I both had a nasty injury on the same relatively easy trail. If that's the guy, then yes, I concur - good technical knowledge and can haul ass down the hill.
