In other news... Trying to beat the draw bridge on a road bike is not a smart move.

This is tragic. 20,000 miles and 1,187 hours in the saddle in 2020. I bet his endorphins were pumping full bore and he charged the gap with confidence. Then he died and caused a 3 hour delay for other cyclists and motorists and made cycling look bad to the public. More bicycling safety infrastructure is needed, say City officials...in this case the fault is on the cyclist, so the incident makes it harder for motorists to appreciate the need for bicycle safety infrastructure to separate bicycles from motor vehicles.

BTW, to hell with the catalytic converter thief(s).

Curiosity got the best of me so I checked this bridge out on Google maps. So what do they need to make this safer for cyclists at that bridge? Maybe a huge fence with razor wire that comes down? In the article they mention they are looking “to install gates that would block people from going under the arms.” He already disobeyed the sign AND the gates that come down. Wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a lawsuit claiming the city should have done more.

I totally agree with making roads safer for cyclists but this is a horrible example to push that agenda with.

When I lived in Florida, there was a reason my bike hung on the wall unridden. Bike lanes? I lived in a city of 75,000 that didn’t have a single sidewalk.

In the 15 years I worked in the schools, I knew at least 12 kids who were struck by cars walking to the bus stop- several fatally, and several who ended up with life altering disabilities. Zero changes…. Zero talk of changes.

The needs of pedestrians and cyclists are not high on the list of Florida’s priorities.

Horrible (and dumb) way to go. Hope he wasn't chasing a Strava time.
I know this was a huge issue with a lawsuit against Strava back in the day with Roadies chasing records and taking risks, running stop signs and lights, etc. One guy died trying to take back his KOM on a downhill and another blew threw a stoplight and killed a pedestrian.
RIP

These lasted a long time. Zoic makes good stuff.

Thanks for the reminder. I got some Showers Point waterproof gloves and socks for less than $60 with the discount and member dividend. That's almost $40 less than the Showers Point website.

Got my first vaccination on Tues. Other than some soreness at the injection site yesterday, no side noticeable effects. And that 3rd eye I am developing will come in real handy on crowded trails. :alien:
Got my first dose (Pfizer) last Friday. No side effects at all. OK, slightly sore arm Saturday until about noon. I actually didn't want to get a vaccination as I never get flu shots because I don't get the flu. I don't want to mess with my seemingly effective immune system. However, my wife and her autoimmune disease asked me to do the vaccine. I've been married for 32 years. I know what to do.

Fingers crossed for a similar experience for dose #2 - Friday April 9.

Moderna shot #1 left me with just a twinge in the arm for a day, and I felt maybe 97% for the rest of the day—but that might have been psychosomatic.... My wife complained about her arm for 48 hours.

It drizzled this morning! Get your Strava cups today!

If I am that worried about it, I will just sit at home, drink my coffee, and manually edit my Strava file before posting a ground-shattering time. Not only will I beat my personal best, but I will cause unknown grief to all of the people who live their lives in the pursuit of the approval of strangers.
