I Rode My Bike Today...

About to descend the goods on Animal at Prosser this AM. Good conditions, a few riders and hikers out.

A shakedown for the rebuilt Smash. No issues. The 140 fork rails but 150 is the naz for here, if only for BB height. The extra wattage needed to pedal it compared to the Ranger is not trivial, but the dh performance with the Avalanche’d coil is bliss on another level.

Just another local ride in the trees and rolling slabs at Spence Basin but as we headed out, I saw something I've never seen in 33 years of riding....an Asian mother out riding with her two, sub 10 year old daughters. The girls were on Trek Roscoe 20 bikes and the nine year old was zipping right along. The 7 year old stayed close with Mom and was a ways back. Nice to see a whole new demographic getting out there.

I rode my bike today in Lake Norman State Park! 30 miles, 3619 feet. Here's some of the trail work I was referring to. They took a "boring" section of trail and added 7 berms, 5 rollers, and 2 small tables to it. Good 'ole packed NC red clay. Loads of fun!

No snakes or tortoises, but tons of deer. And hot - in the high 80's low 90's. And humid. But riding in the shade makes it pretty bearable. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

You got my vote for pic of the year

I owed the weez a nice day on the trail without undue suffering. We drove the bikes up a peak, near the start of our most favorite romp.

Romp we did! A blast of bliss followed by a casual spin through the forest.

Back at the truck she was satisfied to call it a day. Being high as I was up there, I figured I had to take a run on something and pedal home while she drove the truck.

Following was my first run of the year on my second-favorite area trail. You say jump, it says yes. It's a long one, damn near back to town. Yep, it was...

What’s the red coil on the Trail Pistol?

Marshall Canyon afternoon. 14.3/2,115’. Got a pinch flat on an almost new Minion DHR2 2.4 EXO at 24-ish psi (29mm ID rim).

It shortened my ride, as I needed to be home for dinner. This gnarly rock garden showed the Maxxis who’s boss. Makes sense since this tire was a freebie with the new wheel.

Luckily I fixed the flat in the field.

Would you continue to run this tire if it holds air as is?

I'd be glad the rim shrugged it off and chuck the tire.

I've ran a similar repair on the rear. Worst case you could always tube it.

So... it was my neighbors first ride in dirt. I took him to Chino Hills. His bike weighs around 50 lbs. Not kidding! He rode it like a rock star! I was surprised for sure. We went up Telegraph to four corners and he only hopped off twice where it was just to steep for the weight of his bike and his tall gearing. He has another similar bike with 2.5 wide tires but the tires are worn out and he's not ready to replace them.:gotnothing: My goal is to show him around and let him decide if he wants to upgrade his equipment and ride more. His bike has mechanical brakes that squeal so loud it makes my teeth water. I was thinking of showing him the most famous loop in all of Orange County but I'm not sure he's worthy yet. :D He was even game to add in a couple more extra credit miles so I showed him the Red Woods nearby. 14.85 mi/ 933 elevation

I bet those tires are kinda fun going downhill, but I'd die getting them to the top. :gag: Good for you getting him out there...

Two rides this weekend...

Yesterday I headed up Lower Sam Merrill planning to take the Mount Lowe Road to Eaton Saddle and then down the Gabrielino. Shortly after passing Inspiration Point, I got the bright idea to head up the Mount Lowe West trail to the peak. I knew it would be steep, but I had never been to the actual peak. So... I pushed the bike up a little over a mile and a little over 1000 feet to the top of Mount Lowe. It's definitely a hiker trail... There were very few rideable sections. Coming down would require more skill than I have- especially the top half. After hitting the top, I descended the Mount Lowe East trail to the junction with Upper Merrill- where we usually take a break before the downhill. Pushing the bike uphill for 1000 feet depleted my water supply fast... I descended Upper Merrill, but skipped Middle to avoid the connector trail climb. Sunset finish... Following another rider on a nice YT Capra.

19 miles and 4400 feet.

Today...

A very mellow slow climb to the Ken Burton saddle. I used the big cogs and spun all the way up... Unknowingly, I passed @Derkderkall as I was approaching the saddle, and he was starting his descent.

I hung out for a few minutes, and then headed down. El Prieto is usually a little too crazy on the weekends, so I kept going to Millard. A short climb up Lower Sunset, and then down the Horse Trail...

Good for him riding that BSO up Telegraph.

Did you tell him fat bikes aren't a thing anymore?

Show him some steeper climbs, then he'll get the other bike up and running quicker. :sneaky:

Surprisingly, El P had very little traffic. I only encountered 1 lone hiker the whole way through.

Standard Sunday ride with the local 'Thumb Butte MTB' group. Basically the guy that started the group sends out a text every tuesday, thursday and saturday on where the next days ride will be. Anybody who wants to ride shows up and off we go. Today we rode the Thunb Butte area and even though it rained over an inch in less that 25 minutes yesterday afternoon and rained overnight at some point (my driveway was wet at 0630), the dirt was essentially perfect....as usual I've found. Back to Sedona tomorrow for some Chuckwagon fun!!

Rode a nearly-empty Cuyamaca SP today. From the peak to Green Valley to La Cima to the CHRT, saw maybe 10 hikers and zero bikers. A little heat never (rarely) hurt anybody, & the building thunderclouds threw some nice breezes my way!

I just had a DRCV shock rebuilt by fox (still in rotation). I have another one on a frame that retired, so I may never use it again and would love to transplant more Roscoe to bikes that ride. Measure the Eye-to-eye on your rear shock and let me know the stroke length (measure only the stanchion). If you plan to keep your bike and blow a shock…I may have a spare.

A 250-lb steel spring that Avy Craig sourced (sourced=probably had it in the shop?). I see people looking at it all the time.:thumbsup:
Do you guys use the lockout switch on your bikes? I used to leave it open for everything with a lot of LSC damping. The last 2 rides on the Bug I reduced LSC and started flipping the switch for climbs. I still can’t decide which way is more efficient for uphill.
