I Rode My Bike Today...

I've always wondered why there are two Sugarloaf Peaks so close (the one @Andy pic is referred to as "Sugarloaf" and is just above cocktail rock). From what I've read and heard, to get to that actual peak high point (above where the sign is on top of the rocks) takes some climbing gear or willingness to jump the gaps between bolders (?)

I thought I’d bookmarked the hiking blog where the guy details his “trek to the summit”. Unfortunately I can’t find it, but yes, it does involve effort, and either jumping, or rope to get across the gap. Probably why the sign is lower down than at the top.

I’ve never seen one on Bedford. I don’t think Horsethief has had one - but - I’ve going by hiking sites (specifically peakbagger.com and also peakery.com) so although I’ve been meaning to check horsethief, I haven’t got round to it yet. Apparently it’s a bit of a bushwhack to get to the peak...

Quick edit, also found this one off San Juan -

How can that be the summit (the sign) when there are clearly much higher points with the rocks right next to it.....????? o_O:rolleyes:

Got off work with plenty of sunlight left, was able to get out to Oaks. Trails were in nice shape, felt good to be able to spin on dirt again after work with the added daylight we have now. Ran in to some IMTBTRAILS royalty- met mtnbikeJ up on the ridge! Cool seeing you out there, great night to ride.

Yesterday was a mixed day. My usual Blackstar Thursday group wasn't riding Blackstar. So I headed out to the Oaks. It was clear right away I had no energy. My grand plans shot down. Rolled over to the barn where Suz was gonna do a easy social spin around Irvine Park. I joined in hoping my legs would wake up. Once we got to the bottom of Chutes, they were heading back to the barn, I decided to climb Chutes. I found a little bit of energy....chased a rabbit for a little bit.

Got to the top of Chutes and ran into an old friend. Turned into social hour til dark.

Now what I wanted to do, but I was able to salvage it.

Rode Black Star this morning for the first time since Counting Coup last year, also the first ride there on the current Huffy. I got to Beek’s and had a headache and just didn’t feel like going on any further. Legs felt fine, just didn’t feel like spinning anymore. Work has been hell lately and the kids keep coughing themselves awake at night so our sleep is all screwed up. Still got a gate to gate time of just over 1:20 which is good for my fat ass. :p

Temps were a little warm but there was a nice breeze so it was actually really nice out there. Only saw one rider, who passed me, on the way up but then on the way down it seemed like there was a friggin CX bike event because there must’ve been over a dozen of them along the way but they were all spread out. I assume that’s a super popular route for that current trend.

Earned myself a meatball sub and a beer at Wise Guys which is where I’m posting this from. :Barefoot:

First ride in close to 3 weeks. Arrgh that was rough. 10miles of stiff legged pedaling.

I know the feeling! The longer you are off the bike the harder it is to motivate to get back on since you know it’s gonna hurt. Good job shaking the cobwebs off before it got to be too long. After the fire in October it was tough for me to ride because my daughter was born and Oaks was closed so I went beyond 3 weeks and it sucked!

Second ride after being off for a bit... went to Hulda Crooks for an hour run. Started near noon, so temps were low 80s. Sweating that much was weird after having such nice weather! I made a wrong turn and went half way up Return of the Jedi. Then had to walk up the last 1/5 of the way to top of Jedi, was so tired. My head wasn't in it today either, and I was really cautious/mellow on the route down. But that doesn't mean it was a bad ride, far from it! Really enjoyed my time and the solitude out there today.

Beautiful!

12.5 miles with my wife in LCWP / El Moro. Fenceline/Moro Canyon, then peddling up to the entrance of Old Emerald Falls which was a blast. Think i like this one more than Old Emerald, despite the ruts....or actually because of the ruts. Then to the bottom of the Canyon to that gate (i wish i had a key), then back up again to Ridge Park. Trails are nice right now

Frontside San Gabes today. Up lower Fern, up Upper Fern to KB trailhead. Turned around and dropped back down Fern, turned toward El P at the lower saddle. Passed by El P and headed for Mallard Campground. Climbed Lower Sunset to Mt. Lowe Road. Climbed that awful thing to Mt Lowe railway trail. Took that to the ruins. Admired the hotties, oops, I meant the ruins. Pedaled back up the trail to Sunset trailhead and dropped in. Took that scary/rough thing back to the pavement and then took roads back to my truck which was parked near JPL.

2800' of climbing and an identical amount of descending with @Bill in LCWP. We kept an eye out for @Runs with Scissors, but didn't see him.

I really wanted to like the new trailwork on Camarillo, but I didn't. :( It's better than the fire-road that was there, but the turns are really strange - I lost the front wheel a couple of times due to outsloping, so I slowed down and tiptoed. Perhaps that's what LCF wanted to accomplish. I could see where several riders had skidded off the side of the trail, or perhaps fallen. Disappointing. Nothing that a few berms couldn't cure. Problem is, who is going to build them?

Bill sold himself short on Rattlesnake. He remembered the trail as having some substantial drops and ledges, and said he was likely to walk a good portion of it. Nope. He rode it without walking, or even dabbing any of it. He credits his new-to-him 29er and wider bars. But I'll let him elaborate.

Fun morning. Thanks for the company, Bill. Sorry to slow you down.

Bikes are fun!

OMG! Hate to be a little bitch but late start, mechanical and WTF? Whodathunk a 25 mile 3.7k+ ride would be ho hum. We got a late start which was no problem but early into the ride the clutch on my derailleur was acting up. I stopped at the top of one of the climbs and did a little diagnosis. I pulled the little cover and it appeared that the little gasket had been torn. Don't know how but the clutch mechanism was dry and rusted because of it. I ended up disabling it but I did drop my chain a couple of times on some chunky descents. At least I know now that the clutch works. Jennifer is on some new asthma meds so she's trying to get those dialed in. Anyways she did phenomenal as always but we were on a little bit of a time frame so I guess I was just getting frustrated. Turned out to be a wonderful day with a wonderful woman.

I rode it...
Did McGill Trail.
Brilliant me forgot I rode on Wednesday (got a flat)... and when I got back to the car I forgot I drank all but two swigs of my water in my water bottle. So today... I had two swigs of water on my ride. I wrote up McGill Trail conditions over on the Trail Condition Forum. It was wet and sluggish, but I was on a cruise mission anyway. Not fast up, not fast down either. Saw a total of 5 riders. Traffic is getting heavy up my way! :whistling::p

Roadie ride with @riiz today.

We found some dirt:

Perfect temps, sandy spots are all tamped down. Tons of hikers, no bikes other than roadies.

Three hours o' fun! Took plenty of breaks, and the knee feels good, while sore/stiff before the ride, nothing while riding. Fitness on the other hand has taken a hit for sure.

I see Heart Attack Hill in the distance!

Got out and rode my bike(s) today.....

This morning was ladies choice and @horsebikerider chose Chino Hills. We headed in from the RR tracks and just cruised up Lower Aliso. The plan was to stay in the back of the park. Suz was happy we were not going up Southridge. Passed the Rolling M Ranch and continued on up Upper Aliso to Sidewinder. Upper Aliso has turned into a singletrack about 12" wide with the brush growing in. Lots of hikers out there today. Up Sidewinder, we both made it around Kay's Corner. The steep sections of Sidewinder are much more doable at mile 10 then they are at mile 40. Fun run down Bane Ridge. Back down Lower Aliso and out. Of course we had a horrendous headwind back on the RR tracks.

Then this afternoon, I decided to head out for an afternoon bonus ride. Headed over to the Oaks. Temps were much warmer than this morning at Chino Hills. However the wind was still blowing. Up Oak, down Yucca, up BumbleGoat, up Goat, down Cactus, up Coachwhip, down/up Anaheim Hill Rd, over Robbers Roost, down Barham Ridge, down Chutes Ridgeline, up Chutes Trail, down Cactus, up BumbleBee, down Peralta Hills and out.

Fun day out there. Considering how I felt on Thursday, today was the complete opposite.

BumbleGoat lol. That's a good name for that section.

Nice ride(s).

I had planned on doing a big ride today but after having five too many margaritas at the Simi Valley Taco Margarita Festival yesterday I was lucky to be able to ride at all. We got home yesterday around 5 and all I remember is ordering sushi then passing out. That'll teach me to drink on an empty stomach. I woke up around 9pm and my buddy Chris had texted me about riding Space Mountain Sunday morning. I was somewhat sober by that time so figured I'd be okay in the morning. We started with some new to me trails in the Los Robles Open Space. Lots of sun singletrack. I need to explore over there more. After that we headed up Space Mountain to the bench and back. Not too many people out but enough to ride with caution. When I woke up this morning I actually thought of canceling but I'm glad I didn't. I ended up feeling okay and having a great ride.

A fun Easter sunday rip with my buddy Mike. Started at TOW, hit Mentally Sensitive for my first time I believe and cleaned most of it except for the semi chuck line towards the bottom. Then we hit 5 oaks which I hadn't done in a long time. Got most of that too and have video of it as well. Then up Cholla and down Stairs and out. That dang waterfall still gets in my head :bang: but had a pretty good run down it otherwise. If you can believe it, there was No TnA run on this ride... 12.64mi, 1,500 of climbing and good times!
Here's the vid of the Stair Steps run. Happy Easter party people!

Nice job. The far left on the waterfall (1:07) has a very easy little wall on it that is almost a cheater line. Even easier than the far right. The middle is still a commitment.

I just love that you are mixing it up and getting more and more comfortable with reasonable speed in chunky conditions. Love the subtitles too!
:thumbsup::thumbsup::cool::cool:

Baby steps but I'm definitely on a good path to getting back to where I once was...:D Working on the 5 oaks vid as we speak. :whistling:
I honestly think you are carrying more pace than when we first started riding together. You may have done more trails then, or been a little braver, but you are quickly establishing a new level of comfort that is higher than your 2010 self.

IMHO, of course.
