I Rode My Bike Today...

I rode Oaks again today. I was aware in advance that some of the local, massive group rides were going to be there, and they were ... it was as crowded as I have seen it in a long time. I did my best to avoid them, and I changed my planned course numerous times. As much as I disagree with the large group rides, that feeling would be somewhat mitigated if they actually rode instead of stopping every 10 minutes to chat, take pics, etc. F'ing just go already.

I ended up doing four runs down Yucca (no complaints, that trail is a high speed blast), and one each down Peralta, Barham, and Grasshopper. The queue at the top of Ridgeline was stupid, so I think today was the first time I have ever ridden Oaks and not gone down Ridgeline ... but it is what it is. Not a single downhill run without encountering hikers or bikers (or trail maintenance guy, LOL), but it is what it is. I may have to sneak out of work Tues or Wed to do it again and to get some alone time. At the end of the day, I had a blast, so that's all that really matters.
Oaks on mondays..solo...

I rode a hardtail up skyline today. I crushed my PR by 13 minutes from the gate to echo. I decided to take the Troy Lee and Block trails back to the bottom. I think I am in the market for a FS XC bike.

The hardtail was beating me up on the descents, but that might just be that I was on an unfamiliar bike.

Hardtails take a little getting used to if you are used to FS.

Nice job on the PR.

I climbed Verdugo Mountain this afternoon via La Tuna Canyon. The green is spreading rapidly. Butterflies everywhere now. I watched a male bobcat meander casually down a fire break. He knew I was watching but it didn't seem to bother him. Just a few other cyclists and a few hikers/runners. 11+ miles

It was very clear out today. I could see Santa Barbara Island out at sea and Dana Point below, both of which are at least 50 miles away as the crow flies.

I rode this afternoon at the Oaks w/ @horsebikerider .

Her choice....we rode the divorce horse.....er, tandem. Been a while since we rode it. What better way to beat the wind than with an oversized heavy bike.

There are certain trails at the Oaks we had not ridden yet. Down Yucca, up Coachwhip....yes, we passed a few riders....down Deer(1st time). Cleaned all the switchbacks and the climb back out of Anaheim Hills Rd. Down Barham Ridge....down Chutes Ridgeline(1st time) including the top rock section....we also hit the big G-out at the wash at the bottom....cleaned the climb out. Figured we had pushed out luck enough, we took it easy the rest of the ride.

Had no idea there was a summit sign up there. Where is it relative to the actual summit where the USGS markers are?

It's kind of hard to describe with the maze of buildings up there, so hopefully this helps:) (Ignore Google's Building 14 label, Santa Ana Mountains label, and Santiago Peak label - just pay attention to my homemade red label and arrow)
Santiago Peak Sign.jpg

It's on top of a little rocky hill that you have to kind of scramble up next to what I think of as the main building up there. Although I probably only think it's the main building because it's right next to the sign.o_O
There's also a USGS marker a few feet away from it on the same rocky hill, but I didn't realize there's more than one marker up there.

Ah, got ya! Right where the actual summit it, doh  I should get up there more... I reckon they placed it in the same effort that they signed Los P Peak – same sign style.

Thx, Matt. Summit or plummet :geek:

Ok... I rode yesterday. Just a quickie around O'Neill in the howling winds. It was difficult to stand at the top of the Vista DH, but it was still fun. Trying to steer the bike to the entrance of the single track was pretty interesting. :eek:o_O:confused: I ended up doing a couple extra credit sections and finished with 10 miles and 1700 feet.

Today... I did the West Horsethief to Trabuco loop with a friend- as a little VQ scouting mission. It was going great... Until my rear tire threw itself on a sharp rock on Lower Trabuco, and put a 1 inch gash in the sidewall. Sealant sprayed everywhere, and the ride was over. Thankfully we were close to the end, and I walked/rode it out. I could have fixed it, but we were close anyway... 12 miles and 2800 feet. Most of the climbing on this route is on foot, pushing the bike up WHT. :gag:  Trabuco was awesome as always. Back country feel only a few miles from the house. Not a soul on the entire route.

Crossing over to lower Trabuco...

One of the faves today with @sir crashalot ... San Juan trail starting at Blue Jay, Old San Juan to Cocktail Rock, New San Juan to Viejo Tie, finish with the remaining length of Chiquito to the Candy Store. The trail thoroughly kicked my butt today, the last downhill after the Chiquito waterfall just non stop tech for a few miles... arms, hands, neck got scary fatigued on that last one third. I walked more than I normally do, have to live for another day and get in better shape since my hiatus. Didn't help the bike hiking that I crushed my toe between pedal and a rock earlier. I don't think they'll need to amputate... but I said some bad words when it happened...

Meanwhile, Gary kicked butt, riding maybe the best I've ever seen him. He cleared some tech stuff with ease that I've never tried. Good stuff, thanks for waiting and cheering me on Gary!

No pics today, no water in the waterfall, Chiquito after the waterfall had no moisture in the soil/DG. Towards end of SJ loop ran into a Red diamondback rattlesnake. Huge snake, I had some energy left in the legs after all. And removed a tick picked up during the ride somewhere. That time of year. Great ride!

Hey! I rode a bike today! And it was fun!

It's been almost three weeks, due to a knee injury from having the wrong saddle height. I've done real good staying off it, but today was the day! My son fractured three ribs in a crash about four weeks ago, and finally decided today was the day for him as well! Even dragged my youngest out as well, so it was the day for her as well!
We rode slowly, and had a good ride. Just about an hour out at Oakmont, uneventful spinning. And what was amazing is my knee feels PERFECT now! Going in it was still sort of achy if I held it at the wrong angle or walked too much, so I was a little bit worried. But post ride... nada, nothing, no pain/stiffness at all! And dropping in the first trail, I just had a big huge stupid smile on my face, stoked to be out there. Wow, I've missed riding through the last few weeks!

True story: Riding bikes fixes your Sh!t, mentally and physically!

Great ride dave, glad we did that! You rode fantastic! Thanks for the kind words...I felt great on the bike today. Lack of moisture in the soil and waterfall was a bit of a bummer though. The oak forest in Lion Canyon looks like it may be dying from the drought.

Great job, Dave and Gary! No easy way to slice a ride like that...healthy respect for Chiq is a good thing  Crashnot's on a roll both uphill and down it sounds like...right on!!!!! TFPU, lads.

Building a DH trail using the local inhabitants hwys. Donkey! So I rode it for the 2nd time yesterday. All I had time for. 5 mile loop out of the house. 1250' most of that in the 1st 2 miles. Added some rock rollers after the 1st run down they were fun. Need to work in some traverse sections to act as a brake assistent. Trail looses to much elev to quickly. Going to be a fun trail system for the DH junky crowd.

removed a tick picked up during the ride somewhere.
At one of my routine med appointments this morning, the nurse took one look at the tick bite on my side and said "go to the ER". She was convinced it was a Lyme disease bullseye rash. My primary doc got me in quick. After exam, he doubted it was Lyme. The tick had only burrowed in for just a couple hours yesterday (usually takes a couple days for the Lyme bullseye to appear), but he gave me 14 days of antibiotics in case. Never had a tick bite that got such a welt (a couple inches in diameter, pink and sore to the touch, but not really a "bullseye").
Anyways, be careful out there these days and check thoroughly afterwards.

Went to Lower Monroe Truck Trail for the first time this afternoon. It was either Marshall to top of Potato, Blackstar (never been) or Chino Hill State Park (never been either) since I wanted to go for a longer ride today. It was a really nice ride aside from all the rocks everywhere and the ruts from recent rain . Only saw 5 hikers and one person on a bike. I really wish I could have gone faster up and down, but I was cautious since it was my first time. Doubt I'll return since I like Marshall and Hulda Crooks a lot better. Going to Blackstar after I fix a spoke and get a new bb .

It was easier than I thought it was going to be.. 16/2360'

Any idea if some of the smaller peaks have signs? Bedford, Horsethief, etc...

I’ve never seen one on Bedford. I don’t think Horsethief has had one - but - I’ve going by hiking sites (specifically peakbagger.com and also peakery.com) so although I’ve been meaning to check horsethief, I haven’t got round to it yet. Apparently it’s a bit of a bushwhack to get to the peak...

Quick edit, also found this one off San Juan -

I've always wondered why there are two Sugarloaf Peaks so close to each other (the one @Andy pic is referred to on maps as "Sugarloaf" and is just above cocktail rock on San Juan Trail). From what I've read and heard, to get to that actual peak high point (above where the sign is on top of the rocks) takes some climbing gear or willingness to jump the gaps between boulders (?) Maybe Hans Rey has done already :)

The other Sugarloaf (referred to as "Old Sugarloaf" on maps) is a little west, reached from the open/flatish area after the initial decent on San Juan Trail from cocktail rock. It is a little higher than the 'new sugarloaf'. It is much more prominent from Orange County (looks like a mound of sugar, rounded off top). Just an observation fwiw.
