Headed out to Peltzer Pines this morning with the Sutra on the bike rack. Unloaded, geared up, and pedaled up Silverado, then Maple Springs, past 4 Corners and on up to the turnoff for Modjeska Peak. My plan was to get to Santiago Peak, but I had walked about a mile through the rock garden called Main Divide between 4C and Modjeska. When I hit the slight downhill into the saddle between Modjeska and Santiago, I realized what a bad idea 1.8" tires on a rigid steel bike was for this particular return route.
I had noticed on the climb that the tires didn't like golf ball sized rocks that move, but it didn't really register until the downhill.
I proceeded to turn around and beat myself up all the way back to the pavement.
But then it was a sit back and relax 8 miles back to the car.
MS is really beat up, and the rock-strewn stretch up to Modjeska isn't exactly packed down. Several jeeps/trucks/motos while I was up there. And two old guys, Forest Service volunteers, painting over the grafitti on the railings at 4C. Still a fun ride, but I think the downhill was just as much work, or more, than climbing it. My legs felt fine, though a 36t chainring lets you know it's there. The rest of me is feeling it. 25 miles and 4,100 feet on the dirt-drop fun machine.
I found @Faust29 's car...

Ever notice that it's kinda steep on MS pavement and first part of the dirt?

I don't remember seeing the grafitti last time I was up here.
