I Rode My Bike Today...

It's definitely called Mustard. But oddly, even the OC Parks Map leaves it nameless. Find Borrego and just follow it to Four Corners. That's Mustard. It's just a fire-road, and it's not ridiculously challenging. It gets a little steep for the final 20 pedal strokes, but not crazy. Consider that my comments are coming from - me. You know I love climbing.

That’s right, it’s not much of a hill. Just a small part of the ride.
.7mi 347’ 9% grade.
Compared to Mathis in Aliso for ref.
1mi 554’. 10.1% grade.

I just keep referencing it as a fitness gauge for me because it’s my local. And just 1.5 years ago on an intense 6.6 i still had to walk 1/2 of it at 24min.

Expected high winds out on Main Divide meant an alternative ride today. Figured Whiting/Old Camp would getbus the miles/elevation we were aiming for.

First run down Cactus hurt my head.....eyes were bouncing around in their sockets.

Some trail work has been done on the entrance to Borrego....fortunately it’s only about the first 1/8 mile.

Mustard wasn’t fast....at least it didn’t feel fast.

Second run down Cactus was just as bad as the first. Up Saddleback Ranch and out to the Grade....was still waiting for my legs to join the party.

Climb up STT wasn’t fast. Made it about 1/2 way to Luge before having to turn lights on.

Climbed past the Luge to The Point of No Return....or the DH before Cadillac.

Back down to the Luge....wind picked up. Luge wasn’t fast....again my eye were bouncing in the sockets.

Still a fun ride.

@herzalot ... that was likely me. I love that drag race down the canyon after a long ride! Like @Faust29 (I think) said, insanely busy. A trial every month for the last three (and next six) months, while managing the other attorneys in the firm, trying to get my clients to pay their bills, and I am supervising remodeling of a house I bought on Coronado ... and life. BUT - I am indeed hitting the trails most Sunday mornings and hitting the trainer at least twice a week. I miss coming on here and posting... but that is a luxury that I cannot often afford these days. Back to drafting my trial brief... i have been lurking a bit and jealously reading ride reports - especially the recent PCE bomb squad report. Be well amigos - rubber side down.

Headed out to Peltzer Pines this morning with the Sutra on the bike rack. Unloaded, geared up, and pedaled up Silverado, then Maple Springs, past 4 Corners and on up to the turnoff for Modjeska Peak. My plan was to get to Santiago Peak, but I had walked about a mile through the rock garden called Main Divide between 4C and Modjeska. When I hit the slight downhill into the saddle between Modjeska and Santiago, I realized what a bad idea 1.8" tires on a rigid steel bike was for this particular return route. I had noticed on the climb that the tires didn't like golf ball sized rocks that move, but it didn't really register until the downhill.

I proceeded to turn around and beat myself up all the way back to the pavement. But then it was a sit back and relax 8 miles back to the car.

MS is really beat up, and the rock-strewn stretch up to Modjeska isn't exactly packed down. Several jeeps/trucks/motos while I was up there. And two old guys, Forest Service volunteers, painting over the grafitti on the railings at 4C. Still a fun ride, but I think the downhill was just as much work, or more, as climbing it. My legs felt fine, though a 36t chainring lets you know it's there. The rest of me is feeling it. 29 miles and 4,100 feet on the dirt-drop fun machine.

I found @Faust29's car...

Ever notice that it's kinda steep on MS pavement and first part of the dirt?

I don't remember seeing the grafitti last time I was up here.

You could have headed down Harding and roadied it back to the Tree Farm. Harding is in really nice shape.

I did it again today. But this AM i did not have any sugars. So i entered WR feeling lack luster and slow.

I cruised up borrego. Very enjoyable. I hit Mustard and decide to crank. I did 10:07! My 2018 goal is only 7 seconds away. PR PR Pr city!!!!!!

Followed my bro down cactus at a wild bumpy pace. Over to vulture view and drifted a couple corners on the way out.

Celebrated with a Tommy’s chillier cheese burger for recovery, which is working wonders. No BS.

That is 39miles this week so far and probably won’t ride this weekend.

First real ride on the 29'ameleon. I pushed it a little bit to see what it had, and got some PRs on the road segments where it is definitely faster. I don't have as much confidence on the dirt compared to the fatties though. Having the back end whip around like it hasn't over the last four months was pretty weird! I remember getting used to how planted it was, and now I have to go back to it being loose!!! I did my normal hour loop, and somehow managed to have a good time!

I cleared the rocks under Modjeska the other day, but it was close a few times! Good job getting down through it on the skinny tires.

You guys are going to convince me to get one of those things. I can picture some incredibly big loops!

I hope you wore a jock, those eye balls were not the only things bouncing on that hard tail.
