I Rode My Bike Today...

The little woman and I.
Perfect temps start to finish. Not much water at the falls.

Recovering from a day at LEGOLAND on Monday, but still got out this morning. Climb felt decent, but the rutted steep drop in from the bench had me bouncing and feeling like I was going to otb. Almost ate it in front of a dozen members of the trail running club. I thought I was just having an off day, since the rest of the descent didn’t feel so great. At the gate at the bottom I realized that I hadn’t opened my fork compression after my ride through the neighborhood on the weekend.

Two fer report. Rode the E-bike last night in the Newhall and Gates Open Space in SCV yesterday at 6:00PM starting at 101º and ending at 94º for 14 miles and 2500ft. If you haven't ridden in the area, do it. South SCV has some fantastic trails. Thank goodness for the Pivot e-bike last night.

I've been itching to ride my Yeti SB140 and itching to do a full Mt. Pinos classic loop including the Pinecones trail, but nobody likes me enough to join me so I left by myself this morning at 6:30 and did the loop before work. I haven't been riding too much recently and have had too much time on the e-bike, so Pinos was not easy - particularly after riding the night before in the heat.

I strategically rode up the pavement to the top of Pinos such that I was somewhat in the road thinking that if I had a heart attack and fell over in the middle of the road, someone would have to either help me or run over me. Either way, the problem would be solved ;). Pinos and Pine Mountain Club never disappoint and it was about 70º when I started and less than 90º when I finished, so there's that. I like that SB140 and as much as I enjoy the e-bike, it does not replace the desire to ride a classic mountain bike! Interestingly, I can go faster now and with more confidence on the e-bike due to the fantastic stability, but I still prefer the mtb. Here are a few images.

Rode out at Phil’s World today in Cortez. Had to get there by 0800 to get 70 degree temps. Minimal cars in the lot and I saw exactly zero other riders on my 18+ mile ride. It warmed up to 85 by the time I was done and I was definitely done!! Being out there solo, I probably shouldn’t have done the drop in sections on Poquito Burrito but I survived them in both directions to ride another day. The chute pictured below and drop/turn at the bottom of said chute has plenty of potential for a heli ride exit.

Laguna this morning. I got started about 1.5 hours later than planned as it rained a little overnight and I wanted to let things dry out. I got lucky with the weather ... nothing but cloud cover until I got home and then the sun suddenly emerged. It was ridiculously humid, so good thing I put two packs of LMNT in my hydration pack. I will probably drink three more today to make up for how much sweat I lost.

There were hardly any other bikes out, and the ones I did see were eBikes of course. Minimal hikers.

Ol' Emerald, Fenceline/Missing Link, Rattlesnake, Ticketron, Lizards and Camarillo for the interesting stuff. Rattlesnake was not very fun at all as it was super overgrown and pretty miserable actually. Original plan was to turn around at the end and go back up, but I had no interest in getting assaulted by weeds again, so suffered with the fire road climbs to get back over to Lizards.

Added 5 psi to my fork before I started and did not bottom it this time, so that problem is cured. Interesting how Rockshox seem much more accurate with their air pressure recommendations than Fox. I usually end up about 20 psi under what Fox recommends, but Rockshox are pretty much dead on for my riding weight.

Good fun, everyone should take weekdays off from work to ride ... so many less people. Hopefully I will get out again tomorrow or Sunday. Got to build up my riding fitness.

I'm likely out for 7/20 @ Irvine Ranch, but I'll let you know if anything changes.

Attack that wall like a SingleSpeed rider.
I do have weekdays off...lol

Didn’t feel like driving back into Durango and dealing with finding a parking spot at Horse Gulch so I just rode mostly FS roads and double-track trails (quads, RAZR’s and dirt bike legal stuff) out in the forest adjacent to my in-laws property in Saul’s Creek. Not the most exciting but it’s a beautiful area, saw nobody other than 3-4 dog walkers and the weather was perfect….low 70’s with a slight breeze when I finished. 15 miles and 1350’…

The view into the NF from the in-law's front porch. They own 41 acres here.
