I Rode My Bike Today...

Tahoe tails today. 35 miles and 3,200 feet. Felt like much more with all the rocks going up and down. Ended up in South Lake Tahoe. After all the Singletrack we climbed a fire rode and dropped the paved road back to my buddy’s house.

Probably relocated to a less populated are

Well, the euphemism used to be "...free ticket to Rae Lakes..." But those were Yose bears mostly. They stopped this practice when Rae became a mini war zone. Not sure where they go now, but Tehipite Valley would be my guess. There's a TR by the ubiquitous Bob Burd in which he recounts being kept awake all night by the same bear at Rae: 1) bear attacks metal food locker, 2) campers wake en masse and shine lights make noise, 3) bear stands perfectly still "can't see me!" style, then breaks for next campsite, 4) repeat repeat repeat.

Do you have a link to that specific TR?

I'll dig for it. It would be mid 2000s, Kearsarge area, maybe a Sierra Challenge trip? If I find it, I'll post here. I am likewise in awe of his curriculum vitae. Who else gonna day hike Devil's Crag #1?

Got a great old bear story, rated R for graphic violence and some bike content, maybe I'll post that later, too.

I put in some miles at Richfield, Utah. Kiln It, Faulty and Lower Faulty, Cairn-Age and back to our campground. I made it to the halfway point of the new elongated Spinal Tap trail. I had consumed 2/3 of my water supply and was OK with that. It was all downhill from my turn-around point. I deliberately brought my 27+ wheel set with the 2.8 wide tires just so I could rail the many bobsled style corners all the way down the mountain. My brakes were Ok not great- I only had to hard brake for on the spur moment decisions one makes at speed. I had ridden these trails in the past- actually more than once over the years. For a guy like me who can't turn left on my motorcycle or mountain bikes I did a pretty good job of going for it down this trail system. I was damn happy riding back to our campground today. 18 mi/ 1,692 Climbing. Elevation in the town of Richfield is around 5,000 feet. ( I would have to clarify that ) Pics to follow-

A little ride at Turkey Mountain this morning, with some locals. Only 14 miles and 1175’, gotta either be really strategic or pack on the miles to get any good elevation out here. I forgot to wash my shorts so I was stuck with my stank. It was all soaked with sweat by the end anyways. So humid out.
I am sooooo glad we can't smell the ride reports! Perhaps you need to link up with @DangerDirtyD for a pungent pedal party!

16.36/2,008’ at Marshall Cyn. Started out feeling strong but bonked pretty hard by the 10-mile mark and turned around to head back. Still beat the heat since I pedaled out after noon despite the sunshine. I just need to follow this up with another ride and another after that before August.

On page 1,207 of the “I Rode My Bike” thread…
… I rode my bike.

The Back 40 as it is called. It’s a 21 mile loop but we started on the Blowing Springs Loop and jumped on Low Ride over to The Back 40. Up near Missouri Jeff Wolfe and I jumped on a short-cut named SBAT. I have no idea what that acronym means. Over to Schoolhouse Summit which is a Black Diamond ONLY because it is a brutal climb, back onto The Back 40 that got us back to Blowing Springs the trailhead where I had two ice cold Pacifico’s waiting in my cooler.

Back 40 can be tough as each section ends with a steep climb to a road crossing. Stupid design in that regard. Felt good to stretch my legs on a bigger ride.

I ride today
But no dirt
Pedaled the usual route, but the gate was locked and closed until tomorrow. 3 Day closure over the holiday.
Sooo I backtracked then headed up Myrtle to pedal around the foothill mansions.
Still a good morning on the bike. A bit shorter than usual so came home and did 20 minutes of yoga . My hammies have been really sore lately, but it helped a whole lot

My better half and I rode B* @ 6:30 AM today, and it was very normal except that we were passed about 30 minutes in by three guys on ICE dirt bikes. Fortunately it was a Conservancy day so there were Rangers around and we reported the incident when we returned, but it looks like they got away with it. We didn't see them come back down so they must have gone around and exited at Silverado or??? Keep alert; it's not safe out there.

I rode my new (to me) bike today, a Nicolai Saturn 16. 160 front, 150 rear, 29er with some radical geo. It’s fun. I’ll be writing up a bike review after some more seat time. It does everything as good or better than my knolly. It’s not a rocket ship, but it’s better than my Knolly. I’ll be looking at another bike to fill the rocket ship hole I have ;)

But heartbreak when I got home. I didn’t check the shock bolts when I was putting the bike together. The suspension was assembled but apparently the upper shock eye nut was not there. I was probably riding the whole time with the bolt in there just from friction. I’m getting a new one from Germany ($$), but I’m traveling for work the next two weeks so I probably wouldn’t have much time to ride anyways. I may end up swapping out the suspension for a more conventional setup (probably rockshox.) The boutique Italian suspension is nice for the bling but I want to be able to service my suspension.

Nicolai Saturn

And I mean I really like, as in vote early vote often. Nicolai is my current 'I covet that' brand. Back in '90s, I was riding Kleins but coveted Ventana something fierce. When I finally acquired one, it managed to extrapolate on my own expectations and thus open many doors. And they, Nicolai, as a brand endeavor to keep gearbox visible.

Beautiful bike! Enjoy.
