Fashion Statement Thread

Okay...............
With imtbtrails as my therapist, I have to make an observation/confession...
Now two pairs in, I have to say that I think Baggies suck! :o
The Endura Humvees are nice, but HOT! And I'm not talking fashion (uhhh, like depicted above), but even in early spring cool weather, I'm burning up in them.

The Pearl Izumi P.R.O. Baggies are much cooler, but for the size prescribed on their sizing chart I feel like I'm in a dress. That could be a real bad combo with me shaving my legs and arms during Tick season!
AND,
during the grind climbs the P.R.O.'s outer shell slides down from the friction and forces of the saddle, and LACK of friction between the inner and outer parts of the baggies, so in essense, I'm getting my pants pulled down like some Hommie in dah ghetto!

All this for fashion and a couple of pockets!?!?
I'll choose function over fashion in mountain biking every time... 8-)

Well you tried. You also picked two of the worst pair of shorts ever intended for mountain biking. Those Pearls you were wearing were ridiculously oversized, and I agree that the Humvees are a poor design. On behalf of the MtB Fashion Consultancy, we appreciate your efforts. I realize we will never get you to try one of the many wonderful iterations that are comfortable, breathe well, provide a modicum of coverage and protection and do not create additional problems (Troy Lee, Fox, Jett, Yeti, Royal, Dakine, Race Face, Specialized, etc). Maybe I will buy you a pair for your birthday. Until then, I will prepare myself for the likelihood that you will be riding in your contour-hugging roadie leotard next time we ride together. :o

Herz!
You are so understanding
I WILL however try another pair. BUT, I think it should go to a vote as to which one the imtbtrails federation think they should be. It has to be unanimous (good luck with THAT!)
But I will try another pair.
Do we need to put together a poll?

This looks like a good mtb outfit.

^^^I hate you... ^^^
Unisex? . . . no junk...
(uhhh, not that I was looking, but hey! Look at the (guy/girl)!

I agree.....some baggy shorts are horrible.

The sizing on some are just asinine. For a long time I could not fit into Fox shorts....even when trying on 2 sizes bigger, they just felt like they were trying to cut off all circulation to my lower extremities. Sorry, if you wear a size 36/38 pair of shorts....chances are pretty good you do not have chicken legs...but that is how they fit. Seems like over the years they finally figured it out. I now fit into them without issue....also they are inconsistent within their own line. Some styles I am a 34, while I have to run 36 in others.

I have been very hesitant to try others...as usual, once you find something that works...why mess with it.

Try wearing board shorts/surf trunks. This is what I wear most of the time. Hurley & Volcom make some good shorts that are stretchy material and dry fast. The fit is slim too, not super baggie like most industry specific shorts. I wear bib shorts underneath them. The Hurley ones do tend to slide down from friction and saddle forces. So, I just safety pin the back of them to the bib. Problem solved. Way cooler (temperature wise) than most baggies and the fit is unmatched.

My wife bought me these at Performance... And they are my absolute favorite shorts- mountain bike or otherwise. They aren't as heavy (or protective) as what most wear, but they are the most comfortable shorts I own. I could easily wear them on the road bike.

My only problem was the "slip down" issue. I solved that with a hi tech add-on. I'm sure it's not Herz approved, but you can't see it under the jersey!

Those Fox Rangers I reported about on some other thread have turned out to be the bestest shorts I've owned. Light, Comfortable. Cool, Fit true to size (34), no hangup on saddle, good chamois liner (somehow not as stinky at the end of the ride) - what, TMI?.

I've got a couple pairs of Fox Ranger Cargo and they work for me. One of them the chamois broke (really, the foam cracked and gave me a pain in the azz). So I got the high end Fox chamois/liner which I like allot better for longer rides. One of the outers I have at least a year on and no wear issues. But I'm not a fox fanboi, I have other outers that fit fine too, I look for those sold by waist size (some are sold as small/med/large which never seem to fit), and an adjustable waist (I think rangers go in or out an inch or two).

And speaking of function over form, I really really need pockets, I couldn't do lycra only, just because they have no pockets. I just look for a good fit on the outer shorts, and mix and match the chamois/liners as needed (best ones for longest rides). I even have one pair of lycra with all kinds of advertising on them, and they have the best chamois, so I use them all the time under a pair of my Ranger outers, so I have a good shamois, and my pockets :)

I just bought this jersey and need to know what color shorts I should get to match it. Herzalot, I need your expertise!!

Man- I was hoping this thread died!

With that said, I hope anyone who comes along on Sunday up GMR is dressed fashionably. I'd hate to look out of place with all the roadies.

Is that a unicorn in your shorts or are you just happy to see me?

I think that baggies have generally taken a turn for the worse the past several years. I am not a fan of the type that have a separate 'liner/chamois' component. I long for the days when the chamois was sewn into the shorts and that was that. The older Nema Crown Jewels were awesome, as were some of the Oakley shorts that were made like the Nema's.

Before reading the following paragraph, you must agree to never mention this to anyone else. You must also agree to never ask me about this unless we are alone as I will disavow any knowledge of this alleged fact in the presence of others:

Since I am currently sporting the silhouette of a pear, my shorts have a tendency to roll down from the top, and/or not stay up as well as I would like them to. To combat this issue, I often wear suspenders and leave the shorts kind of loose around the waist if possible. That helps keep them up where I like them (so nobody thinks I might possibly be employed by Mike Diamond or Ready-Rooter). Since the suspenders clamp best to a thicker waist band, I look for baggies that have them. The older Nema Crown Jewels and some Oakley shorts were very good in this respect too. It's a little weird looking if I have to remove my shirt to adjust layers, but LBH here, it was gonna be weird anyway :wtf:

The Cone of Silence has been lifted.

Yikes - a bit of True Confessions coming through here...

It should make Mikie feel proud that people trust each other enough on this forum to go into the deepest, darkest recesses of our private moments to share our inner and outer struggles.

I had some Crown Jewels and I still have some Oakleys with the liner in them. The Oakleys are heavy, but they work well. The Crown Jewels were a little too short for my tastes. I actually liked the liners sewn in as well, since I wash the outer shell every time anyway. The current iteration of the Fox Rangers is still at the top of the list for me.

And thank you double D, for sharing your trials and tribulations with Mtb wardrobe function and fashion.

I agree with the the sewn in liners.....like the first couple generations of Oakleys.

I have now moved on to Fox, and I gotta say, the seperate liner is a pain in the ass. The attachment straps evenually break in the laundry, then make them useless.

It would be nice if they made them with a hook/button/clip....something so that you could disconnect them for the washing and reconnect them when it is time to wear them.

First thing I do on new shorts is cut the attachment straps so the liner and outer are separate entities. I don't have issue with them then, I just replace liners or outers as they wear.
I too have an old pair of Nemas with the built in liner. The outers are still in great shape but the chamois lost any padding ability long ago. Occasionally use them for short rides.

Pssst - over here....

A little secret. The removable liners do not need to be attached to the shorts - ever. Shhhhhhhh. Don't tell. It'll be our little secret. :o

They kinda help act like suspenders.....so, yeah.....they do. :P
