Crashed on first time jump

I scheduled an apptmt with my ortho doc. I hope it's sort of a waste of time. I've been seeing him a little too often recently. Not a good pattern.

In any event, I learned my lesson and I'll be wearing the Fox knee pads next time I ride. I made 2 stupid mistakes.

1) too advanced a jump for my skill level
2) should have worn knee/elbow pads (like I tell my son but not myself?)

If you broke something in your leg....you would not be walking on it

Yep, I'm pretty sure you're correct. But it's better safe than sorry. I've had a meniscectomy in that knee joint 3 years ago. So it's not perfect as it was. Which is how I ended up mtn biking, otherwise I'd for damn sure still be trail running.

Arbi

It's an Armenian name.

I met a white guy yesterday (random realtor at our front door), whose name was John and he legally changed it to "Cheyenne". Thought that was randomly cool b/c it sounds like a prostitute's or porn star's name. So party.

If you could change your name, what would you change it to?

You know what I miss Jack Tripper (RIP), so I'll use his pic now. thx.

Not a Mtn Biking Vid, but we all try and apply these principles at times. The more energy you retain, the longer/further/faster you can ride.

The last part of that vid... awesome.

F-35 pilots were saying the planes have crappy energy management and unable to dog fight vs less modern aircraft. (Military leaders say that they're not meant for dogfighting, and that they're supposed to eliminate the enemy before they even get close.)

I ride motocross. Learning how to jump should be done in a very controlled environment where you can progressively go faster and faster over the same jumps. Ideally the jumps are groomed to perfection so there are no kickers.

I'm not sure how this can be learned on a MTB, but on a motocross track we hit the same jumps over and over again.

Jumping is very dangerous and it should be taken very seriously.

Good point. Now I know what a kicker is. I don't know how you guys knew it was a kicker based on the pics I showed but it did have that pull back feel at the lip which surprised me.

This is how we can practice jumps on MTB:

Kryptonics Micro Pyramid Ramp

I'm not allowed to jump anymore according to my ortho doc, but it's tempting to buy that and use it in La Tuna where I train and hide it somehow after each use. Doesn't seem realistic.

Interesting take by the "military leaders," since the designation "F" in the F-35 means Fighter. I could understand not dogfighting an A-7. Even an A-10 (Warthog, tankbuster). But if it starts with F it's supposed to go for air superiority, which means missiles and dogfights; denying the other guy control of the airspace.

I can guaran-damn-tee you that the Russian MiG pilots and their MiGs will dogfight when and where necessary.

This is a subject I know a little about. Why dog fight if you don't have to? It is indeed all about air superiority. But if we get stuck "thinking" that owning the skies equals dog fight then we limit potential.

The technology behind the F35 is "Strike before detected". It's stealth and detects stealth. Before the enemy even knows of an F35 presence... They are already dead. Dog fights leave hope. Why bother?

The CTOL (Air Force) variant is the only one with a gun on it, because they had to have it. We said, "Why? You will never even need it. By the time you could use it, they would have already been obliterated...

Don't waste your money on that... it's far too small to be used with a mountain bike.

Forget jumping and learn to wheelie, ride up/down stairs and bunny/j hop. This skills will be far more useful in the short term and lead you to a point where jumping is a lot less intimidating.

Don't listen to your doctor, he's an idiot.

Sorry but that's an inappropriate comment coming from someone with apparently massive amounts of jumping experience to someone who has zero jumping experience. I don't think it's necessary for the average mtn biker to need to jump ramps/kickers/etc. However, I will say that he previously dx'd me with ITBFS for previous knee pain and it seems to have dissipated due to a bike fit and perhaps less frequent biking/miles per week. He did not mention to me in that particular visit to get a bike fit or "do you have a bike fit" but I mentioned it to him this last visit and he said "bike fit is very important". That's what happens when you spend 5-10 mins with a patient, rush, rush, rush.

I was reading the Overend skills book last night and it was giving examples of where wheelies and esp. bunny hops were more necessary/useful. The use case was a crash in front of him in a race, and the guy goes down and he bunny hops over the guy in front of him (to avoid his own crash). Seems useful (or hopping over other things like miscellaneous debris, small animals, etc)

It also covered the tuck and roll to avoid breaking clavicle, seems very useful to practice that as well.

No....you need to start small and work your way up. Start with curbs and such. Hitting 2-3' kickers at speed when you have no experience or skill....will result in.....the results you have already experienced.

If you come in an ask questions...don't get bent out of shape by the answers you will get. Yes, there are users here that have tons of experience doing lots of different things on their bikes....lots of users that are a wealth of information. This is the same kinda attitude that got you banned over at MTBr.

We get it...you are excited about the sport....but you need to slow down or you become like the annoying kid down the street that no one wants to play with.

I get ya Mikie, but the operative word here is "should."

Stealth technology doesn't guarantee you won't be spotted - the Mk 1 Mod 0 eyeball could do it at an inopportune moment.

The F-14 was big and heavy and the Phoenix system was supposed to allow stand-off attack, which wasn't always possible. It actually turned out to be a pretty good dog fighter.

What made the most difference though was Top Gun. Teach the pilot how to beat the other guy with whatever is available.

Sorry I meant it as more of tongue and cheek. Lots of doctors will tell you not to do dangerous activities and that's how I meant the comment to be taken, not to listen to that sort of advice.

If you have a knee problem and riding aggravates it, then it might mean no jumping or riding for you.

I use wheelies, hops and jumps on almost every ride i go on. Jumping is not only a "flash" skill, but can be quite useful on many trails and can be used to clear obstacles.

It's ok. Sorry for the "retaliatory efforts??" I have dual medial meniscal tears. My doc said bike or elliptical or swimming is ok. Last 2 are massively boring. Mtn biking is not. He asked me how old I was. Not sure if that really matters, as if to indicate/hint that jumping is for teenagers, etc. I didn't argue with him. A higher risk activity with potentially disastrous results when you're supporting a family, he seemed pretty upset. When you explain to someone who is risk averse and doesn't work out much, and you tell them you mtn bike, they look at you like you're crazy. What can I say...

But those are things that can potentially prevent crashes and make riding generally easier/more fun. So I'll try to practice those but stay away from ramps/jumps for now.
