Advice on purchasing bike

Lots of good suggestions here. A GG that almost IS an insider deal compared to comparable builds from other manufacturers. A bike for the kid and for yourself is gratifying on multiple levels. @herzalot, I think we're going about this the wrong way. You just tell us what bike you're eying, and we'll handle the rationalization and encouragement. We're here for you.

I think it's funny that the guys who have spent over $6k recently on a bike (or two) are advising me to put it in savings! Looking at you @Danimal and @Cornholio!

Recently? I built my bike up in January 2014, my first and only full suspension bike ever. Warranty got me my current frame in 2017. I added new wheels in 2015 with a little 10 years at the firm bonus I got. Only other parts I changed was new bars a few years ago and replaced the seat once due to a bent rail. Same fork, cranks, dropper, brakes, shifters, derailleur from 2014 still. Only other replaced parts have been the wearable cassettes/chains/brake pads/tires/grips.

I work in investing so I do put a lot of focus on socking money away for the future but my post also jokingly included dinner, and not jokingly a new bike. Any of my toy purchases are after maxing retirement accounts, 529 plans, ESPP, having enough cash for 6+ months of living, saving for the down payment we just put on our house in May, etc. :p

@herzalot don't listen to these guys instead buy 3 lightly used bikes.that someone else spent boatloads of money on..:Roflmao

You could get a nice hardtail for the death marches with your OC brothers...:gag:

A nice 120-140 trail bike like a Ripley or Hightower (all the cool kids ride em)...

And a chunk eating big bike that'll make you appreciate the trail bike even more...

Or just limit it to 2 bikes, a shiny new Trailcraft for your daughter and a b!tchen bike of your choice.
Please buy one of my 26ers! Please please please! (Just not the Giant.)

Ooops - I took a stab that you had recently purchased a bike. Most everybody on this forum has. My humblest apologies!

OK, where to start with my other replies...

@SnakeCharmer The Big Island is not where you find the famed North Shore, but thanks for suggesting a surf vacation. (The North Shore is Oahu).

@Voodoo Tom I don't buy bikes often, so I don't buy used. I can usually get a new bike for a used price, and that way I don't inherit bad bushings, blown bearings, hairline cracks, plus suspension, hubs or drivetrain that I have to replace. I did buy a used DH bike once. It was fine, but it's not an everyday bike. Also, I like having only one bike for my riding. I don't have that much fun doing the types of riding that a hardtail is built for, and don't need to split hairs between a 130-140 machine and a 160 machine. One should do just fine. I've never suffered from N+1 on bikes. Surfboards, yes, but not bikes.

@many of you - My daughter loves her Ghost and doesn't need nor want a new mtb. Disc brakes, 3x7 trigger shifters, suspension fork...

@buggravy - on the right track, sir.

@DangerDirtyD - ummmm, no.

Bottom line - as much as I would like to blow that check on a new bike - I don't actually need one yet. My Tracer is dialed. It'll be four years old this February, so I will continue my research with any demo rides I can find on bikes that intrigue me. I first need to decide between mid-long travel 29er or stay with 27.5. After riding the Firebird - a bike that ticked ALL the boxes for me on paper - then getting back on my bike, I was not convinced that I need/want a 29er.

Bikes that intrigue me:
Revel Rail
GG - Megatrail and Smash
Intense Carbine
Pivot Mach 6 (and still Firebird)
Mondraker Dune and Foxy
YT Capra and Jeffsy
Yeti SB 165 and SB 150
Eminent Haste and Onset
Commencal Meta Whatever
Transition Patrol, and maybe Sentinel
Ibis Ripmo
Banshee?

Bikes that do not intrigue me:
Specialized, Trek, Giant, GT, Cannondale, Kona and yes, Santa Cruz

You’re not even that fast where it counts; what do you know?
