Adventure passes

Yosemite NP is $35 a car now. Between fees like that and the $30 you'd pony up for the Adventure Pass, you get up to the $80 cost of an annual parks pass quickly.

Plus... don't look like a doofus at the NP entry kiosks. Flash your pass, take your map (or not) and GTF going. At NFAP fee areas I leave it on the dash, never been tagged with it there.

If you enter Yellowstone via the south gate (through Grand Teton NP) they will hit you up for $70 - one pass for Yellowstone, and one for Grand Teton. You can pretty much drive all around Grand Teton without getting hit up for a pass (for example, if you drive up from Jackson), but if you EXIT via Yellowstone - they will charge you as you leave. It can be quite an eye-opener, because at that point it's not like you have the option to turn around :)

!!!

I just buy the pass at the entrance kiosk, they always take CCs. I've never gone anywhere to buy one or had one sent to me.

Our local market sells them since we’re in National Forest..
you may find the same in the mtns you’re wanting to play in.

Many of the 711, convenience stores where I live sell them, and there is an rei a few minutes away in Arcadia,

From my understanding, when my wife was going to get me one for my Christmas stocking, was that they were not selling the annual because it ended with the end of the year. That the 2019 pass would be coming out after the new year.

So from my understanding .they run through the calendar year, not a year from when you buy it?

And,
When the new years passes are usually in stock

It expires one year from the month you buy it. So you actually get more than a year. They normally punch the month when you buy it.

True, but, they lag in getting the passes out at the new year.

I tried to buy one last year when we rode Yeager, but the guv hadn't delivered 2019 passes (need a 2019 pass for them to stamp that you bought in Jan) and they had run out of 2018. And all that was when the government was fully funded.

Brett, I was talking there about the national parks pass. That pass does cover NFAP fee areas, so I thought it was on topic. I guess the NP entrance kiosk doesn't help much in the Santa Anas. Since I almost always have a current parks pass, I never think about NFAP. :)

I've never seen a notice on a windshield or a ranger issuing them at the HJ lot, fwiw.

The kiosks are not always manned. I have experienced this at JTNP and Lake Mead. That's when they get you coming out. Not likely you would get in via a closed kiosk and then exit via a closed kiosk but if you do, I strongly urge you to buy a lottery ticket before the day is over!

Exactly, I was agreeing with you just expounding based on my experience trying to buy an Adventure Pass last January. I'm assuming here, but I bet there's a lag for both National Parks passes and Adventure Passes, especially this year.

Yes, I’ve driven in/out many times with kiosks closed. Not great if you’re needing the NFAP component of the card. Somehow I’m still not incarcerated. But that could change when your LEO friends come after me for tossing all those love letters.:geek:

And if you are lucky.....the salesperson doesn't know what they are doing and forgets to punch the month.
That's why I always try to buy them in January. Get the 2019 pass, which is the same one they still sell in December 2019 that is good to Dec 2020. No punch = 2 year pass. I have run into a ranger at San Juan who saw it wasn't punched and did so for me. Of course, I had just purchased it "last week". But if it's hanging from your mirror and you aren't there, they can't do anything about it. And at least you tried, unlike the scofflaws in this thread who refuse to buy one. I figure it helps fund recreation and that is something I support. Most of the Forest service budget these days is taken up by firefighting to the detriment of other needs like recreation. I have an America the Beautiful pass this year so no Adventure pass for me...
