2020 Wrightwood 50........Unoffical

Well...I've been trying. Can we do a 50km for the Over 50 set? I may have to consider building up my old Klein Pinnacle (10kg, as plush as a shopping cart). Conditions on Manza are really good right now, only 2 downed trees, and recent treadwork on the lower half.

That GPX file is a Goggle Earth killer.

Some recent training rides are shown below. TrailForks indicates that I'm crossing paths with a 'VikingRider' (he passed me on a climb recently, as do they all) who is suspiciously doing very big rides combining all segments of the WW50.

Having a proper GPS is no sure thing either if you don't know how to use it or pay attention. Just ask @Sidewalk .

I was at the cooler when he climbed up the hill and turned the wrong direction down the road. I called him back and sent him the right way, but rather than turn onto Boy Scout he went around the corner and climbed the road for a while. I heard there were a few other wrong turns as well. Not sure if it was that same year or the following one but he was in a sprint finish with Carl and missed the turn to the Yodeller at the end. Carl backed off and let him go the wrong way, then took the right turn and the win. :Roflmao
I don't think Carl tried to fake me out, unless maybe he did.

Either way, fair move on his part. Earned him the win and official course record.

I literally just 5 minutes ago finally figured out where I went wrong last year. So after climbing back up to Hwy 2, after descending Blue Ridge trail, on the fireroad from Mountain High, instead of descending Logjammer and then over to Leprechaun. I went all the way to Upper Jackson Lake trail took it down to the lake and then started heading the way you return after descending Boyscout. I got to Big Pines Hwy, rode it to Appletree Campground. Then my GPS died. I figured I must be going the wrong way so turned around rode back to Jackson Lake.

Then I descended to Leprechaun reversed down the fireroad to the trail exit. Saw two rides coming up the last bit of Leprechaun, they told me I was going the wrong way, so I turned around and rode back to Jackson Lake with them. Then I did the Jackson Lake/Big Pines section all over again. This time descended Leprechaun correctly!! Now I was back on track. Climbed Boyscout to Fenner to Vincent Gap. Descended Manzanita and caught up with the other Hooligans!! Thank God, I joined them because I thought I was pretty confident on the rest of the ride. Until we got to Table Mountain. I didn't even know that was part of the course. Started heading down to Wrightwood when @mtnbikej said where are you going? So stuck with them and finished my 57.5 mile, 11,902 feet climbing version of Wrightwood 50.

So the way I figured this out is I was reviewing @mtnbikej & @Faust29 Strava routes because hoping tomorrow to start at Mtn. High descend to Leprechaun and do the correct loop from there to the end of Table Mtn. trail and climb the road back to Mtn. High for a finish. In preparation for the 2020 Wrightwood 50 on my new SS. Hopefully, I can provide a decent trail conditions status at least on the second half of the course. Then I hope to do the first half next weekend.

With such a early start time does anyone have plans to camp the night before?
Depending on the weather, if not too cold, I am thinking of camping. Maybe at Appletree campground so that my wife and kid can possibly see me ride by toward the end and then go get an amazing burger and beers at the Yodeler. I highly recommend the Hangover burger. There is nothing like getting runny egg stuff in your beard after a tough ride. Runny egg and salt from your sweat, a recipe for a great burger.
