2019 Kokopelli Epic Adventure

Strava put it at 20 miles / 3500' from Paradox to the start of WE at Burro Pass.

The first 10 miles don't look that bad.

Or........

It is only 6 miles / 1000' more than staying on regular course.

The other thing to keep in mind about this option.....with the winter we have been having....there is a very good chance that Burro Pass will still be covered in snow.

We did the Whole Enchilada over Memorial Day weekend a few years back and Hazard County was the highest we could get to, and it had just opened the day before. The shuttle co's weren't going that high.

^^THIS^^ TWE doesn't *usually* get open until July and the locals on MTBR are saying it may be August this year due to all the snow on Burro Pass.

Hey guys, I am rethinking driving out the entire way from So Cal on Wednesday and am considering breaking up the drive in 2 days. Anyone else doing the same? I was thinking of driving to either Mesquite or St. George on Tuesday, then head out to Moab on Wednesday.

Rob,
Get with @Old Skool , I think his drive and ride buddy had to bail on the trip. He is looking for a plan.

When will you make it GJ? Day 3?

I'll be doing that on the way back.

Yeah, looking to make new plans, my drive and ride buddie @luskie bailed on me. I have a room rented in Moab for Wednesday night, I am happy to drive, have room for myself and 1-2 others. Planning on leaving at '0-Dark Thirty' on Wednesday morning, (need to work on Tuesday) Just need to find a way to get to the Fruita trailhead on Thursday morning or someone to drive my truck back to Moab after dropping us off at the trailhead in Fruita. Anyone looking to make plans or can accommodate me in their ride, post something up here and we can get in touch.

Yeah, I was originally planning on making the whole drive out on Wednesday. But I'm thinking of breaking it up into two days starting on Tuesday afternoon simply to save my back.

I'm flying to Grand Junction Wednesday night, and back to Orange County Sunday morning.
My bike is looking for a ride (as I mentioned it before)...
Additionally, I'm trying to organize a ride from Moab to GJ on Saturday night. If anyone else is looking to join me please let me know.

Did you get the first trip or the second trip?

Oh gotcha. I'll arrive in Grand Junction on the day the ride starts...Thursday. I am staying in Moab on Wed and Mikie's wife is shuttling a bunch of us over on Thursday morning. I can still bring your bike if you need help.

I can also take a bike, but also need someone to throw in with getting me & my bike to the trailhead in Fruita on Thursday, or someone has a friend who is not riding who could bring my truck back to Moab after the start?

A list of uninformed (possibly stupid) questions inspired by REI 20% coupon:

Is there a limit of how much gear can we pack?
Do I need to bring my own chair?
tents: multiperson or individual? tent size?
Blow up mattress or pad?
Battery charging?
Will they send us (rookies) a list of suggested items for camp? on the bike?
TW - Trailside delivery?
Should I order the endure or roadie IMTB jersey? How quickly do they deliver?

The not so short answer: The amount of gear is limited by the size of duffle/gear bag recommended in the email sent out to you by Bikerpelli. Do keep this in mind though, at every campsite we arrive to at the end of the day, you will have to carry, drag, or muscle over your bag to your chosen area. Some like to stay close to the trucks while some choose a more solitary and quieter place to set up their tent. Also keep in mind that the Bikerpelli crew has to stack 90 gear bags
You are allowed to bring a camp chair to lounge in. Does not have to be packed in your main gear bag but do tag it with your name or a identifying tag. You will also need a small gear bag/lunch box for your extra nutritional needs that can be accessed at the lunch stops. I put sunscreen, extra gloves, some extra dry bandanas and my Tailwind powder. You will be able to refill your water supply at the lunch stop. You will have access to your chair and small gear bag but not your big bag.
Speaking of lunch, they usually have a nice spread of fresh fruits and sandwich making accoutrements :)
I use a inflatable sleeping pad plus some pieces of foam to sleep on the floor. I took a couple of personal battery backups to recharge my phone, GoPro and Garmin with. They do have a big charging station setup near one of the trucks that you can share with others.
If you do go to REI the best piece of gear you can get is a head mounted flashlight. Frees up your hands if you have to eat dinner by candlelight
Do bring some cash because they have a couple of masseuse that are available at the campsite. I don’t remember the fee but it was reasonable.
I’m sure I’ll remember more items as the date gets nearer.

Is there a limit of how much gear can we pack? yes whatever fits in your larger duffel bag and your small sag bag.

Do I need to bring my own chair? yes but it doesn't have to go in the duffel bag

tents: multiperson or individual? tent size? whatever fits in your duffel bag, I think mine was considered a 3 person

Blow up mattress or pad? Either, I used a walmart twin sized air matress with battery powered pump.

Battery charging? They have a charging bank setup at camp but it'd be smart to bring your own portable charger. I have a bigger one for camp and a tiny one I carry in my camelbak.

Will they send us (rookies) a list of suggested items for camp? on the bike? Yes and I think it's posted on the bikerpelli website somewhere

TW - Trailside delivery? Nope

Should I order the endure or roadie IMTB jersey? How quickly do they deliver?
Both but be sure to order up at least one size on the club cut jersey, enduro one runs pretty true to size.

Okay, just found out my new Niner RIP RDO 29er has finally shipped and on its way! Stoked to have this bike for the trip! It comes with Maxxis Minion 2.5 up front and Maxxis Aggressor 2.5 in rear. Are these tires fine for this trip or should I swap them out to Ardent up front and Ardent Race in the rear?

I like the tire combo....just not the size. 2.5 is big to pedal around....anywhere. But we are all different.

I have the DHF 2.5/Aggressor 2.5 on my Tracer on Santa Cruz Reserve 37mmID wheels and it's my favorite tire/wheel combo *but* I wouldn't want it on that Kokopelli ride. I'd take my Primer with an Ardent 2.4/Aggressor 2.3 set up. My buddy has been running the Maxxis Forekaster F/R on his Primer and swears by them. Just ran them all weekend in Sedona and from the looks of them, I wasn't sure how well he'd do with all those rocks but he survived just fine.
