Wildlife encounters

Descending GMR to east fork my buddy saw this walking across the street and posed on the side.

Riding down Lynx at Aliso on Friday when I heard a loud noise to my right and before I could even process it, a large deer bolted across the trail about 2 feet in front of me. First thought: Holy sh**, that deer almost took me out. Second thought: Holy sh**, what was a chasing the deer that made it run so fast? It was a reality check about how quickly these large animals can be on top of you while riding. I didn't even have a chance to hit my brakes. Had it been a mountain lion, I would have had a very bad day.

There are NO mtn lions in the coastal parks. Biggest carnivore is a bobcat. The deer was spooked by you and despite not having head lights it jumped in front of you instead of away. Glad you didn’t ball up going down Lynx, it’s running pretty rough right now.

Well, other than the EIR I previously linked that recorded Mt Lion scat in Aliso.
Though it probably was just a startled deer.
We were running in a group through Aliso some years ago and spooked three deer. One of them ran into a friend. Knocked her flat on her side, bruises and scrapes all over.

I went up to our desert retreat this weekend to hang out with some extended family. My cousin and I, being the nature freaks that we are, leave a table top lying flat on the ground next to the house so that desert creatures can take refuge underneath it. Except for in the cold of Winter, there is usually some cool little creepy crawlers under there and this time was no exception. There was a sizable Desert Hairy Scorpion under there, along with a Yucca Night Lizard. The lizard scurried over to the scorpion and the capture was made. Lizard for breakfast, is what it was going to be.
