Who's riding at night?

If you're not really worried about the light lasting for hours, one of the rechargeable units makes sense. I have two (one is in Oregon...) of the Cycle Torch Shark lights from Amazon. China Cheapies... They're a couple years old, but are still bright and hold a charge. For $39 it was worth it. Now that our Motorway loops are upwards of 3 hours in the dark, I use that one to climb. On low power it lasted the entire loop last night.

I turned on the Brighteyes 1600 for our jaunt across Main Divide and for the Motorway descent... @Sidewalk recommended Brighteyes awhile back, and I've been very happy with it. Running it on high on the kitchen counter gave somewhere in the neighborhood of 7 hours run time. More than enough... The battery pack has two velcro straps, and takes literally, less than a minute to secure to the top tube.
Do you use the diffuser lens in the Brighteyes 1600? I tried it last night and felt that it cut the brightness down a bunch, but widened the beam out. The way it secures to bars, routing the wires to compact battery, and length of life make it a decent choice in my opinion. Thanks

I have it in now, but am thinking about taking it out for the reasons you mention.

You are aware that OC Parks close at Sunset. Don't be that guy.
There are rules for riding closed trails at night. Do not ride as a group. When getting near the trail head go dark. Nobody can see you so you are safe. If somebody does see you AKA "Mr. Ranger" douse your lights and take your time to escape. I find it a real blast watching people with flash lights looking for me. Don't be a dick and turn your light on for a moment just to piss them off, they are already pissed that they cannot see you.
Happy poached trails in the dark

Cannot like

I test mine in the house every now and then, and it holds a charge just as well as when I bought it last year.

Now to add another light for the helmet...

I'm impressed. A real nice little kit for for $25. I rarely ride at night, more late afternoon rides that run late. So hopefully it will last a lot longer than a couple years! As long as it doesn't spontaneously catch on fire, no complaints!
Thanks for the suggestion!
