Well Maxxis Is At It Again.......Rekon Race

Just got two new Rekon 2.4S WT EXO TR.
Anybody still loving these tires?

I have a 2.4 on the front of the Chameleon, but I only have a couple rides on it. A fireroad suffer fest and some semi-chunky fun down in the Aliso area. I've had that 2.5 Minion motorcycle tire on the front for the last couple months, so my senses may be dulled a bit. The Rekon certainly feels more supple than the moto tire, but it seems that I have to run it a couple PSI higher than I'd like. Due to the 27mm rims I'm running? I like the front under 20 PSI, but that seems way too squirmy...

I'll see how she feels on the loose scree of Motorway tonight!

After my nail experience, I built up a new rear wheel with my old 240 hub and a 29mm internal width rim. I figure that's close enough to 30mm and it fits WTB's marketing so. ..
My Chisel is boost so I'm sure this 2.4 will fit. Looks like an Ardent on Steroids and should be a definite improvement over the undersized Specialized tires I've been running.
Things are getting real loose, real fast in the Gabes and I need more bite and more float than I got now.

At this point does it rank up there with your favorite ever tire?
Now that I'm stationary let me elaborate. So far I have about 100 miles on them front and rear. I actually started with one on the front and liked it so much I ordered one for the rear. I'm not the best at putting my words down but for me they just work. They roll very fast and are very predictable. I have pushed them about as hard as I plan to and they just stick. They also seem to be holding up good. This is one of the very few tires that I will keep on until they are worn out. If you have any specific questions let me know.

I don't really think they are plus, maybe extra... Ha.
I had a DHR II 3C on and the performance was excellent. The longevity was not. Overall, too much tire for most of my rides.
My Specialized FastTrack 2.3 is barely a 2.2. And the Ground Control is not quite 2.3. Save those for less chunky days
On the trail the Rekon are visibly bigger than what I got...
Mount them up tomorrow but probably can't ride again until Monday

Please take that one more decimal place. I won't run anything under 2.3757! ;)

Got up early to mount the Rekon. The first one went on textbook perfectly. Not a drop of sealant on the tire or floor. Beaded and held air at 45psi using my floor pump. F@ck yeah! I am the King of the garage! Should have video'd that one for the boys... Another 10 minutes and I can go eat breakfast.
And then reality hit. Same tire, same rim. Much harder to mount. One of those f@ckers that wants to fight you till the end. Then it wouldn't seal. Kept leaking from the valve stem area. Tighten down the stem nut some and still leaks. By then I noticed the sealant oozing from a spoke hole... Tape issue.
Pulled off the ornery beast, cleaned, re-taped, sealed, and holding air.
That took 45 minutes.
These tires measure out at 2.35 on 29mm id rims using my digital calipers

Now about that breakfast...

Just because you did it first doesn't mean you're not imitating me.

And since I had the calipers out...
The Specialized FastTrack 2.3 measures to 2.25 on a 25mm id rim. With minimal tread and volume, this was a poor choice for a rear tire for me. Save it for some fireroad...
The Ground Control, which I think is Specialized's best tire, measured out to 2.3 as claimed. Good front tire, like a poor man's Nobby Nic.

has anyone tried the 2.25x29 recon? I'm thinking of using it as a rear tire on my XC bike. I was actually considering running them front/rear.

Yep... It, literally, didn't last one mile on Main Divide. It died with two punctures through the center of the tread.

The 2.25 doesn't come in a dual compound flavor. Maybe a lighter guy can get away with running the speedier compounds on the rear... Not me!

I think "Maxx speed" translates roughly to "keep it TFA from any rocks". :p

My one ride report on the 29 Rekon 2.4

This tire is awesome!

I went out on Brown El P this am for the maiden run and was very impressed. The loose, mid-summer, conditions were no match for the traction, front and rear. I tried my best to get these tires to slip-crossing ruts, off-Camber, loose over hard. Grip for days. The kind of traction that throws sand in your face.
Great cornering. None of that vague but manageable transition that plagues the Ardent. Lean these over with confidence.
And, coming from the Minion SS/FastTrack , it was nice to have a tire with some knobs to brake with.

Now, let's see how durable they are, and how many miles they can handle.

I ran both tires at 21psi on 29mm rims.

Outstanding Ross! So glad to hear this! Keep us posted on durability.
Thanks man!
