Well Maxxis Is At It Again.......Rekon Race

Sorry to derail a bit, but have any of you tried the Minion SS/Rock Razor/Slaughter? All are semi slicks. Personally I’m a fan of the Minion SS, but tires are so subjective...to me you get a great rolling tire with side knobs for cornering, however, I’m not sure if they come in a weight that is acceptable for you guys. Ok, derail complete.

The 2018 27.5 plus Hightower’s come with a 2.8 Rekon on a 40 width rim and I have to be honest, they ROCK! Supper grippy! In fact I “still” have the original on the front of my Hightower. It is just now slightly beginning to lose its grip as I am finally wearing it down some. I threw a 2.8 DHRII (120 tpi) on the Rear and waiting for it to fade so I can throw a new 2.8 Rekon back on. I have two new ones just sitting on the bench waiting to jump on.

With that said, my thoughts are the much narrow Rekon may not be as sticky without the width and fluffyness of the lower air pressure. Just a guess on my part. Be very interested how one of yah’s think after trying.

Hey Mike!
I have used the SS with much success on my Yeti 26’er. I know @Tom the Bomb is running one as I type and he likes it a lot!

I got a free Ardent Race and I put it on the rear and has an Aggressor up front and it is a great combo for my area. I rarely have used SS, but for the price I could afford to try it out.

My wife runs a 26x2.3 minion SS front for casual riding and loves it.

The knob height on the 29er is really low... I don't know how they call it a Rekon, considering it's descended from the plus Rekon that they spec on the Hightower.

I may still be a little biased though, as my 29er Rekon lasted all of 20 miles and got two punctures through the center of the tread on a fire road. Granted... It was Main Divide, but still...

Count me among the unimpressed with their newest lightweight offerings...

But you're an outlier...:)

Does the phrase "bull in a china shop" ring a bell? :whistling::whistling::whistling: :cautious: :laugh:

Finesse is not my forte. You should have seen me on UHJ yesterday. :p

I'm going to gracefully bow out of any future discussions about lightweight race tires. If you need me, I'll be in the Minion thread with @herzalot . :p
Atta boy!

And doesn't it seem like about 1/4th of our threads end up being about tires at some point? Inevitable, I guess.

So about your pedals - do you prefer clips or flats? :sneaky: J/K!!! :D

I've tried them all. I ran the Rock Razor for a year on a Tallboy and my even on my Mach 6 when it was my only bike. I was very happy with it in SoCal but it was the worst tire I've ever used in SW Utah. So bad that on a 4 day trip I had to break down and buy a new tire at Over the Edge. After reading such wonderful things about the Minion SS, I put it on my Primer when it was new (to me) and promptly went on a 4 day Spring trip to the Phoenix area. I liked it but not as much as the Rock Razor and it was changed out for the Slaughter in the Fall when I took a trip to Crested Butte. I wanted a lil' more tread and was trying to go XC for all the climbing out there. I shouldn't have bothered because I would have need a 750W ebike to make some of those climbs  When I got back home, I wasn't overly impressed with the Slaughter traction while climbing in loose terrain here in SoCal (San Diego and OC). I switched it out for an Aggressor and that's been the best compromise for me...I'd prefer something lighter but it grips well and I've yet to get a flat on an Aggressor (I should have never said that out loud) and I have had it on multiple bikes.

Pffffffttttt........29er.
Y'know, honestly, it seems that debate is nearing its end. I predicted that as soon as the World Cup DH podium and the EWS podium was stuffed with 29ers, the debate would be over. We are very nearly there. There are some riders who still feel better aboard smaller wheels, but not many. Oh, and Slopestyle and other "trick" based events will stay on small wheels for obvious reason, but that's not mt. biking.

I'm waiting for 30.99" myself - shod with really light Maxxis Rekon tires with tiny tread patterns.

(See what I did there?)

I thought the Rekon already is race. More burl, please. I’m not racing.
That's why they also make the Minion DHF/R.;)

But like @shawndoh says above, they have a boatload of tires in this category right now. And it seems they are all essentially the same, or similar: Ardent Race, Ikon, Rekon, and now the Rekon Race. I'd like to see them focus more on making the XC stuff more durable than trying to introduce a tread pattern for every little nuance of racing. o_O

I saw an interview last year with a Maxxis guy who said that the Rekon+ is their fastest growing and best selling tire segment. I'd hazard a guess that the 29er Rekon and now the Rekon Race is driven more by the marketing and sales departments than engineering. Trying to kick up some excitement that the aging Ikon and Ardent Race can't.

Adding to the derail, I was running the Slaughter on the rear when @mike took me down Coldwater off of Upper HJ. Might as well have been running a slick back there. Took the chute sliding pucker factor to a scary level

If that was the case....we would all still be running Kenda Nevegals and thinking they were the best tire in the world.

Tire technology is always advancing.

Maybe the new Rekon Race will do some of the things that the Ardent Race doesn't do well....like cornering. I've always felt he AR needed to be ridden aggressively to work well.

I think the Ikon rolls fast.....but other designs could be faster.

I liked the Aspen 2.1....even without EXO/TR offerings....I'd still like to try the EXO/TR 2.25

Personally I like the fact that they are still coming up with new tires that aren't 2.6+WT.
