Down in the OC, I had my outfits pretty much dialed in for any temperature and riding conditions. Up here in Canadia, I'm getting shredded... My sun sleeves are not up to the task. I have a 3/4 sleeve Troy Lee that I love, but it's too heavy to wear on days with long climbs...

Looking on-line, I see a few long sleeve jerseys that look promising. What do you guys like to wear for UV protection as well as for protection from the overgrowth? I'd like to bleed a little less on these rides... :p

The trick is that it has to be long sleeve, lightweight, and wicking. A pocket wouldn't hurt either...

Edit: My next post will be asking about pants. I hate pants. But my legs also look like I've taken up knife fighting with Yoda.

Welcome to the San Gabriel Mountains!

I have a couple of lightweight Fox long sleeve jerseys. One is somewhat vented. I've been wearing them a lot lately due to the overgrowth and poison oak on the trails. I also have some G-Form Pro-X elbow guards. They are the thinnest ones that G-Form makes. Feels pretty much just like wearing arm warmers, but have a little protection built in. The nice part about the pads is that I can wear a normal short sleeve jersey and I can take them off if it gets too hot or they are not needed anymore. BTW, same answer for the pants. I use G-Form knee pads if I need to keep the legs protected.

I've been doing a lot of riding in the last year in areas that are terribly overgrown. A few things I've done to lessen the annoyance:
1) Long sleeves. I find that the new TLD jersey's are the best price, weight/heat, performance factor for me. Fox has some good ones, which actually have some built in abrasion protection, but they are a bit like pedaling in garbage bags. I do have a set of POC VPD Air elbows that are packable that I use as an in between step for riding with a short sleeve jersey and having protection I can take on/off during the ride. I don't find them any more distracting or hot than a set of sun sleeves.
2) Legs/Pants. I have a pair of fox riding pants. Overall, I much prefer to wear a long coverage light weight knee pad than I do wearing pants. I use the 7IDP Sam Hill Knee's as they come far enough up my thigh to lock into my bib and come down low enough on my shin to protect the bottom of my legs. Pants are ok, but there is no way for me to get around being hot while pedaling in them.
3) Cutting my bars down. I prefer 800mm bars, but some of hte riding i've been doing lately has lead me to cut my bars down to 780mm to get a smidge more clearance.
4) Vasoline as skin protection. I know it sounds nuts, but it works.

Actually really glad you brought this up.
Yeah those 16 foot wide singletracks down in the OC don't require much protection. :whistling::p

As you are aware, @Voodoo Tom and I do some of the sketchiest sections of shrubbery infested trails. I have scars on top of my scars and have meant to ask and do some research.
Has anyone tried anything like this? I mean for $6 bucks!
EDIT: That is $6 bucks a sleeve, does not come as a pair. Those tricky bastages!

Added bonus is on hot summer days it can withstand up to 900 degrees. Bonus!

I would be concerned with breathability.... ?

Yep, our San Gabes are MEAN! Eventually, your skin thickens up and balance is restored in The Force.

I wear under garments for protection. And yes, it gets shredded.

No, your skin doesn't get thicker- it gets thinner!
My dermatologist says my skin is so abraded that my arms look like I'm 80 years old!

I wear long sleeve wicking tees and pants when possible. I find looser sleeves work better than arm warmers. And well designed pants are no warmer than wearing pads.

Think the San Gabes are bad... Come up to the northeastern part of Canada. The Antelope Valley, we will show you getting tore up. You just learn to deal and bitch about it a lot.

We have a Patagonia store near here, but it's presently boarded up! I will check it out for shirts after the boards come down... I love the hoodie I have.

Check out the clearance racks at the outlet stores for long sleeve tees. I scored several Nike Dri-Fit for $15 each. Wal-Mart has Russell and Champion stuff dirt cheap. Ross and Marshalls sometimes have good finds too.

Funny I was just looking for a thread like this

@Faust29

Bar none most comfortable hot weather SPF protection I have ever worn.

I am to no longer get sun on the arms and sunscreen on the arms suck.
