USFS says eMTB not significantly different than MTB

Let's keep it civil here guys. There is too much nasty disagreement all around us. On IMTB, let's try to be accurate with our information and be courteous and thoughtful in our responses. E-motos ≠ e-MTBs. They are different things. The USFS report is referring only to Class 1 e-mtbs. Those are limited to under 20mph and the motor only works with pedal input and power is limited to a couple hundred watts. Whether we like it or not, e-mtbs are here to stay and are part of the scene now. We need to help people discern between those and e-motos and help everyone understand trail etiquette and ride responsibly.

Love you guys. Have fun out there and be great ambassadors for the sport!
Yes agree with this 100%.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment.... eBikes are legal on most of the trails here in NC. I rarely see them... or when I see them they are Class1 eBikes and people are using them because they can't ride the trail otherwise. Either they are older, or they are just starting out, or there is another reason why they want to hit the trails but just need a little help.
There are one or two idiots where I ride that use eBikes to tear around the trails at 2x the speed as anyone else... but who ride 1/4 as far as I do. Whatever. One of my riding buddies rides an eBike because he just isn't in the best shape. It allows us to ride together. From that perspective I think it is awesome.

Thanks for posting this. Cheers!

Like anything, it depends on the locale. At Greer Ranch in SoCal, there's more motorized bikes that actual bikes most days. My group are the oldest people out there and none of us are on ebikes. Here in Prescott, we have a group that calls themselves the Ageless Wonders (most over 70 and one guy is 82) and 80% of them are on ebikes but mostly ride slower than fast guys on standard MTB's. We also have plenty of guys 30-60 on ebikes I run across. Up in Flagstaff this weekend, I only saw 3 people with ebikes at the TH.

Bro, sounds like you’re havin’ a blast riding that high horse! I bet you get loads of fun on the chairlift watchin’ all us e-bike hooligans shred. Ever thought about joinin’ us, or are you just Strava stalkin’?

And yo, how long can you manual for, huh? Oh wait, you prolly got those safety wheels on. Batteries ignitin’ and Surrons tearin’ it up? Sounds like a wild campfire story, bro! Just remember, snitches get stitches. Next time, just pedal faster and keep up!
Go away, troll.

Some of those transbikes allow you to coast on the motor for several seconds with only a touch of the pedal. So you no longer need any finesse to go over obstacles, just tap the pedal and let the motor drive you over the obstacle without fear of a pedal strike, or dear god even worse, having to put any effort into a physical sport.
You ignored my statement, and are ignorant about e-bikes. If you stop pedaling a Class 1 bike, the bike operates like any other bike, that is it will travel as far as the momentum allows, but the assist stops. You might try to develop enough character to learn what you post about.

Ignore list

I like how you tell them you're putting them on the list.

Maybe, but in reality class type is irrelevant if it's on the trail. I'm for then in allowed trails, and against them on prohibited trails.
I agree they should be on legal trails only (which means not in the OC except on a few fire roads like Maple Springs AFAIK). However, I've seen them all over the place and know individuals who ride them anywhere they desire, anytime they desire because the areas (except a few) aren't policed.

I've read estimates of 60%

It depends where you ride, what eBike you own, and what settings you use. The steeper the trail and the greater the assistance, the greater the difference. Two similar riders can ride the same eBike, and one can use a lower setting than the other and get a greater workout. The reality however is that you burn the most calories when you are working the hardest - which is usually when people amp up their eBike settings - effectively mitigating the calorie burn. Heck, some eBikes even come with a "walk" mode where you can walk it up a hike-a-bike without any effort on your part. My favorite was the guy who posted on YouTube about how he was driven to the trailhead of Joplin... just so he could ride down the trail in an eBike :) It made me wonder whether there was such a thing as effectively gaining weight while riding a bike :)

Walk mode is a useful feature when you are going up hills so steep that you and the motor can no longer propel the bike any higher, spin out or loop the bike and you have to shove the bike up to the top. Walk mode is also pretty handy getting your bike up flights of stairs when no elevator is available.

I agree but it doesn’t always work well. Traction is an issue if it is steep and loose. My experience with one of my bikes. Glad it has it but not perfect
