The shotgun lovers thread...

Buckshot (anything heavier than #4) will penetrate four sheets of drywall at close range... But will not penetrate a 5th. Birdshot at close range will penetrate two sheets of drywall (one wall), and will not penetrate the paper of a third sheet at close range. Shot through a wall, even at close range, birdshot will probably not break human skin.

Your house sounds like a mess... :whistling:

Well, if you are a California resident - you can't buy them anywhere else.

You can buy them anywhere you want, even online. You just have to have them shipped to a California gun shop (that has a Federal Firearms License, or FFL), and meet all the requirements including background check, waiting period, and (effective 1 January, 2015) a valid safety certificate. Most gun shops charge a small transfer fee.

I think it is a little ridiculous having a vet complete a safety certificate every 5 years... but no one asked me :)

Yes, but that is essentially buying them here. Those will all be registered by state DOJ.

Not sure what you're getting at. It is estimated that half of all firearms in this state are illegal/unregistered. If you want an unregistered rifle, go buy one in another state and just drive it in - like all the gang-bangers and drug-runners do.

I personally don't believe that making it harder and more expensive to follow the law will get more people to follow it... but I'm not a Democrat :) I believe in making it more expensive to NOT follow the law.

I don't own a shotgun yet, but I am interested in getting a Rifle and Shotgun in the near future. I am interested in target shooting and possibly hunting small game for sport/dinner. My 10 year old son and I like taking the pellet guns out in the desert and responsibly plinking (Cleaning up our targets).

Can anyone suggest a place to shoot in the NF? I feel a little strange about taking my son to the range if we are only going to be shooting air rifles...

On another note; if anyone is interested in taking a responsible new shooter under their wing, I would be interested in learning/finding a shooting buddy.

I don't want to derail the thread, so someone should suggest a good beginner shotgun for me. LOL.

If you are going to shoot air rifles, you can go pretty much anywhere in the NF, so long as you don't shoot at wildlife.

If you are going to be target shooting (with rifles), best is to go to an outdoor range like Raahauge's or Prado Olympic. They will rent you firearms and you can try them out and decide for yourself what works best.

If you yourself have not had a lot of experience with firearms, I would recommend you take a safety/training course. Call Grant Topping - 949-395-0989. He is an Army Airborne vet with combat jumps into Iraq and works for a firearms training organization. Tell him what you are looking for and he will be able to point you in the right direction. I recommend him (as a person) though I have not been through any of his courses.

Prado is a great place to shoot and they used to have beginners clinics in the summer. Not sure if they are still offered. I'm tied up for the next three weekends, but after that I'd be happy to show you the safe way to enjoy the course. Caution - it can be as addictive as MTB'g and the N+1 Rule is strictly enforced.

Resurrecting an old thread, but with all the crazy people in this country shooting people, it was interesting to see this story about the California ammunition law that went into effect on July 1:

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/califo...d-check-law-blocked-100-sales-in-first-month/

People with unregistered firearms are finding it a little more difficult to buy ammunition. Of course, unlimited ammunition can be had after a short drive to Vegas... but just the fact that it is inconveniencing some folks is a good thing.

Gun lovers are going to hate this but I feel that we will never see a beginning to the end of gun violence until all guns are banned countywide in the US of A.

I wouldn't recommend that drive, importing ammo is now illegal.

I don't know that I am a gun "lover" per se, but I own a gun, and it doesn't inconvenience me in the slightest.

I also know that banning guns wouldn't stop gun violence. Look at Honduras. Illegal to own guns there, and the gun violence rate for the entire country is higher than that of inner city Detroit. It's illegal to own a gun in Mexico... no gun violence there! LOL! Kinda like saying - if we only outlawed hard drugs, there would be no illegal drug use!

However there is certainly a middle ground that can be reached. Right now (despite what the NRA would like to believe) there is plenty of gun control in this country. It is illegal to own a surface to air missile. It is illegal to own an automatic weapon. It is illegal to own a tank with a working main gun. It is illegal to own mortar rounds or hand grenades. Within this context, I see no reason why we can't reign in some of the ridiculous aftermarket gadgetry that makes these mass crimes more likely. Things like bump stocks (which even as a veteran I had never heard of), drum magazines, etc.

Within the context of someone who already owns an illegal gun... you think they will hesitate to pick up a box of rounds at a Las Vegas Walmart?

Ask Mexico how that is going for them?
Besides, there are so many gun manufacturer's outside the US that are still going to manufacture guns, how can anyone of sane comprehension think for one second that people that break the law are going to stop breaking the law. With all the drugs that come across our borders how can anyone not realize that so will guns? So banning guns in the US is only going to remove them from the hands of the law abiding citizens and that does not make sense. First off, our 2nd Amendment right secures our right to bear arms. It's not just for hunting and plinking targets. It's both protection for our family, from foreign countries, and from our own government.
Gun abuse is a health issue, not a gun issue. I have never had any of my guns act inappropriately. When we stop holding inanimate object responsible and start holding bad people accountable then we can start to see progress. I know there will be many people here that disagree with my perspective. So let's envision for a moment:

1) Ban Guns, people will use knives.
2) What, now ban knives? Now use sharpened Spoons?
3) Ban Spoons? Fertilizer? Vans? Trucks? Pressure Cookers? Commercial Airplanes?
4) Padded cells for all?

If people want to hurt people, they are going to find a way. I think the first school shooting happened in 1870. How come domestic violence is increasing in this country? Personally? I think the mental health of our country is in vast decline. I know the solution, but I won't post it here cuz it violates our agreement. :(;)

This isn't Honduras and it never will be. What I meant is that the first step to getting the issue under control is to eliminate the option of having guns all together. That makes it harder to obtain guns and that alone takes a bite out of the problem. Nothing can make gun violence go away "overnight" but steps toward ending the issue must be taken if we are serious about getting it under control and I am sure that this is one step in the right direction. Perhaps you cannot imagine a world without guns? I certainly can.

My Dad bought me a Remington 870 12 gage full choke 32 inch trap gun when I was 13. Beautiful shotgun. My family had a walnut farm by Visalia so I had a place to shoot it. I tried to dove hunt in Blythe with it back in the day ( 1987-1988) with my buddy and his dad. I couldn't hardly hit any doves. My buddy with his Remington 12 gage 28 inch open choke had doves raining down on him. That same trip a hunter 60 or so feet away shot and wounded a dove. It was fluttering on the ground so he took a shot a the dove on the ground to finish it off. Guess who was 10 feet behind the dove? I got hit with about 12-14 pellets. They when in my neck, my groin, legs and arms. They hit, went in and traveled up my skin for like 3-6 inches. That was my last dove hunting trip. I still treasure my shotgun-
