Firefighters are battling a vegetation fire that broke out in the Santiago Canyon area near Irvine Monday morning as the region was seeing strong winds.

The blaze was reported just after 6:45 a.m. and has already burned 10 acres in the area of Santiago Canyon and Silverado Canyon roads, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

Crews have launched an aggressive fight against the flames as winds are causing them to move with a "moderate rate of spread," officials said.

No structures are believed to be threatened and no evacuations have been ordered.

DEVELOPING: This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Windy as all heck here... Back yard and pond are covered in leaves and a little bit of ash. I could see it swirling in the air when I took the dogs out this morning.

Could just be the wind whipping up the existing ash.

Right on, probably related. As I was driving back from dropping my son off in Covina the fog layer over Monrovia looked brown... Must be the wind mixing the ash into that marine layer.

Sh!t...

From KTLA:

The Orange County Fire Authority has announced a mandatory evacuation order for the Orchard Hills community on Irvine Boulevard from Bake Parkway to Jamboree Road.

Officials have closed the 241 Freeway from Santiago Canyon Road to the 133 Freeway.

“Structures are threatened,” OCFA said just before 9 a.m.

OCFA estimates about 50,000 residents are currently affected.

This isn't as bad as it gets here. We get over 101 mph here! :D

I'll see that and raise you another 30 or 40 mph of sustained winds, not gusts. Plus 24 inches of rain in 24 hours. :p

#HurricaneCharley (followed shortly thereafter by Hurricane Frances and Hurricane Jeanne)

In that case, I'll have to fold my hand. :(

However, a bit of local weather experience... The strongest sustained, yes, sustained winds I have ever seen experienced in the Crescenta Valley were 90mph. I was working in a retail shop at that time. The wind was out of the North blowing over the top of the San Gabes and down into the Valley. The windows in the front of the stop took the force head on. They were bowing in at 4". We would take turns unlocking the front door and going outside to see if we could stand in that wind without losing our footing. None of us could for more than a few seconds. It was scary!

Sorry about the derail. Carry on fire reporters...
