Ok, I'll add my $0.02. I love cornering. Like carving fresh groomers on a snowboard it's one of my next favorite sensations. I digress. So a few weeks back I had the opportunity to ride Skyline and some other trail on the south side of Big Bear Lake. I was having trouble cornering on flat or off camber turns. I was entering the turns confidently, but then at the apex I was headed too wide or I had too much speed for that particular line thus I was being sent wide and I was grabbing brake instead of railing out of the exit. I've been fighting this for a long time, so that evening I was hanging out with my MTB mentor and discussing this issue. I was asked how my bike lean angle felt (amongst several other questions) and that's when the light bulb went off. I've had a few rides to focus on counter steering entering turns and then leaning my bike into the turns and I've had an epiphany!!! I realize this is likely rudimentary for most here, but in case someone else is having the same issue, perhaps this will help them sooner rather than later (as in my case). Cornering on flat turns is now fun again!

In response to three people who have said the tips in this thread are too complicated to follow, I hear you. A person can only try one or two things at a time. I will stick with my first post in this thread:

Keep your chest low, eyes up and lead with your chin....

I didn't mention it in my race thread, but I actually thought of this exact quote of yours when I was headed into the top of the rock garden at Rock-It Sunday for the race. I think it's partly while I crashed back in the Enduro is I was too high up, and as I was entering I thought about your statement above.

Glad it seemed to work - so far. Remember the disclaimer however:
It might be wise not to be too far forward while hitting the foot-deep holes at mach schnell on Rock-It. Chest low, eyes up, elbows bent yes, but maybe your chin shouldn't be over your bars at that point, lest you follow. Straightlining downhill over chunk is a little different than cornering! But the turns above and below the rock garden - yeah buddy!!!

It was actually less about the specifics of it, and more about the witty mantra that helped me focus to get into the right position. I still don't understand the driving the hand forward/counter steering bit talked about in the thread, but having that succinct statement was a tool I used to focus and put my body in the right position for the upcoming terrain. Because ya... chin over the bars on Rock-It seems like a bad call :)

Re-read the last post on the previous page - unless you too are a Chinese spammer. If you are legit - welcome to IMTB!
Why you guys so suspicious of new members?? Maybe that's my problem: I always give the benefit of the doubt...first. ;)
:cry:I have the same question. I am just lacking of bike expertise .Take it easy plz.

Pardon the rude greeting - it's not typical here. As you can read, several of the last few people who joined were simply spamming products!

Where do you ride? What kind of trails do you like? DH shredder? Mountain goat climber? Newbie just getting started? Roadie?

Regarding the level crank vs. outside foot down in the corners, I have seen many fast-mofo's that will enter the corner with the outside foot back, and slightly lower than level, and then kick down hard (but not quite all the way perpendicular to the ground) right at the apex of the corner. This is not really for cruising through it, more for when you're really thrashing. Funny how technique can change depending on speed.

A good friend of mine (that used to make parts for the Smokin Joe's road race bikes and hung out now and then with Miguel DuHamel) told me that when dropping the inside knee when cornering a sport bike (motorcycle), it was better to keep your knee up until you needed it, and then drop it. If you drop it right away, you have nothing to use when you come to the part when you really need it. I found this to work very well when I used to ride the street. Of course the really fast racers need it earlier than guys like me because they are on the ragged edge.

I think this is similar to kicking down with the outside foot as I described in the first paragraph in that they don't do it right as they enter the corner, rather that they save it for setting themselves up for exiting the corner.

Thanks!

This is a great thread, my cornering abilities or lack there of, needs to improve and there are some great tips on here. I will attempt to try to them. We have a great ride spot called Toads that would be perfect for this. Thanks for the info.
