Strava question?

As I mentioned in another thread, STRAVA told me "Congrats! You just logged your biggest climb (1598')."

Well I don't like climbing as much as others do, so I have no idea what this statistic means. I have done rides on STRAVA with over 4000 total feet of climbing. And I'm reasonably sure I've done at least one ride with more than 1598' of sustained climbing (Maple Springs if not Wrightwood). My run up STT yesterday was mostly all climbing for about 2000' but there were some DHs breaking up the climbing. I can't think of any segment yesterday that had 1598' of climbing with no DH breaking it up.

So can anyone explain this stat to me and how it is derived?
Could be because of the new year, it gets reset. Now are you ready for that 4000ft climb once again;)

Strava shows my biggest all-time climb as 4,538'. I climb that much on a regular basis and my biggest climbing day is over 13k'. No idea how they derive those numbers. Maybe sustained?

Google says biggest sustained climb.

Interesting. This is probably the first time I've climbed past the Luge while using STRAVA, but I am certain I only climbed another 1000' max, since my total ride was 2050'. And the climb above the Luge is punctuated by a short, but pronounced downhill of about 30 seconds and probably -150'.

I don't know. I don't really care, but I am just very curious. Throw a number out there like that and I want to know from where to where?

It's the difference between the lowest and highest point on the ride.

Ah ha!!!! Ding ding ding - we have a winner. Thank you. That makes sense.

But wait - Silverado to Joplin has to be more than that, right? Maybe my free STRAVA didn't remember that ride, or Wrightwood.

Kind of a sad statistic compared to many of you climbing beasts (including those that used to post here regularly), but at least I now understand the metric.

Thanks Scissors!

As far as I know it is based on the biggest climbing segment, which is pretty dumb.

I did a ride from my home at 600' elevation to Onyx Summit at 8000', and I got told my biggest climb was like 4000', because that was the longest segment I did in that ride
