Strava haters rejoice!

I only hate STRAVA because of those a-holes back in the early days who would yell out "STRAVA!!!" as they blasted by, in pursuit of a KOM, while fully expecting anyone in their approach pattern to GTFOOTW, right-of-way be damned.
I remember we had a topic here about that.. some thought it was a myth.. that someone would actually yell out Strava as they went by u on downhill...

I'll continue to be a subscriber....it is my ride history. My days of chasing PR's is pretty much over....let alone KOM's. I do like to see how I stack up against my ride peeps.

I use the route builder....a lot.

I like seeing were my peeps are riding.

The mtn bike Stravaholes are pretty much a thing of the past.

Well at least I have choices like hammer like a mofo, pay em or just be happy with what they give me for nuthin. My pr's and top 10's and all that are what they are and are few and far between these days as I'm not getting any younger and injuries and puking sucks. Till now I never really saw a reason to pay for the service, now I'll think about it. I'd be a liar though if I said I didn't like the social aspect and looking at how I stack up against others. I ride with some freaking legends and if I can stay in the same zip code it makes me feel good. I've used several free apps over the years and liked them all for different reasons. For a time I was trying to keep them all in sync by downloading gpx files and uploading to the other sites. The variation in mileage and elevation amazed me. For route planning I gotta say ride with GPS kicks all kinds of ass for it's free version...

Inanimate objects can be powerful motivators and enablers for behavior.... What do you think your bike is?
Here we go!:inlove:
So you are telling me that I’m not smarter than STRAVA, or my bike? That I allow STRAVA to control me so much I have no self control, Mr. Broken Ribs, Fractured Clavicle, and plated Collarbone? It didn’t take STRAVA for you to push your limit, and your luck. You did that on your own, or do you privatize your STRAVA posts or hmmmm, maybe use “another” App to track your success?

Don’t make me kick a man when he’s down, a handsome one at that! :sneaky:

Oh man, that was a punch in the jewels if ever I saw one. :Roflmao

I wonder what Herz' comeback will be?

When he said “powerful motivators”, he wasn’t really speaking of one individual’s behavior. He was speaking collectively.

Over a larger dataset than just Mikie Watson, there will be those who are affected by the inanimate Strava.

Geez... Some of this same logic could go in the Corona thread... :whistling:

Good observation! It's getting a bit toasty in here. Not unlike it has done a few times in the Corona thread.

...and thus why we all get to have opinions. :inlove: I am not of the mindset to have others control me, or take away things because others can not control themselves. This subject can apply to a lot of subjects we try not to talk about here.

I am trying to be funny here...
but in a deeper discussion I’m as serious as a heart attack about freedom of choice. :)

Edit: Besides, the Darwin effect helps thin the crowd, through natural selection...

My bike made me do it... It's an inanimate object. It was the catalyst, the temptress and the fuel for my foolishness. If I had been riding a DV9, I would have been safe. :cautious:

So THAT"S why all you old farts have been buying hardtails!

Couldn’t we just both agree we like to ride bikes, ride them fast, and challenge ourselves, and that the sport we both chose has consequences when we make mistakes? STRAVA and other Apps like it simply measure the limits we choose to push?
That just seems reasonable to me...

(and you’re still handsome!)

I find Strava a little better for following unofficial trails in their route builder compared to Ride w/ GPS. A lot of times you can throw a route together really fast in it. I do like that Ride uses Google and you can drop into streetview easily. Strava map options suck IMHO. They should license from Google.

I mentioned in my crash description that Strava made me crash and I was only half joking. I’m pretty competitive by nature so I might have been pushing on that downhill anyways but setting a new PR was definitely on my mind that day.

Having said that, I’ll probably pay for it. Being relatively new to the sport, it’s motivating to see my times improve on my regular routes and tracking my ride history is pretty cool.

I started Strava less than 2 years ago and have been riding for 13 years. Strava is a major component of my experience now and 100% makes me charge harder on the bike. However, other riders also make me chase. If you say other riders don’t have an effect on your output, I don’t believe you. Like a dog off a leash, i’m all over the rider in front of me unless he/she can shred or we’re climbing. Even then I make sure to talk Sh!t as I’m getting passed...because screw you with your 3-day per week rides and your carbon fiber and your Strava subscription and your superior abilities. I’m not giving up without a fight a-hole!

What time should I pick you up?

Sounds like you're ready to throw some blows, piss fire, and sh!t grenades.

In that frothed Wolfe madness there was a lot of logic. So we should blame those we ride with just as much as we blame STRAVA. So instead of blaming STRAVA I can blame the people I’m riding with because they pushed me past my talent chasing them!

Curse you fast mountain bikers, curse you Wolfie Chicken Nugget of a Wisdom!

No. I blame STRAVA for almost everything, except when I blame the media.

And thanks. You're quite the dish yourself! :D

(PS - It's been a loooong time since I saw or heard behavior like "STRAVA coming through..." God I miss the days of frothing Stravassholes!)

I like looking at my friends times and try to better mine. I don't race but I like to challenge myself with it. My form of "racing". Not sure if I'll subscribe but I'm leaning towards it. Like it says on their info update, "it's like buying 2 bars a month."

Strava doesn't hurt people, people hurt people

I am pretty good at estimating especially climbs. I try to be within 10%. That being said I don't Strava, and I should be ashamed. If my ride was not recorded on Strava did I even really ride?
Happy high tech trails ridden by a low tech dude

Strava have tons of features and I only use the ones I choose to use.
I don't have a single KOM (as far as I know), but I like to be able to compare my times with selected groups.
There are a few segments that I'm in the top 5%, but I know that I'm an overall average rider on a good day.
On the downhills I try to be faster them most of my followers and other group of user (such as the Imtbtrail Strava club members).
On the ups I compare myself to my weight group (always looking for some positive reinforcements).

My main use of Strava is for motivation.
Watching the other riders that I follow ride more them me get me motivated to ride (even when my sore fat body say chill).
At the end of the day it is an App. What you do with it is up to you.
