Riders Without helmets

Funny how things change over time. Thinking back to the late 70s and ealry 80s. I grew up riding a BMX bike and skateboards. Never wore a helmet or was asked to. Well, not until I raced BMX or skated big vert half-pipe anyhow. But all those years riding down steep pavement hills or jumping over garbage cans or cars on rickety plywood ramps. Never had any head injury. And no one I knew did either. I guess I was just lucky? I think most everyone went without helmets back then. I wonder, are the statistics better now that we enforce it so much? Of course now I would never let my kid go without when she starts riding. And the only time I go without a helmet now is if I am on a cruiser bike like others said.

Funny what gets me are the guys that go without gloves. Is that macho? I am way more likely to get raw hands than a head trauma when I crash

True, never had a helmet as a kid. Rode the Schwinn Varsity all over dirt roads, the skate board all over, at night too.
Ate Sh*t on the Skateboard coming down Mt Baldy rd after riding the tube under the Dam.
That was one painful slide on pavement! Not much road rash due to heavy clothes and jacket for protection, but Damn...could barley move for a couple days. WTF was I thinking! Of course, teenagers are fearless....or dumb....or both. o_O

Some interesting reading from the bicycle helmet safety institute (BHSI):

Cliff Notes version: Expensive helmets don't necessarily give you more protection than inexpensive helmets. . . . .

What you do get with the more expensive helmets are: better ventilation, lighter weight, more sophisticated retention systems.
I was shopping for a new helmet. What about MIPS? is it worth paying more for a MIPS helmet??

My assumption is that a MIPS helmet mitigates concussion-induced impacts, even incrementally. I have had multiple concussions, and MIPS would have mitigated some of them. I'd buy MIPS if I were you. The cost of a single neurological appointment offsets the extra charge for a MIPS helmet....and cumulative costs from brain damage are way more expensive than MIPS. "Buy nice or pay twice!"
