Please keep an eye out, my Specialized Stumpy Evo LTD was stolen.

I know exactly where that is,
If you go to the Costco in Azusa, leave from the main entrance and go straight through the lights until you reach a T intersection (just past where the lagunitas brewery was supposed to be), theres a trail/walkway in there that connects to the main san gabriel river bikeway. Tons of camps in the brush along the san gabriel river there though.. all te way from the Canyon mouth down into the Santa Fe Damn area. I "Think" they cleared out the camps on the staging area near the entrance to the trail.. or were supposed to have cleared out a lot north of the 210 last year.. but they may have popped back up.

Your best bet is to park at Encanto Park in Duarte.. cross the bridge and ride south to the Santa Fe Damn. Lots of encampments scattered throughout the brush there.. and always unhoused folks wandering back and forth on the bikeway (so much that I stopped going there with my family despite it being a great ride).

Area in the circle is where the bike was sighted

Perfect thanks! I'm going to start there. I'll probably just park and walk around that area. I looked on a map and the Azusa PD is like 2 blocks away. If I can confirm, I'll most likely call and see what they say. If they blow me off, then I'll wing it at that point.

I've only gone north as far as the Santa Fe Dam area. I can say that the homeless camps were fairly numerous from where I started at around the 60 fwy but it's been a few years since I last rode it. I always was a bit anxious passing by solo riding looking to be ambushed. It will take some balls to confront some douche if you see your bike out there in no man's land.

I'd most likely go on foot. No point in bringing another bike. Ideally I'll bring someone with me, but not sure yet on a Friday during the day. The rest I'll figure out when the time comes.

Sounds promising. Got off the phone with the OP from the mtbr post and he loves right there. He’s going to meet up with me Friday and show me basically the area where he saw the bike and other areas might be. So I’ll scope it myself. Sounds like Azusa PD, from what he says, has no issues going in to recover property that’s identified with proof. So still no guarantees but hoping for the best.

Be very careful. My buddy (OC deputy) was assigned to deal with the homeless full time for over a year a few months after California passed a law that released a bunch of “non-violent”. He said they were mostly armed with knives, drugs and EBT cards. Many resisted arrest. Many arrested for threatening workers running motel lobbies.

they have nothing to lose. If you can’t bring someone, I’d bring some nun chucks or a bow staff. What’s Chuck Norris doing these days?

This ^^^ City park rangers I deal with manage an area along the San Diego river that has persistent homeless camps. There have been enough murders there, rangers are not allowed to go in without a police escort. Among the homeless, some are harmless, many have mental illness and can behave erratically, and many are third-strikers who have nothing to lose if confronted. You never know which you'll encounter, although looking for a bike thief there is a better chance he'll be the third type.

It was very uneventful, but worth the time I think. Just to re-iterate, this was off the link that someone posted to MTBR. I was able to make contact with the dude Jeff, who is a local out there. We talked a bit. He saw the same dude on the same bike (black carbon Specialized), but there's no 100% confirmation that it's mine. I took my BiL with me and we met Jeff and walked around and he showed me the area where he saw the dude on a black Specialized. He sounds pretty connected out there and let a bunch of the local shops know. I also stopped by Azusa PD (like a block away) and the lady at the counter was very nice. I e-mailed her a pic and she wrote a bunch of info on it, including the serial and was going to hand it out to the patrol guys and she said it would be helpful to give them PC to stop anyone on a bike matching the description. I still need to call Fullerton PD and add the serial number to the call. She made it sound like all the local departments share serials if they pick up a suspicious bike and will basically check it with other departments to see of there's any reports that match.

At this point, there's not much else to do. I'm definitely going to stay vigilant on the ad sites and see if anything pops. Otherwise, it's a hard lesson learned. FWIW to anyone else, I went over my insurance with my buddy (State Farm). My deductible is 1/2% of the housing structure so roughly $2500. Not really worth filing a claim for that. I'd lose my discount and pay the deductible to get the money. I'm sure I'd eventually end up paying for it. A friend of mine has a S4 Enduro frame he's going to sell me for a good price and I'll most likely just build that up. Obviously, I'd love to get my bike back, but not going to hold my breath.

I could easily pick it out. Even though it's all black, it's still relatively unique. I've seen several of them for sale and there's plenty different to set them apart. The easiest identifier so far I think is it just being a XL. The lady at Azusa said a few of the officers ride, so if it is my bike, hopefully they can track that dude down.
