Over The Hump

One day until the first OTH race of 2015... Who's in?

I'll be getting my ass handed to me in Sport 3.

I'll be "racing" Clydesdale.

I raced twice last year, and I love the fact that by the time the Clydes finish there is nobody at the finish line (we start just before the beginners who have a shorter race).

I've never done it, but my neighbor has tried to talk me into it a couple times... Maybe this will be the year.

I've never raced... Does every newb start at beginner, and get adjusted from there? I'd probably qualify for the Clyde class...

I'd like to do this once or twice, but it's at a horrible day/time. A 6pm start time with all the prep and commute beforehand just doesn't work for me. I work 8-6 most days, and it's a 40min commute there. So, no, I doubt I'll ever make this series.

Every newb starts beginner, and they try to keep it truly beginner racers. And if you're really fast in one of the first few beginner races (even if its your first race), you get kicked up a category.

You could also start in the Clyde...generally if you're fast enough to turn laps with the Sport class winners, the organizer will kick you out of the Clyde so you can race with people you're own speed. Some people hate it when they get kicked up a category, but its an effort to keep the beginners truly beginners...like if you raced beginner last year, you shouldn't be in beginner this year.

Give it a shot, its a good taste of what racing can be like, good and bad. You might get bit by the bug.

Clyde is actually a tough class... A lot of people who meet the letter of the rule, if not the spirit. I'm a Clyde as well, but hoping to not be one by halfway through the season, so I'm entered in Sport.

Last year there was a "True Beginner" category for first-timers. No awards, but no pressure either. Beginner, though, is pretty laid back (except maybe in the top 10), and you will find someone to race with somewhere in the field.

I'll be getting after it in SuperSport... cross your fingers for me! Good luck to everyone. Come by the PureRide ez up and say hello.

Ready!

WALFAT, E.T., and I are racing. And by "racing" I mean: walking the hills, stopping for a chat and a push from Dino, spewing menacing curses (out of love of course) at Shitty if I see him, offering sips of Makers Mark to those who look like they need it, and in general heckling the crap out of everyone I can.

It's so good to hear those names again! Thanks for posting. I think Shitty and Dino stayed at STR.

Well neither one of them showed up at OTH :o, much to my dismay  I really could have used a little Dino cowbell going up the hill by his usual haunting ground. Great turnout as usual. I loved the new course splits between beginner and sport/expert. I thought it was very well thought-out to challenge everyone and give those faster riders their own path to go duke out riding order on the more narrow stuff before the two courses met back up again. I thought the vibe was a tad more on the serious side versus years past, but maybe I'm bringing my own prejudices to the table about how the crowd seems to be evolving ;)

I thought I was going to die, as usual on the WALFAT, but E.T. and I trudged on and like every other race I've done I felt stronger as the race progressed. I only heard of one injury (sadly during the kids race) but the rider assured my EMT friend he'd be back in two weeks. I hope he gets back on that horse sooner than later. Poor little guy was pretty shaken up from what my buddy said.

Great job out there everyone.

I spotted the Walfat sitting over by The Path's tent and picked it up... I admire your fortitude!

I could have used some Dino cowbell on the top of the climb myself. First race in Sport, and that little hill on the third lap is when my quads started screaming, "Enough!"

When will somebody bring a scale and start weighing some of skinny guys in the Clydesdale division.... Some of them are not 200lbs.!
Fat guys like myself shouldn't be chasing riders who average lap time is under 20 minutes.

My only real issue with the event yesterday was the groups order at the start.
The Clydes started after the Junior boys, and be the time we got to the first climb too many of the boys where walking up the hill. Unfortunately, some of the buys don't have their left vs.right figured out yet.

The only other "issue" was getting in and out of the venue. I'm sure things will improve in the next few weeks.

Other then that, I had a great time :-)

Hope you schooled those Sport class sandbaggers, Shawn!

If I were in Sport class, I would have done ok... Going against XC dudes in SuperSport is a tall order. I goofed up and actually started in the sport group, if i minus that time, I ended up around 15th. If I can get myself into the top ten by seasons end, I'll consider that a pretty successful season, for an AM rider.

So did anyone else get sick after eating Wahoos at last weeks race?

I've been sick since last Wednesday morning with the most vile case of food poisoning I've ever experienced. I just didn't feel right all day on Wednesday and it got progressively worse throughout the day, then started to get sick on wednesday night (vomit, etc). I spent most of Thursday night, Friday and Saturday on the toilet. Its almost 1 week later and today is the first day my appetite has returned.

It looks like I'm sitting out tomorrow night so I can continue to get better.

I had a BRC last week, and a steak taco last night. No issues for me.........except getting my arse handed to me by the sport women. I am happy the class is growing. Seems like the field is about double the size from last year, and just as (if not more) speedy.

Re: OTH Cancelled for 7/21

OTH has sent out word that tomorrow's race (July 21) is cancelled due to the muddy conditions.

Small price to pay for some much-needed rain.

I'm signed up for the race tomorrow. Will be my second race ever. First one was the Whiting TT earlier this year. Should be fun. Look for the slow guy in the 45-49 beginner class and that will be me! :D

Good luck! More importantly, just have fun. I've heard the environment surrounding the OTH races is really fun.

^ exactly. Last couple years I was able to sneak out of work early but this year I'm just too damn busy.

I did a few races last year and races 1&2 this year (beginner 34). I usually finish in the upper middle of the pack which is fine with me being ~205lbs. I hurt my back in June and haven't been riding enough to get back out there just yet. I'm hoping to do the last 4 races though. It is a good time and my wife likes to go and watch (and always gets me a beer for when I finish :D ).
