Music... I Listened to Some

Just got reminded of Barry McGuire's "Eve of Destruction." Powerful.

I'm not going to link it. If you can remember it, or you're wondering why it's important, go look it up. It's everywhere on the YouTubes.

When will we ever learn?

Yeah, my blood's so mad, feels like coagulatin'
I'm sittin' here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

Saw these guys last night, Social D was the co-headliner. Ears are still ringing this morning.

I love Roomful of Blues! How about Rob Piazza and the Mighty Flyers?

Right on! Gotta admit that I'm not familiar with Rod Piazza. I'll have to check 'em out. I moved from the northeast to SoCal in the late 80s. Got very immersed in the whole country/cowpunk scene based around Bakersfield and North Hollywood. Spent many nights at the Palomino Club sharing a table with the likes of Rosie Flores and Dale Watson. I think they both ended up on the Austin scene in more recent years. I actually saw Dale Watson play at the Continental Club in Austin a couple years ago. Late 80s/early 90s was a fun period of time in SoCal for music. Exene, John and company, as well as the Alvin brothers were always hanging around where good music was happening. Dave and Phil even played in West LA fairly regularly, particularly at the Liquid Kitty. Saw some weird stuff, like DJ Bonebrake (of X) and John Densmore (of The Doors) playing a really cool set at the Iguana bookstore in North Hollywood back around 1991. I even remember seeing Merle Haggard shopping for groceries at the North Hollywood Ralphs back in the day, and he was wearing a Merle Haggard concert tour tee-shirt of all things. Sorry for the rambling. Roomful of Blues struck some old memories from that period of time, and I figure some folks reading this thread might relate to my experiences.

I think we've both been deep into the music scene and like a lot of the same stuff! I started playing piano at the tender age of 5. Singing in a Baptist choir when my voice changed. Big band trumpet as a young teen. Deadhead, blues, country, rock - love it. Listening to the Skynyrd right now. Lucky to see them in their prime. Mr. Breeze... Now a little Louie Prima - That Old Black Magic.

Memory bubbles..

the Palomino in the early 70's, Asleep at the Wheel, Ray Benson dancing across table tops, jamming...

the Starwood again early 70's, no clue who I saw, Joe Cocker came down from upstairs, killed "feeling all right", lead off full James Brown dying with cape over him to get him upstairs.. frick me.

Garcia and the Dead at the Santa Monica Civic, he's so wasted, barely upright, worst show ever.

Beach Boys, Greek theater, Dennis so effing wasted, kicked his drum set into Mike Love's back. Danced on top of Brian's piano while he was soloing My Room, dragged off in a head lock by security. Died soon after.

So many shows, so many memories.

Indeed! Cool to hear about your personal well-rounded musician background. When I first started taking music lessons at around 10 years old, it was at this studio that started every kid off on a basic accordion. Actually made a lot of sense. Very simple instrument to learn to play while learning to read music. After accomplishing some basics, every student then moved on to their instrument of choice, mine being guitar. One-on-One lessons during the week, and then a band practice session on Saturdays. I can play basic piano, but guitar has always remained my favorite instrument. I have lots of guitar heroes, and they're all over the map. For example: Richard Lloyd, SRV, Marc Ribot, J Mascis, Richard Thompson, Larry Carlton, Jeff (Skunk) Baxter, Steve Lukather, and so on, and so on. Too many to mention.

Some very deep memories there! Thanks for sharing.
