@SnakeCharmer made me aware of this a little bit ago. Stay safe out there. Things can change in an instant.

@Faust29 Did I ride that? I don't remember.

This really sucks. None of us should die playing with our child's toys. So horrible for the family and loved ones. Please, ye macho men of the San Gabs - PLEASE don't do this. Machismo is stupid.

Yes… After the chunky part of Sunset ends, there is a smooth double track back to the Mount Lowe pavement. The drop is vertical and far.

The spot in the picture above is the only narrow section. It’s probably a foot or less at its narrowest as you pass the rock.

Not sure if that was the spot…

:(

@Faust29 I imagine I put a foot down out of "an abundance of caution."

This sucks with the major suckitude of all suckness. :(

The spot starts around 10:15 in the video... :( This was when I first started riding through it... It's actually in a little better condition now than when this was filmed. This was a solo ride... The two riders in front of me were a couple kids out training.

Man, that is an a** pucker section. Definitely need some skills to get through that. I feel for the family, thinking he is just going for a ride and now he will never come home to his family.

Man, super heavy to read about this. I can see how one could let their guard down after getting to this relatively easy section after having just come through some comparatively gnarly stuff. I know I always lower my dropper an inch or two when pedaling through this section to get my center of gravity low, and to make it easy to quickly get a stable foot down if the need arises. I never really think of MTB (at least the way I do it) as dangerous. Injuries? Sure. But the idea of losing my life just never enters my mind. Sobering to read about a death on a trail I ride with at least some degree of frequency.

Oh, the guy that was charged for cutting a Mtb'er with a saw.
I thought he was dead? Oh but to dream....

He's been spouting his drivel since I started on this in 1998 ish. That was a Microsoft news group, had Pete fagerlin in it to give a sense of how long he's held a grudge. LOL.karma bro, karma will get him.

Haha..I got into a posting spar match with him once.

That scumbag MV from the Bay area felt the need to post his idiotic opinions on the Sheriff's Tweet. That guy has serious mental issues.
Oh man @Faust29 , you just have me my evenings entertainment....

Went to Twitter and found the tweet, eventually finding the link to his manifesto...

That's some scholarly Conservation Biology studies by the Psychology PhD.....
I've seen better arguments (actually backed by facts or at they very least objective opinions) from high schoolers. I wonder why his masterpiece hasn't been peer reviewed.... Hmmm

Not finding many followers on Twitter either...

Any story that could conceivably make a mountain biker look bad has been the target of his comments for decades. He's nuts. As Dan says above, he's been spouting off since the newsgroup days.

For extra fun, look for the write-ups on his court case!

I believe he's a former mathematics professor from Berkeley...

For the life of me, I can't visualize that section of Sunset Ridge. It's probably my favorite trail up there too. The video makes it looks pretty sketchy but I just can't recall being concerned on that trail. There's definitely a few corners on Mt Lowe East that have some pucker factor. Every time I take a Mount Wilson virgin up there, I remind them to ride at their own comfort level and don't worry about others getting too far ahead. We've had two people go over the side on our rides but never in the sketchiest of places thankfully.

This is the smooth wide hiker section after the last techy switchbacks and staircase... I've actually ridden my gravel bike on this part with no issues- from the Mount Lowe Road to the bottom of the staircase.

And it's in a lot better shape now than when this was filmed summer 2020.
