OK so this is the ride report for today. It's not pretty.
We did not have such a smooth day on the ride today. As we were nearing the top of the lower sam merrill climb, Ross stopped to let some hikers by. He lost his balance and fell off the trail to his left. He landed about 18 feet down, but as he fell, he hit a rock on his side.
I was probably about one minute behind, so as I approached one of the hikers came up to me and said with a heavy accent "You have to rescue your friend". I looked at him in disbelief, but then I looked down and saw Ross trying to make his way back up to the trail. I scrambled down and he handed me his bike. He climbed back up the trail and we made sure he was ok, no broken bones but he felt that maybe he had bruised a rib. Ross then decided he would ride back down and told me he would text me the moment he reached the bottom.
Apparently about 1/2 mile down the trail he started to experience excruciating pain and difficulty breathing. Ross said a couple of hikers came to his aid and one happened to be a doctor. So i'm guessing he is the one that made the 911 call that initiated the air rescue...
Ross was airlifted to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. I was able to see him in the ER. He has a collapsed left lung so he has a tube inserted in the left side of his body. Nothing broken but he has some difficulty breathing and that causes great discomfort and pain.
