Is it me? (questions about rims)

I run about 22 psi rear, 20 front on 2.35" exo TR Maxxis Minions. 27.5. 160 mm travel front and rear.

Where are you finding 2.35 Minions in 27.5? I literally just put a new DHF on today, and tried hard to find either the DHF or DHR II in 2.35 without success. Settled for the 2.3 and it looks really skinny compared to the 2.35 e*thirteen it replaced.

How did you like the e13’s? I can get them on the cheap, but I’m afraid to try. Afraid they won’t match up to aggressor rear high roller front combo I’m more than happy with. What say you?

I like them for the most part. They are super grippy, but they are downhill tires and thus very heavy. My bike came with TRS Race front and rear. I switched the rear to TRS Plus and have gone through three rear tires in 18 months ... they wear out pretty fast.

Other than tread, they are super durable though. I just replaced the front for the first time in 18 months and never had a flat in all that time despite having a tube in it.

If all you ride is gnarly downhill, I would recommend them since I think it is virtually impossible to tear a sidewall, but they are just too much for me given the weight penalty and how fast the center tread wears out on the rear.

You can!! But it will be heavier than sin. :whistling:
Yep. Or costly as F. Light, strong and cheap – pick two?

Pat, for an alloy rim, I like the profile of Stan’s Mk 3 series. The rim profile is pretty low, and that might contribute to it not getting the impacts as much as others. ? My Arch set is, pretty sure, near perfect, although I don’t habitually plow with them.

I didn’t reco them straight away because I don’t want you to prove that reco unworthy.:cool: I don’t have to even think about what a Derby will do. My first set is on its second bike, totally nicked up, straight and ding free. Lifetime warranty just in case. Not outrageously priced if spec’ed with a DT 350 or similar bomber but reasonable hub.

Lots of good advice here...to breaking stuff less often!

My bad. I meant 2.30. They used to be called 2.35 and they measured about 2.15 at best. The 2.30 measure about 2.25, so they are actually wider than my former 2.35 26" versions. Like you, I would prefer a 2.40 for the front.

Wasn't Gwin still on 26" EX471 in 2014? Maybe bigS changed to B that year, I forget. Generally, for the given weight, the smaller hoops are more stronger, all things being equal, which they never are, so novermind.

So @redwoods, get some 29s that weigh a bunch and ride lighter man :) Seriously tho, a little heavier duty rim would probably solve your prob and let you lower the pressure esp if you're running procore. Kinda what most of the others said already... good luck

That was pretty impressive. While that rim didn't blow up, it was NOT ok after that! But maybe with my ridiculously high air pressure ( :D ) and the foam insert it would stand a much better chance attached to this knuckle-dragger's bike.
Whether the rim was ridable after going through the rocks, roots, drops and jumps of a World Cup race course without a tire isn't exactly the point. The point is it was strong enough to survive that, so a version of that rim under you with a tire on it should hold up just fine - even at normal air pressures in the low 20s and without being dainty in your speed or line selection.
