I Rode My Bike Today...

@buggravy reached out the other day about riding the newly reopened section of Backbone Trail: Kanan to Corral Cyn. We had talked about riding it when it reopened the last time we rode another section of the trail system. So this morning, fairly early, we met up at the T-1 parking lot. I arrived a bit early so I dropped in a short way on the West side of Kanan Road for a little warm up. Right away, I knew it was gonna be tough for me today. My legs were super tight. But I was very much so looking forward to hitting what I think is the best three sections of the trail system.

The ride heading East is taxing right from the start with a baby monster climb to get up and over Kanan Road. From there on it was becoming clear that the ride I used to know well had changed, mostly due to the loss of dense brush and oak trees, thanks the fire. The trail itself was loose, clearly just reopened. It needs a bit of light rain and lots of foot and bike well traffic to wear it in again. And, it will happen, I'm sure.

It's Moon Dust season on the Backbone trail so be prepared to get dirty, especially if you are behind another rider. I led much of the way and Matt wisely stay back in an effort to allow the fine dust to settle. But on the way back, we had a bit of a cluster fvck with the other riders so I was in the middle of that and I "got dusted" fairly well.

We made it to Latigo Canyon Road before the heat set in but we could feel it coming. So we took a quick breather and then carried on. The baby monster climb on this section before the saddle, heading East was totally doable. There has been an almost complete trail reroute along side of the old one on this climb so you are not in the wash-out for the upper portion. That was nice to see and long overdue, IMO. We both cleaned that climb and then carried on to the saddle.

The drop down from the saddle heading East is also loose. Much of the sandstone/slickrock stuff has a layer of dust on it which made the descent a little treacherous. The area through the creek bed at the bottom of that was fun though. It's roughed up quite a bit from the rainy season. The rock garden sections and creek bed crossings are a bit more raw now. The ride from there to the Corral Canyon parking lot is mainly unchanged.

We rested up for a bit after we arrived. That's when the other groups of riders started arriving. We also saw a few more hikers, one of them an 83 year old gal. That was cool to see.

When I got back on my bike to start heading back, I was all stiffened up. The ride back was tough and it usually is because this is a demanding ride but it's a really good one.

I have not uploaded the Garmin yet but I believe that it said something like 12.7 miles, 2346', and over 1000 calories.

Did you have one of those lovely dirt unibrows at the end of the ride?

Back from Portland, and got in a quick Harding out and back this morning. Almost broke a world record for no traffic - didn't see anyone heading up, and didn't see anyone heading down until the picnic bench at mile 1.5. Two hikers. Then one biker just heading up, and that was it - three trail users on the trail other than myself.

Mountains are definitely dry, tumble weeds are getting ready to tumble. Not too early start at 6:30 and the canyon was 58. When I got back to my car, about 9:00 it was 80 :( There has been heavy vehicle traffic on Harding in the last few weeks, so Harding is back to being a truck trail. It is still in pretty good shape though - no loose sections to speak of and the trucks just kinda crunched down the encroaching weeds without leaving the trail and doing anything more dramatic. Oh... and the flies are out in force, even early in the morning. 18.4 miles, 3400 feet.

Today was my first ride on my new pedals and shoes. I recently picked up a pair of flat pedals and five ten freerider shoes. Figured the good ol Loop would be a good place to try out the new combo (lots of shade). Was on the bike by 7:30 and had a great ride. I cleaned every climb (the steeper ones concerned me initially) to my surprise. I say surprise because I wasn’t sure just how fast I would adapt to the flats after riding clipless for years. There was a decent amount of riders out today and the weather was great. Was warming up when I got back to the Courthouse a little before 9:00. I always just cruise when I ride but was surprised to see on Strava thatI had bettered by “best” time by about 7 minutes. Weeeird.

Nothing out of the ordinary out there today, and no pix.

Got out to Laguna yesterday for some fun wandering around LCWP/ElMoro. Cool with lots of peeps at the start, then hot & desolation at the end. Came up on a high school cross country team on the first half of Lizards. Talk about buzz kill. Dabbed a few spots on stagecoach that I normally clean. PR’d the willow climb... surprise!!Went down rattlesnake for the first time in like 20 years. It was coo, no dabs, may add to the list of trails to ride when I’m out there. Rode down to the beach to check the surf for Herz, it was glassy but flat. Back up El Moro to I think I can. Down emerald falls. Climbed up Emerald and cleaned the whole thing bottom to top. First time for that, felt good. Overall my time up emerald was WAY slower than my best with having to HAB. Thought for sure it would be faster since I didn’t HAB. Back across missing link and Fenceline. And, back to the truck at ridge park. Pulled up to the back of my Tahoe. Took my gloves off and sat down on my bumper RIGHT NEXT TO MY TRUCK KEY that I sat down there at start of my ride. LOL! good thing I was in NEWPORT/LAGUNA. Anywhere else I woulda got jacked.

We rode today... After last weekend's early start and death march, we opted for a later start, and an easier ride. We rolled onto Maple Springs at 5:30, when the temps were still low 50s. It actually felt a little chilly as we rolled into the windy canyon. We were passed by two separate 4x4s before we finished the pavement. One was driving slowly, and the other thought he was on a race track... I should have seen that as foreshadowing for the ride down the mountain later on.

Literally, as we turned off the end of the pavement section, we became rolling bug magnets. I donned my net before the spring, but my partner opted to enjoy the flying breakfast buffet a little longer. :p :gag:

As the sun came up, it warmed up a little... But it never got too toasty. At 4 Corners we watched 4x4 #1 play on the little patch above Harding. Rally drivers they were not. o_O

Thankfully we had the mountain to ourselves from Four Corners all the way to the peak. The section of Main Divide below Modjeska is just starting to return to its old self in spots. For the most part, though, it's nothing like it was before the grading last summer just before the fire.

Looking down on Dove Canyon, Coto, and RSM:

We didn't hang out too long, and headed back down. There were a couple other riders in the saddle, but the real fun started back at Four Corners. We made the call to skip Motorway, and just head back to the cars. There were a couple well behaved drivers, but the majority seemed intent on killing us. I can't even guess how fast one group of 4 motos was going. Fast enough that the first rider completely dusted us out, so that we couldn't see the other three coming. We could only hear them in our white out... Kinda freaky.

Just a little dusty... As was the bike.

We made it down in one piece, but it was close a few times...

Still a fun day, but we did not have the serene experience that @BonsaiNut had just to the south. It was more like Frogger. Off the mountain and packed up by 9:10.

25 miles and 4200 feet.

Bomb Squad hits Hana Flats.
I checked the forestry websithe and it said the eagle lockout was lifted June 21st. We get to Gray's Peak trail head at the group camp site and it's still closed, threatening 5000.00 fines. On the closed sign written in black marker is July 31st. Well it's Aug. 4th! WTF! What does it take to update a website! We drove 1.25 hrs to get there and Grego and Vince around 2. We waited till 9 for the Discovery center to open to get some clarification. We got a little bit. Found out we could ride from Hana Flats to the peak and back and be legal. So freiken pissed! Oh well, the ride out to the base of Gray's was fast! Redwoods was feeling frisky and the Trail slayer is always frisky. Up to the peak we went and enjoyed the views and a bite then bombed down the peak and smoked it back to Hana Flats.
A good ride, fast and flowy with some loose corners and no tech.
Had a blast and Rocky's after.
Good times with Redwoods, Grego and the Trail slayer.
Baaaaaaaallllz baby!
Stay tuned. Watch for Vince's crazy epic coming!

Good times @Tom the Bomb and @redwoods . New dirt for me and Vince. Still had a great ride even with the little hick up. I was beat from riding yesterday and the altitude didn't help either. The trail has some nice flow. Loose in spots so don't let your guard down. Great way to beat the heat. Thanks guys!

Late morning start for Maple Springs to Santiago Peak. 5:30 roll time. Cool and breezy at the start. Once we hit the dirt, the breeze died, the temps jumped up and the bugs came out in force.

Legs took a while to warm up. We weren’t fast, but not slow. Rolling passed 4 Corners heading up to the Peak, yeah Main Divide is starting to get rough again. This was the first time I had been up here since our snow night ride when we got growled at. In the saddle I finally put my bug net on.

Quick turn around at the Peak and headed down. Back at 4 Corners, decided to just drop down Maple Springs....man this road is dangerous when the gates are open. 3 hrs up and back.

Then.....

Late afternoon spin around Whiting with Suz. Just the typical loop including Cattle pind and Mark’s Bench. Warm but not horrible.

Just about an hour.

Good day on the bike.

A couple of O'Neill spins this week... With the recent bulldozer treatment to the end of Live Oak, it's now cleanable... So I got the bright idea yesterday to ride it end to end and back. O'Neill proper to the Aliso Creek bike path and back works out to about 8 miles and 1600 feet. The numbers are deceiving, as the climbing sections are steep. Good workout... The climbing is split about evenly each way. Some extra credit in the Arroyo and Tijeras Creek.

20/2200

Today it was a double Vista DH... That climb up Live Oak never gets easy. Well, unless you're on an e-bike like the one I saw zipping effortlessly up the steepest section. :cautious:

Blackstar Tree Farm to Beeks 17.9 miles 2200 feet 1500 calories

Couldn't get an early start today, so had to do a late one at 6:30 PM. 75 degrees at the start but quickly dropped to 63. The wind was howling a bit at Beeks. Saw 9 other riders including Jeremy.

My little buddy
The youngster did not slither away

75 isn't bad, but 63 sounds like heaven.

Rolled from the house at 4:15 yesterday for a spin around the Oaks. Knew it was gonna be warm, so I took the easy bike to not over exert in the heat.

Going up Oak I just cooked. No air flow, temps about 94*, no shade. Up at Robbers Roost, strong breeze blowing and nice temps.

Down Barham Ridge, down Chutes. Decided to do anloop around IRP and Puma. Saw the tail end of a rattler at the bottom.

Temps cooled enough I headed back up Chutes. Down Cactus, up Bumblebee, down Peralta and headed home.

The park was relatively quiet.

Still a good day on the bike.

@mountaingirl sara when is the ibis rep coming back out?? I need to see if there is any option for my V2 Ripley since I broke it on my crash a couple of weeks ago. Figured maybe there might be an option in a one on one conversation instead of through email with the headquarters.
