I Rode My Bike Today...

I was joking about @Danimal since I follow him on Strava and ... yeah, that was just me being amusing.

Deal! My vote in this election won't matter so I already won. Since you generically said one of my favorite downhills and mentioned @DangerDirtyD ... I say Cattle Crest downhill in Bommer. DDD can play since that is one of our mutual favorites. You can lead, but ... there is no passing on Cattle Crest. You will know exactly where i am. I will be talking Sh!t to you the entire way down.

And don't play the old man card, we are all old. This is the old broken down, former glory board.

Train as long as you want ... let me know when you are ready.
I should have clarified “your favorite downhill that I’ve actually ridden.”

Did I hear it right that even The Luge is off limits due to the fire closure?
The current closure area has the Luge inside it. Does that mean its off limits? :whistling:

Given that the latest communication from idiot in charge, Ranger Vance, that the reason for the draconian closure is that there is no one available to perform normal ranger duties. Which I'm sure is more involved than leaning on the side of a truck, but given thats all I've ever seen them do I'm not sure what other duties they do. Maybe they have a shovel or something in the back of the truck and they lean on that instead occasionally?

The usual Sunday morning fare up and around Clamshell. Said hello to the neighborhood coyote. Bit of a later start now that the sun is rising later. Marine layer down street level, but rose through it by the time I hit the lookout. Lots of folks out.
Haven't ridden for a few weeks. Wasn't fast, wasn't slow, just pedaled.

Oats Peak climb with @blixet this morning at MdO. Easily the best trail system there, clearly built by mountain bikers for mountain bikers with its endless flow and fairly gentle climb. Tom decided to backtrack at one of the lookout stops and I hammered on to reach an unnamed black diamond trail access point. Im not so sure Id call it black accept for one section that was about 100 yards long that was super hectic. We met up a Bebee TH and bllasted down that together. It was smiles for miles. Adding this one to my rotation. Its special. At the bottom we rolled Bluff Trail to see the sea cliffs of the Park. Wonderful natural beauty and it looked super fishy! Videos coming when I get home tomorrow. For now, enjoy some pics...

I was having a moment so to speak, my opinion and vote really really doesn't matter! Haha.
And once I get over my current Medical concern ( read getting old sucks) I can start riding more adventurous areas. And I do need it. We should really together one of these days.

I've been seeing quite a few riders heading to the luge in the last few days, so it appears to be open as far as they're concerned.

As mentioned by @SnakeCharmer, we rode Oats Peak this morning.
IMG_0633.JPG
It was a casual grind up towards the top.
IMG_0618.JPG

Then Mike went on to the black trailhead and I blasted down to the rest stop.

The mountain was so empty, it was awesome.

IMG_0620.JPG

We reconnected rode the flowy goodness that is the Beebee Trail down to the connector at Oats Peak and let it fly all the way down.

Mike chasing down spider webs.

The Bluff Trail bonus was great with views of the unspoiled Central Coast.

Worthy of its own ride report...

@herzalot
@DangerDirtyD
I would say to see who is the best rider of you 3 amigos, do a ride/race/manfest on a trail that none of you have been on, like Portal, The Whole Enchilada, etc. real mountain bike trails........
Good idea - but I will concede now. I am not fast on trails I don't know, and I don't ride trails where a mistake will lead to certain death. And frankly, I have never cared whether I am faster or slower than anyone, except the few times I attached a number plate (see avatar). Then, I was faster than most in my class. It just so happens that I was in the second wimpiest class (Sport). You boys want to measure your limp, over-50 mt biking dicks against others? I recommend challenging @doublewide to a DH race.

My mt biking validation comes solely from my post count on IMTBTrails! :cautious:

Rode Madonna Mtn. again this morning. And it bit me in the... well not there, but in the ankle and knee. Got caught up in one of the steep rocky drainage turns and put a foot down that slipped. Ankle got twisted to the breaking point, screamed like a chick, and then it went to the next joint, my knee. Couldn't get untangled with the bike and my leg. Took the fast line back like last time when it was a mechanical issue. This time biomechanical. Iced, Tylenol Arthritis and lots of Paso wine. May not be able to hit MDO in the AM. We shall see.

That darn lump of dirt!

Went and checked out the new expressway thats been installed to the Luge. I took the signs warning me to be on the lookout for fire trucks, a complete lack of a closure sign and at least 3 groups of riders and hikers already in front of me as justification for my actions. Plus worst case I lay on the accent and claim not to be from round 'ere. :whistling:
Started in Whiting before heading over.
They've run the dozers the entire length of STT as far as I can tell, certainly it goes up Goat Hill. The little booter just past the top of FU Hill / Little Mustard has been destroyed during the widening project. They also ran the dozers across the top of the ridgeline from Modjeska Grade to above the flag. In some places its as wide if not wider than STT itself. The new expressway is pretty dusty and soft in places, the run down to the Luge was interesting. Not helped by a rear tyre that should have been replaced months ago.
I didn't go looking for the top of it but I'm pretty sure they ran a fire break down from STT into the back of the new subdivision part way up Santiago Canyon road from Cooks. Maybe it could become a new trail?
Luge is fine.
Looking up Modjeska from the Luge you can't see any sign of the fire coming down into the canyon.

I tried this morning and got denied. After going through Whiting and up Modjeska to the start of STT, I was pleased to see no closure signs whatsoever, so I proceeded. I did not even get out of sight of the gate when a fireman in a pickup truck rolled up and told me the entire area was closed. I debated with him about there being no signs, and he responded that the gate was locked. I of course told him it is always locked, LOL.

That said, I have great respect for firefighters and police officers so I agreed to turn around. There were 5 bikes in sight, but farther ahead, so he was going to be busy.

Anyway, I rode back to Whiting. Not thrilling, but there was some eye candy on Borrego so not a total waste of time.

I retract my statement then.
Bummer
