I Rode My Bike Today...

I posted this in the wrong place (e-bike thread)

I rode my bike again today. I am a f@cking legend! Skied Sunday, rode W-L-W Tuesday. Skied Wed and Thurs. Rode Luge yesterday and Aliso today. All with a badly damaged hip and knee and bronchial issues. Damn I'm cool. And brave too. And modest! ;) :whistling: :Roflmao

OK that's self-mocking. It's like bragging that I made it up a flight of stairs. (I did, by the way).

Cheater Cholla, Rock-It, Mathis and Meadows with my bro and his new moped. 12 mi 1700' Beautiful weather, and only saw about 95% e-bikes out there - 20 plus...

Bikes are fun! Not having to wait for my brother even funnerer! :)
It blows my little mind that you managed to do none of that safely!

I rode again today! Two days in a row ... crazy!
I decided on something easy ... so a docent led IRC Limestone Canyon ride it was. I also remembered why I don't do docent led rides anymore. :Roflmao I sort of wish I had just kept going up the road and ridden The Luge.

I kid, sort of. It was OK. I definitely had plenty of time to take pics and I found out some good info ....

Apparently, there is another open space opening soon ... Red Rocks. More interesting, I was told the three new open spaces (Gypsum, Saddleback & Red Rocks) will all eventually be open to the public 7 days per week. I see that as another way to thin out the hikers.

No KOM's were challenged. :mad::Roflmao

Like bringing a gun to a knife fight. If my bike was the AR, I was the AK. :Roflmao

So that's a forced group ride??

No, it is a voluntary group ride, but you have to stay behind the lead docent.

I kid around. It was fun ... and was literally billed as "slow paced," so I knew what I was getting into.

It was nice being out there without hundreds of hikers and nice to stop and enjoy the views for a change. Beautiful weather too.

@mtnbikej mentioned yesterday him and the Prof were planning on riding so near me it'd be rude not to join them. I must admit I was a touch apprehensive as I discovered yesterday afternoon my hand felt like someone had smashed it with a sledgie after yesterdays trail work. It was bad enough to the point I was struggling to hold onto a beer last night. How the hell was I going to hold on to a handlebar? A good soaking in CBD cream overnight and a teaspoon of harden the feck up and I figured I was good to go. I took the squishy bike just to make sure the hand didn't take even more of a battering than it needed to.
Being closest I was fashionably late to the meetup point approximately 3 minutes from my house. We turned onto Santiago and started climbing up the hill. The prof regaling us with his tale of heroism from earlier in the week riding the last 1/2 mile to bluejay sans seat after his decided to part company with the rest of his bike. Of course he then turned round and rode back down. I was surprised to hear he only Liberaced himself a couple of times on the way back down forgetting he had no seat and hitting the lever .
We turned onto Modjeska and I think there was an inkling of feeling returning to my toes. I had plenty of layers on but damn it was cold and the wind was razor sharp. Unsurprisingly nary any other sane souls to be seen on STT apart from some trail runners and we all know they aren't right in the head. We finally ran into a couple of blokes descending Goat Hill, otherwise that was pretty much it for cyclists the entire day. Just past the top of Goat Hill I reckon I found @herzalot's bobcat. It scampered across the trail and then bailed into the bushes above me. I managed to spy it and a mate through the shrubbery but they disappeared further in as the others caught up.
There was some brief discussion about dropping down to Rose Canyon but the decision was made that until someone brushes it then don't even bother. We continued up to Cadillac, I rounded the corner and gave the hiker at the top enjoying the view a heart attack with my cheery good morning. Poor old bloke nearly leapt of the ground. He kindly waited for us to get on our way before following us down. Cadillac is an absolute riot at the moment, its sketchy, slippery in spots and rocky as always. We all walked one bit, the line is obvious but none of us could commit, the otb consequences wouldn't be pretty... The rest was fine although I swear the ruts get deeper (is that even possible!) every time I go down at the moment. One hardy hiker making his way up, he heard us yelling and laughing well before we got to him. A bunch of guys on motos near where the truck has gone down the gully.
One good thing with all the rain, its smoothed out the bottom section so the high line to stay out of the rut where I managed to do my 180 degree spin once is much easier to navigate.
An icy head wind on the road back to O'Neill reminded us that yes, it was still feckin cold! We took the easy option and went up and over the Monastery road before heading back up to the cars. Overall a few muddy spots around but otherwise the dirt was in great shape.

Good ride with great company, what more can you ask for?

I rode today, A1 Luge Ride at Rock n Road. 300-400 of us rolled out just after 11. (About half or more ebikes)
I've been sick and was way off the back very early.
Basically did a slow solo loop. Great views and a bit chilly.
I saw the same debris as @Lost Kiwi , I assumed it was from some in the group getting too sporty at the same time.

Enjoyed some free carnitas tacos at the end.

300-400 bikes in one group? That's horrifying and, in my opinion, extremely rude. But then, I'm not a social rider so I don't get the appeal of riding in a group bigger than 8 or so. At least it was STT Luge which is primarily a one-way route. I can't imagine the impact on other trail users if it were at Aliso, Whiting or Santiago Oaks.

On the paved Aliso Creek Trail a few coming the other way were pissed, rightfully so.
It is something to be in and see a large group ride.
I've done mass start Fondos with up to 9k riders. Permitted and police escort for the first few miles. Then, everyone spreads out.
Also did RAGBRAI which had 20k participation, but not a mass start and kinda strung out all day.
Not for everyone.

Well hopefully this was a permitted event on a closed course. I certainly didn't see any signs up warning me of this event when I rode there Friday.

I got caught up in Luge and Brews last year due to bad timing as I came out of Whiting. and that was a complete nightmare. Constant catching slow people on STT and constantly getting passed by fast people and eBikes all the way to the flag. Luge run was hindered badly as well.

Not a fan of any of these mass group rides.

A few rides over the winter break. Stuck to the local loop, nothing really of note. Suffered during the first ride on the 17th, due to the beginning os Norovirus, then felt like crap for the next 12 days as it slowly spread through our house. Just a lot of nausea, no vomiting for me , can't say the others were as lucky although they did recover quicker. Saw half a dozen turkey vultures circling from the bench, so wondered what was up. Once I got back to the street I found out. A severely mangy coyote was digging in to the ribcage of a deer in a small horse enclosure. There were about 2 dozen vultures in the surrounding trees and hanging out on the ground waiting for thier turn. Didn't get very clear pics, but a decent video.

Next 2 were nothing significan, 7.5/ 8ish miles, 1350 feet.... ya know... Tried to check out a connector trail to a different area of the preserve yesterday, but looked like it would be hike a bike, and not reallly worth the trek. Really windy ride yesterday.

A quick blast round Whiting for my sneaky lunch ride today. A bit breezy with head winds in some rather inconvenient spots. Whiting at lunchtime is definitely much busier than the Luge! I was glad I had my bell on. Scattered a herd of deer bombing down Concourse and nearly ran into a clueless biker with headphones on coming up Live Oak. A bit of a grind in that annoying wind across to Borrego, its been a while since I've been in there and I didn't realise they'd tried to replace the trail with a beach. Splashed my way through the creek crossings before giving a clueless hiker a fright, she was standing in the middle of the trail on her phone completely oblivious to anything around her. Didn't even hear the bell
Went up and over Cattle Pond before the grind up Mustard. Had Four Corners to myself and just rolled straight into Cactus. Thought about heading up Vulture View but took Santiago Ranch road out to Sage Scrub and then climbed back up Concourse home. Climbing Concourse still sucks, especially when its has a headwind as well. I was glad I had the geared bike today.

I guess its a way of breaking up the monotony of Luge laps but it definitely is not as much fun for the descents.

Longest ride since the "thing" @ 6.5 mi. Hill climbing getting better, strength is coming back slowly. Have ridden every day except rain delays for a couple of weeks. Slowly, slowly catch me a funky monkey. Hitting the dirt tomorrow and seeing how far I can go. It is harder up there than down on the neighborhood streets.

Lunchtime Luge lap, one dude struggling up Modjeska and another at the gate. I heard a bell which must have been attached to an ebike coming up behind me on the last climb above the flag so stomped the pedals and rolled straight through everything. Trails in great shape and doesn't appear to have suffered any ill effects from the big group ride on the weekend.
Raced another dude up the first half of Ridgeline. He probably didn't realise we were racing but I'm taking it as a win :D

Wish the wind would buggar off but beggars can't be choosers.

Wow Kiwi, youre all about Action January. Glad to see you back out and rolling regularly.

What is this , a New years resolution!?!?
Its a perfect storm right now. The work boss is in Europe for a couple of weeks and I can get my stuff out of the way early (6am calls really do suck though). Plus she who wears the pants appears to be somewhat happy with the recent renovation progress so I ride whilst I can. I'm sure this run will come to an end shortly!

Quick Whiting jaunt today, down Concourse, up and over Line Shack down Live Oak before turning round and heading up Dreaded. Got chased up Dreaded by an enthusiastic runner but dropped him on the second steep pitch 2/3rds of the way up. Dropped down Cactus before heading up to Vulture View. Took an unplanned stop at the entrance to the single track there when a sudden loss of talent caused me to inspect the dirt close-up. Stupid front wheel washout, however I skillfully stopped my fall with my head, shoulder and knee
Dropped down to Sage Scrub and climbed back out Concourse.

Spilt a bit of Claret but should be good to go again tomorrow. Did realise I never straightened my bars since my last crash months ago. Probably should do something about that, before they were ever so perceptibly out, now its pretty wonky. Need to find some new cleats as well, current ones are literally rattling in the pedals they are that worn out.

Ooopsie! Don't do that!

I hope you're not too banged up. What kind of cleats?

Well it was quite unplanned! One of those typical "well feck me, how did that happen moments" :D I'm all good, noggin took a slap but no damage (not like anyone would know)
I've got some (Shimano) cleats lying round, just need to remember where amongst the home reno :poop: I last left them.
