I Rode My Bike Today...

Laguna early morning Veteran's Day Ride.
Beat the heat by heading out at 6:30 and the temps were nice. Down Lynx to Stagecoach, up Willow to TnA. I felt the heat coming out and of course, "Trail work" as you bomb in. No one in sight. Back up to Willow but now the sun is beaming down my neck to hit Old Emerald. Climbing out of felt like an oven. So glad I went early. Talk to some riders at Fenceline and back to Coastal Peak Park.

Going to call my uncle now.

Good ride - except you didn't do Lynx - I imagine you did Lizard and Camarillo. Still can't believe you ride a fully rigid bike. Single speed no less. Quite the purist!

Several firsts for us today. 1- First time riding Historic Railroad Trail in Boulder City. It goes to Hoover Dam and back. 2- First family ride on a dirt trail. 3- First trail ride for my 9 yr old. He’s been claiming he can’t ride on dirt. 4- First trail ride for my wife. Last time was 15+yrs ago at Aliso Woods, she went OTB on a small bump on coyote run and said right then and there she will never MTB again.
Although to me this isn’t a full legit MTb trail, it is a trail, so it counts. Everything about it ruled. Even when my 9 yr old broke down crying twice cause it was to much uphill. Even when my 14 yr old stayed 100 ft ahead of us the whole time cause he didn’t want to be seen with his parents. Awesome views of Lake Mead fir most of the ride. And, at least 5 tunnels to go through along the way. Lots of Interpretive signs along the way. Explains the history of Lake Mead & Hoover Dam. A little more than 7.5 miles out and back. Bikes are fun…my 9 yr old said so at the end of the ride. Now he says he needs a bike like mine to go better.

Pedals be turnin', it counts.

Finally got friend Allan up to ride Exploration after threatening to for several months now. I think he's a convert! Didn't have the legs to keep going up to the lookout, so will need to go again... sooner is better than later! As I keep saying over and over... PERFECT conditions in the 'Berdoos right now!

One new tree down since a couple weeks ago:

Too much glare to be clear, but that little bit of orange in the middle is the Pacific... probably Huntington. From up higher in Running Springs the angle was much better and you could see the container ships lined up!

Does your 14 yr old know what you do on a bike? He should be proclaiming, “That’s my dad, bitches!”

This is the best report in a good long while. Congrats on that load of firsts, Kevin! I'm sure you're managing expections, but I'd be beside myself with future possibilities. AYE

Now you did it...gotta tool up your people with whatever they want. :geek: So worth it to share with your family. The riding you do at your limit has no bearing on the good times you have with your loved ones. Horses for courses. Enjoy whatever comes next! Don't scrimp on the pads until they start sandbagging you.

@mike the future possibilities constantly run rampant in my head. Scouting out bikes and gear is nothing new. I am ready to go to the LBS in a moments notice. It's the lack of interest from the yearning riders that keep money in my pocket. New bikes aren't far out though, both boys need to go up in size and quality. The wife's bike is from 2003, in mint condition. She already told me on the way home from the ride she doesn't need a new bike. That hers is fine, but the boys could step up. I'm over here like... NEW BIKES FOR EVERYONE!!!!

Bless a mom willing to make due while the kids get new bikes. Maybe sneak home a demo or two just to be sure she loves the classic. :sneaky::thumbsup:

Spectacular :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

TheProfessor and I head up Maple Springs last night to go to Motorway. Temps were warm when we rolled at 5:00. No lights fire up for the climb up…except the couple times we encountered vehicles up high. As we progressed up, the wind got stronger and stronger.

by the time we got to 4 Corners it was howling. It didn’t take much debate to cancel the loop to Motorway. We turned around and headed back down Maple Springs. The wind was bad. I was out front but felt like I was riding in the back based on how much dirt was being whipped up. It was bad.

the wind won, we lost.

Just another Blackstar to Sierra ride today. Had one of those perplexing kind of rides. Legs felt good but I was overall a little tired. Got up BS and second guessed Sierra. Still made it over. Then I started thinking of going down Coal. I sat on the railing at Coal and contemplated my existence.

While deep in thought, I watched a guy cranking up Coal on what I believe was a 1990 Rockhopper. Running very narrow tires maybe 26x1.8 or more narrow. Gave him some props and decided to go back down BS.

Probably the right call considering I was tired. I just didn’t feel like heading home today I guess. Maybe I’m a little burned out right now. Need a few days off to find my mojo.

I hit up Exploration Trail in Running Springs today and ended up getting three loops in. What a fun downhill (well, sort of DH) that trail is. By the third time down I had figured out most of the tricky bits on some of the ups that were causing me to put a foot down here and there. That trail is much easier when you know what's coming around the next blind corner.

There were only two sets of hikers on my first ride, but the second had TONS and the third had two large groups of kids. I figured as much after I finished my first loop and the parking at the bottom was jammed. Earlier is better (I started pedaling at about 8:20 AM and there were only 3 other cars at the bottom). Until the groups of kids, everyone was nice and was off to the side due to my China Bell.

I only saw 5 other bikes. One went up the road and then came back down the road. He must not know there is a fun trail at the top. o_O When I finished, there were two fatties unloading eBikes. I asked them if they were about to get a good workout in, but they must have missed my sarcasm. :Roflmao Oh well, I try.

Exploration itself might be my favorite trail. It has some of everything. I do not much enjoy the ride up the road to the trailhead though.

I did destroy my CamelBak today. There is a tree leaning over the trail pretty low and I thought I could duck under it. I underestimated my 6'1" and a branch just shredded my pack, slicing open two of the pockets. Oh well, it was my old one and I have another ready to go so no worries. I am lucky I did not get pulled right off the bike though.

Four traffic jams on the way home, which was lovely ... and also why I do not go up there very often.

Good fun overall, and the weather could not have been better. 70-72 the entire ride, except the very beginning when it was in the 50's but warmed up fast.

Mount Pacifico, Hillyer, and the Silver Moccasin from Christian Camp to the bottom of the switchbacks with @SnakeCharmer ... Quite a few campers and hikers out today, but not a single biker. Hard to comprehend when it's in the 80s down below in civilization, and 60s at Chilao. :inlove:

The trails are in horrible shape, the air is hard to breathe, and you OC guys would hate every minute of it... Scouts honor. I took some video, but it's so bad that I probably won't upload any. :whistling:

I'll be honest....I didn't have a big ride in me today....nor did I really want to do one. Maybe I'm still tired from last weekend.

So I met up with @cajun and @H2oChick for a ride in their hood down at the coast. We did some local trails to eventually work our way up the climb under the Toll Rd. to the entrance at RidgePark. From there we ran into another friend and the threesome turned into a foursome.

Down Lizard, up Laurel, down BVD, up Emerald Cyn, down FenceLine/Missing Link then back down East Fork/West Fork? into the Bommer Access parking area. Too many ebikes out today. The ranger was parked at the top of Bommer when you come in at RidgePark....warning ebikers they aren't allowed....but didn't issue any citations.....then why bother.

Apparently I missed @bvader on our way down East Fork.

Fun ride....but it got hot.

20 / 3100'

The big takeaway from today's ride, was my annual numbers. Today I matched my climbing numbers from last year. This will be the first year since my million feet year that my climbing numbers haven't declined. Which is kinda crazy considering I haven't even been trying. With 6 weeks still to go, I should be able to put some more separation from last year.

That looks pretty dang fun, I must say!

That is the Silver Moccasin switchback section, which comes right after the Hillyer DH (the spine...). With a 10 minute road climb, there is a pretty cool extra credit section of the Silver Moccasin that starts from Christian Camp. You'd like all 3 of the main descents. :inlove:

There has been a lot of brushing on this section, and it looked like a completely different trail to me. The staircase shortly after the 1:00 mark wasn't there when we did the night ride. o_O:confused:

Note how crowded the trail is...
