how do you motivate?

Summertime is a big downer for me. After long hot days in the shop working outside, the last thing I feel like doing when I get home is climb on the bike for a ride. :( My beer consumption goes up, and fitness level goes down. The same old dry dusty dirt just doesn't do it for me. And to top it off, this year there isn't going to be any kind of "get away" MTB vacation anywhere cool. My wife has me signed up to go to Florida of all places for a week in August

Maybe I will finally drive up to Big Bear this weekend a let the Skyline trail loop give me a good ass kicking?

if you go, what day are you planning to go? sunday? if so, do you mind if I tag along? I usually bring mexican beer for the end of the ride... just sayin'

I lived in Florida for 15 years. I'd rather visit the sun in August... Good luck!

Don't worry, though... I'm sure the hurricanes won't hit this August, unlike 2004... ;)

Thanks. Thanks a lot. I will be sure to tell her that. Going to be really hard to keep from repeating "I told you so" when we are all sitting around the house twiddling our thumbs with AC on full blast   Orlando. August. WHY WHY WHY

Suck it up Buttercup

Even if it is for a short ride....get out and ride.

Set a goal, this tends to get you to ride, even if you don't want to.

Laziness is a drug....and the more you have of it....the stronger it gets.

I work outdoors...usually out on galvanized decking, so you wanna talk about getting cooked.....and in welding fabrication shops where it is just a gigantic steel shed with no concept of air movement or AC, yet I have no problem going out for a ride in the heat. It's what I enjoy doing, so I won't allow the weather or the season dictate what I enjoy doing.

Hence the "suffering is fun" part of his signature line...

It's a sentiment I wholly agree with, by the way. Riding in the heat doesn't have to miserable, you just have to pick your rides.

Don't forget the rain storms which hit every afternoon in the summer around 4:00. You can usually set your watch by them, and the humidity afterwards is a blast! ;-) You can't imagine how many Mickey Mouse ponchos they sell... every afternoon. While there, I would visit Gatorland in Kissimmee, and maybe take an airboat ride through the swamp. If you can get away from Central Florida, I much preferred the gulf coast. We used to vacation on Anna Maria Island... one road in and out, and no tall buildings. Or... get down to Key West- where it's ok to get sloppy drunk, and crawl from bar to bar.

I'm messing with you, but I may be in your boat soon. The wife has been conspiring with my boys to go back for a visit, as they were both born there. I may very well lose this battle.

Yeah, the Gulf Coast...I spent a week there one July, in Sarasota (Siesta Key). Wasn't much more than 93 degrees on the beach by 10 am, and 168 percent humidity. And the breeze don't blow underwater. :P

Lightning while you're at the beach...Fun!!!

However, we didn't spend the whole week on the beach. I highly recommend seeing Cape Canaveral (Kennedy). And the roads in Florida are what California used to have.

That's why god invented surfing...

And yes, riding in the trees at altitude will keep you stoked. Ride less frequently - but ride in the mountains.

For me, all I need to do to get some motivation is to buy something new. A pair of socks, a helmet liner, grips, tires - whatever. Sad as it is, that always helps me want to get out and ride.

You are definitely invited to share my pit area at the next Temecula ride...

I will, but ONLY if you wear the salmon jersey !

Summer is my least favorite time of year for riding as well. Not a big fan of the heat. I just keep the rides shorter and get out early or late in the day. I don't often make it up in time for sunrise but sunsets always get me stoked. Weekends, I try to get up to elevation. Might do a couple Sierras backpacking weekends this summer to get even higher than what we can do on bikes. September will be here soon enough!

I always make sure I'm committed to another rider so I am obligated to get out there. Once I am out riding with someone else I quickly switch to motivated... :)
If I don't set up a ride with someone else, then it's a crap shoot that I will get out and ride... :(

So true. As much as I love the sport it is still hard for me to get out on my own. So glad there are so many clubs and options to choose from.

So Big Bear was just the medicine I needed. :D  The thunderstorm that was looming while we rode yesterday brought in a wonderful cold breeze that felt AWESOME. There is definitely something about the mountain air, pine trees, ferns and flowers up there that just invigorates me.

So there it is... All I need for motivation is to read couple of good RR on imtbtails and then plan a trip to big bear. that seems to do the trick. ;)

Thanks, but not really helpful. Not everyone enjoys suffering like you do. And some people have different tolerances for the heat. When the humidity goes up and the temps are above 90 my body just shuts down. just can't function normal when it's that hot.

Beer is generally my motivator - call me an alcoholic, it won't bother me.

I also entertain myself when I ride: I think of funny things, I argue w myself, I contemplate life and whom else I can piss off. :o

I get the chuckles when I'm riding something intense, especially when I'm right on someones azz, or vise versa. Then when we start making mistakes from the pressure I start flat out laughing out loud!

But there's that brutal time period, if you have to order it and you're waiting for it to come in, that's almost impossible for me to get motivated for a ride until the new stuff arrives

Like others, one trick I use to motivate myself is to think of how good that ice cold beer is going to be when I finish the ride. True story...That and I just had to tell myself to stop looking for excuses and just go ride.

I am the opposite, I have a hard time getting motivated in the winter. I guess it comes from growing up with short summers (UK) but I am most energetic in the summer. Because of all the sodium loss, I motivate myself by imagining Margarita is waiting for me at the end of the trail.

Sometimes it's hard to get motivated but I will just simply force myself to go ride knowing that after a ride I will be so glad I did. After a ride I feel so mentally and physically refreshed. Having your bike dialed and new blingy parts doesn't hurt either.

I have always rode more often in the winter because I do not like the heat much. What I do in the summer is wait until late in the day and go evening rides or night rides. Late afternoon many times the ocean breeze picks up and makes riding more enjoyable. Riding near the coast also helps a lot. My biggest motivation is high altitude riding, out of the poison oak and poodle dog, above the bugs, late afternoon thunder showers and cool air. Now that is motivating for me.

Hey..
If you rest for whole day and ride in the night, then how you have solved the problem of lights? Is it not difficult to ride in the night??

A good way to motivate yourself to get out and ride is have a 2 year old and new born at home. Even if it's 100 degrees and noon, if my wife gives me the thumbs up to hit the dirt, I'm gone before she can look at the blue line on the baby's diaper and ask me to change it before heading out. Thank goodness my wife understands my need for riding. Hell, even my short ride to work and back is somewhat therapeutic.
