Forest Service Closure Extended thru October 8th

This just in...

Gab is open from redbox west, only the portion of Gab between redbox and Chantry is closed. Same with silver moc north of Charleton flat, it is open from three points to just north of Charleton. However, you won't be able to drive there for a little while until the ACH is re-opened. So you can still do normal strawberry loop and super strawberry w finish down Gab to JPL. I don't think one can bike up to Eaton saddle from redbox, as that road is also closed. However, I'd expect the road closures to end much sooner than the trail closures!

Please don't die on Portal, mmmkay?

Rode Mag 7 including Gold Bar Rim & Portal today (my first time on Portal) and it was glorious. First half of Portal is supposedly the part to die on but it wasn't bad at all. They had signs at the two sections that would be impossible for mere mortals like me to attempt anyway with DISMOUNT NOW and some other verbiage on them. The second half was tight mega-chunk (similar to Milagarosa in Tucson if you've rode that) that was challenging for sure but such a blast. On the whole, a Top 5 ride of my lifetime for sure. Better than The Whole Enchilada in my opinion....we'll be riding that tomorrow, up Hymasa and then Captain Ahab on Tuesday.

That's awesome - but definitely worthy of its own thread!

I REALLY need some dispersed camping!!!

On the off topic, I am planning on the Whole Enchilada Loop in a couple of weeks.

The dirt road section going up is in terrible shape. Washboard city and crazy dusty. Our shuttle driver yesterday said he does it twice a year and claims he only carries one extra water bottle (vs stashing water to refill like I've read others do).

Three bottles total? Wow. I guess that's the difference between riding at elevation and Palm Springs. In the best conditions I can do the PCE loop with 4 bottles (2 up, and a refill) AND drink as much as possible while I am at the top.

I'll probably plan for 4 bottles (two plus refill at the top) plus fuel. I think it will be overkill, but just barely.

YOu could always just do it as an out and back:
