Fires!?!?

What a heavy day yesterday. We live off of Mulholland in Calabasas, and up pretty high with a view facing North. We had a good view of the fire from when it started all the way until it jumped the freeway and started spreading into Agoura, Malibu, etc. We were pretty much due South of it, and as it marched South the winds also pushed it West, so diagonally away from us. Thought we'd seen the worst of it in our area, but then around noon it REALLY kicked back up closer to where it started and made an unexpected push towards us. Had the perspective inducing experience of packing up valuables with a fire bearing down on us for the second time in three years. Got to watch some tanker drops out the window. By the time we evacuated it seemed like we were out of any imminent threat due to helpful (for us) winds, and some serious ass-kickery by the fire fighters. Looking at the map, seems like literally everything that I've been riding will have been destroyed or adversely affected. Obviously that's the least important aspect here, but but gave me some pangs nonetheless. Hope everyone on here is safe.
Oh no!!! Hope and pray that all is ok for you!

Probably should have mentioned I did get back to our house today, and everything is fine, other than smelling like smoke inside. Deputies checking IDs at the bottom of Mulholland said we're still under mandatory evacuation. With the smoke, and cable/internet/phone still out I wasn't really tempted to stay anyway, so we're safely in a hotel another night. Maybe premature to say we dodged a bullet, but projected winds tomorrow should push things further away from us.

Great news!! Praying it stays that way!

I probably shouldn’t have posted that we were in the clear. Checked out of the hotel this morning, but were turned away by deputies at old Topanga and Mulholland. Have read reports of spot fires close to the house, but neighbors who never left say they see nothing. Blood pressure is way up today. Fingers crossed.

Sara, so sorry to hear this. Best wishes to all affected by these fires. Friend of mine is still waiting to hear if her mom's house in agoura hills survived (her mom is ok)
Thanks for your kind words, thoughts and prayers my friends.
My grandparents ranch was a really cool place, my grandfather was retired mounted LAPD, He and my grandmother collected and rented out western theme movie props and also the ranch and barns were used for movie and magazine shoots(Playboy etc). He and my grandmother have passed, but my aunt and her husband lived on the property and ran the business somewhat, along with an animal rescue, they’re both attorneys. Thank God they’re safe, but most of the animals didn’t make it.
Stay safe out there people.

Wind changed today and the fire made a move on the south side of Tri Peaks. They got it under control by 2 pm. They were Phos-Chek bombing with the big wings until dark. The Phos-Chek is the bomb. They laid a line on both branches of the creek in Wildwood and stopped the advance in its own foot print. I was watching Thursday night and could not understand why the fire would not spot on Lizzard Rock. I saw the bright magenta streak Friday and then knew just what the magic was.
Happy wide open blackend trails

Thanks so much Gary, hope your friend didn’t suffer any loss! I also have an aunt by marriage who’s in Calabasas and her ex husband (my uncle) is in Pacific Palisades, no word yet..hoping for the best.

Now it looks like the fire is headed north. The 118fwy is closed from Topanga canyon to Yosemite Dr in Simi Valley. The Rocky Peak area is being affected right now.
It hit Stagecoach and the bottom of the G spot. It did not get deep enough into the canyon to torch the PO. Trails in photo: left to right Train tunnel, bottom Stagecoach, Center bottom of Animal fork of Stagecoach. Right Animal upper trail, G spot faint trail below. Alas 3 more trails fade to black. Funny I almost took my bike to work and was going to ride Stagecoach to Rocky Peak to Hummingbird (Easiest way up but the bottom is very steep). But it was not in the cards so I was not disappointed. Not shown is the bottom of Hummingbird which also burned.

Correction the fire did not cross the freeway and Hummingbird is untouched

Todays update: yes we are still burning. A larger flare up happened yesterday on both sides of Tri Peaks-Boney Mtn. The north side was hit with Phos-Chek and put out at the eastern boundry of the national park @ Hidden Valley. The south one smouldered until it hit the Sycamore Cyn flank of Boney, there it exploded and raced west all night. At first light it was climbing to Laguna Pk. How much of Sycamore was consumed I do not know. It looks like it went from Boney directly across the canyon which would be Two Foxes, Backbone, Overlook and Guadlajasca. But reading smoke plumes is like reading a broken watch, you can be right twice a day.
Happy toasted trails
