Climbing...

That’s why other sports are lame. If you think about it, running is basically the equivalent of going on a bike ride and climbing the whole time. That’s just silly.

I feel like biking is one of the few things where the reward is actually worth all that work.
Running lame?! No way, it’s the most freeing sport out there IMO. No contraptions needed, just lace up and head out the door! The endorphins are just as good as mtn biking for many of us!
But to each his own, as long as you have something, it’s all good:thumbsup:

lets be honest here. Who in their right mind would rather climb Trabuco then down? or Holy Jim?

I'm definitely not going to argue your point. For example, who in their right mind would ski, if you had to walk back to the top of the slope after every run? I wouldn't say no to going to a downhill park, to have numerous fun downhill runs without the work associated with uphill biking. I almost don't consider that the same sport/activity as mountain biking.

But there are two reasons I like uphill biking:
(1) The cardio/fitness benefits.
(2) The work barrier that keeps many people out of the back country areas.

I hate to come right out and say it, but I'm a privacy snob. I don't like crowds of people. I enjoy backcountry hiking and backcountry biking - because I can usually get away from the masses. If there was a shuttle to the top of Santiago Peak, can you imagine the thousands of people who would suddenly magically "appear" every weekend on Main Divide? Last weekend above Four Corners I saw one single person - and he was a crazy trail runner who RAN up Harding and was going to run down Joplin. That was it. Nirvana... when you consider that Orange County is the 6th most populous county in the entire USA.

+1, great post.

I think every mode of human- and animal-powered BC travel has merit. I may not do or like some, but it’s great there is a venue for all.

I tease about running because I’m horrible at it haha. It’s torture for me. We used to have to run miles and miles when I played basketball and I hated every minute of it. This frame isn’t built to run. Even in the peak shape of my life I hated it. But i have to agree it’s probably the pinnacle of simplicity.

I'd add making it outside in big surf to the list. You definitely earn your waves.

I think I’d actually be more interested in surfing if the waves around here were bigger. Usually seems lame around here. And cold. Did I mention cold? I’ve been out with my brother a few times and that was enough. Somewhere with good waves and warm water I could totally dig.

I stick to my prior forecast, which is that recreational e-biking (on trails) is a fad. E-bikes make complete sense if you are a commuter and/or live in a city. However whatever motivates people to go outdoors and ride in nature is not suddenly created just because of the advent of e-bikes. I have never seen the same e-bike back in the hills twice. Usually I see people that are like "wow, so this is mountain-biking?" and I never see them again.

I agree with this 100% and have been thinking the same thing after watching e-bikers in the various parks lately. I don't get the feeling any of them will "catch the bug" and be riding their eBikes week in and week out a year from now. Its a trend and they jumped on board, but will likely move to something else when this passes. I don't see the general love of being outside or "stoke" for bicycles from them that I do from observing others at the top of a climb or a trail head.

In the mid 2000's pit bikes and mini bikes were all the rage. Everyone had to have one. Companies were created and flourished. Heck there was even a race inside of an arena in Vegas coinciding with the Supercross. The first few years the race sold out for entries and the stands were packed. 2 years later, the race was a dud and the stands were empty. I don't know anyone that has or rides a pit bike now and most of those companies are gone. My guess is eMTB will go the same way within a few years.

I think the real long term market for eBikes is in commuters and people who live in hilly cities where riding is next to impossible.

I hope you guys know I was much less than serious with my nomenclature demands. :p:)

This WE I’ll be...ascending and descending. Something, somehow. :geek: (My buddy says it’s climb and dive.)

Fighting gravity – a noble pursuit that’s led us to the far reaches of space. So what if it can be pointless and painful. Get up, stand up, don’t give up the fight!!!

You can fool some people sometime. But you can’t fool all the people all the time!

Bad analogy! Running on level ground is much different than running uphill.
Like Sara said the endorphin rush is similar and there are Many sport that can give that to you . Lots of people dont like running cause it's challenging and /it's not your thing but lame it's not

Well said! I’m a crowd avoider too. I know when I’m far enough into the mtns where the less fit or less determined people can’t reach there’s no graffiti or trash and far less creepers.

I hear that @herzalot is hogging all the warm water and decent waves:thumbsup:

Contrary to what Surfline said this morning, the water temps have dipped substantially here in the last 24 hours. I would say about 62° this morning - down from 70° last Sunday. As for hogging the waves, I am the last person out there who is a threat to take a wave. I caught like two in the hour and 1/2 I was out. Not because there weren't any waves, but because I suck at surfing. Actually, I surf fine once I catch a wave. I suck at wave catching (positioning, wave selection, timing, etc). :bang:

We need an imtbtrails surf day. I’m worse than the worst out there, any help would be welcome!

I'm down! We can get @littlewave to help us out. Funny thing is, I am much better at teaching others to surf than I am at progressing my own surfing. I can get people to catch a wave and stand up - usually within the first few tries.

But this is the climbing thread, so we will have to climb aboard our surfboards!
