Burying The Hatchet

Polarizing times.
Extreme feelings of uncertainties.
People are stressed beyond a lot of limits.
I get that.

So I'm getting it that a lot of people were "disappointed" with my rant about the posts related to politics. Fair enough. I think I used more F Bombs in that rant than I have ever posted in my life. I got very passionate. I contacted several people on the side and said knock it off or "time outs" were on the table.

To be honest. I'm disappointed that we even have posts about politics. We have talked about this over and over and over again. Yet... there are people who just can't seem to control themselves.

TO BE CLEAR, my rant was not about Liberals or Conservatives (although it may have appeared to be one sided and I am truly sorry about that if it did appear that way) my frustration was with ANYONE that initiates a political spark that leads to others joining in.

What can I say or do that will convince everyone that politics is off the table on imtbtrails?

It has been mentioned to me (thank you) that some political slants were posted and it was not moderated by me. I missed it and still have not found it. It would lead folks to believe that comments on one side of the fence is okay and other views are not. Wrong. None is okay on imtbtrails.

All... I have a life too. I have to be honest, about once a month I hit the "Mark Forums Read" link to clear New Posts because it gets too overwhelming to keep up.

Maybe it's time for additional moderators, I don't know. I have always "hoped" for a Utopia of self policing that really does not need moderators. Was I foolish to think that?

So this is me burying the hatchet. For those of you offended by my somewhat beer induced affront, I apologize. Let me be clear about my apology. I apologize for offending people personally if I did. I do not apologies for being pissed off about posting of politics on either side of any fence, please note, I am clearly saying either side of the fence, none is acceptable. I do not want to lose mountain bike friends over my verbal assault, or over political views, you are too precious to me.

I will work with folks that are on the imtbtrails board. Yes, there is an unofficial board of members I seek council from and we will discuss how we are going to move forward with this.

In the meantime I repeat I am sorry for such an unprofessional outburst, I remind folks that I am not perfect. If you are looking for perfect, you are definitely in the wrong place. I am a hooligan.

I have absolutely no problem receiving any PM's from those that want to discuss any of this in any way they feel is important to them. I'm just asking that we be civil and honest and transparent.

If you are so damaged by my rant that you feel there is no return, I'm sorry to see you go.

Thanks for reading...

We get it....these are polarizing times. People are tired and worn out. People are passionate.

For the most part, we as a group have been able to keep it off the table. Unfortunately from time to time, comments are going to come up.

But......we are all adults here. Some have thicker skin than others....not saying we have any snowflakes here anymore.

I agree, I don't want to talk politics here. Maybe it's me keeping the rose colored glasses on to the members of the community here. Without politics, we are all on the same level in my eyes. No one is the "crazy gun toting bunker building malitia builder" nor are they the "bleeding heart no one can do any wrong give away the bank to everyone". We are a community of people....a community of cyclists.

Thanks @Mikie for taking the time to wipe the slate clean. We do appreciate that you could man up and do what was right.

I know that your beliefs are different than mine....but when we ride bikes together....none of that matters.

Let's all move on and continue what we have been doing.....ride and talk bikes.

Let's all remember how we can all really come together as a community:

Thanks for reaching out @Mikie, very cool of you.

These are in fact very stressful times and that can lower our boiling over point. Furthermore, it is an election year which makes this the hardest time period not to accidentally leak out something politically related. Its going on all over the place and in other social media forums. I am talking politics lately with people that I would not normally talk politics with. Its in our face for a few more weeks.

On that note, I too wish/hope that politics are excluded from this forum. Mountain biking is an escape from that stuff in its own way.

I feel that things will settle down after next month.

I notice politically-charged conversation slipping into the non-biking threads more than the straightforward I rode X, want to do Y, anyone have a Z threads. A perfect example you all saw was when this popped up in the Flu Shot thread recently. EVERYTHING has been politicized in our culture, and everyone has a team they are casually rooting for if not rabid fans of. The Breaking News and Coronavirus threads are basically off-limits to me as I'm going to read stuff that's going to piss me off, and I will want to respond with stuff that will piss others off. So nope, not going to go there. I try hard to check my snarky political side here. Real hard. It slips out now and then, and nine out of 10 times I regret it.

We've lost some good people in the last month. I hope it is temporary and they are just self-isolating. Cool, perhaps a smart idea. I'm hoping we can police this place to make it welcoming for them, and that they don't let stubbornness/ego get in the way of coming back.

So, long/short of it: Let's stick to biking, burritos, and beer... those are the Three Bs that we can (mostly) all get behind!

Edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention the one safe place here for everyone...

Perfect post, really.

As mentioned above, and in the previous "slow-down" thread, I think it's time for a good ol' fashioned IMTB social ride.

Agreed! My mileage in general has been for Sh!t since June... sucks. Heat, smoke, and viruses kinda' suck!
I finally have my legs back after my shingles outbreak. Let's do it before peak season kill them again.

Great a group ride where Ed goes out and hammers...:gag:

I must confess that when I saw the title of this thread, I dreaded opening it. I thought momentarily that @Mikie was either throwing in the towel on the website or he was gonna do a public slaying of some members. The title of this thread is a bit unsettling.:D
Burying the hatchet

This article is about the American English phrase. For other uses, see Bury the Hatchet (disambiguation).
Bury the hatchet is an American English idiom meaning "to make peace". The phrase is an allusion to the figurative or literal practice of putting away weapons at the cessation of hostilities among or by Native Americans in the Eastern United States.

It specifically concerns the formation of the Iroquois Confederacy[1] and in Iroquois custom in general. Weapons were to be buried or otherwise cached in time of peace. Europeans first became aware of such a ceremony in 1644:[2][3]

"A translation of Thwaites' monumental work Jesuit Relations, 1644, suggests the practice: "Proclaim that they wish to unite all the nations of the earth and to hurl the hatchet so far into the depths of the earth that it shall never again be seen in the future."

The practice existed long before European settlement of the Americas, though the phrase emerged in English by the 17th century.[1][3]

Massachusetts
An early mention of the practice is to an actual hatchet-burying ceremony.[3] Samuel Sewall wrote in 1680 "of the Mischief the Mohawks did; which occasioned Major Pynchon's going to Albany, where meeting with the Sachem they came to an agreement and buried two Axes in the Ground; one for English another for themselves; which ceremony to them is more significant & binding than all Articles of Peace the hatchet being a principal weapon with them."[4]

South Carolina
The Treaty of Hopewell, signed by Col. Benjamin Hawkins, Gen. Andrew Pickens and Headman McIntosh, in Keowee, South Carolina in 1795 established the boundary of the Cherokee Nation, and made use of the phrase "bury the hatchet". Article 11 reads, "The hatchet shall be forever buried, and the peace given by the United States, and friendship re-established between the said states on the one part, and all the Cherokees on the other, shall be universal; and the contracting parties shall use their utmost endeavors to maintain the peace given as aforesaid, and friendship re-established."[5]

Nova Scotia
Main article: Burying the Hatchet Ceremony (Nova Scotia)
The Burying the Hatchet ceremony happened in Nova Scotia on June 25, 1761. It ended more than seventy-five years of war between the British and the Mi'kmaq.

Montana
Exactly 50 years after the Battle of Little Bighorn, in 1926, Sioux Indian Chief White Bull and General Edward Settle Godfrey buried the hatchet at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Garryowen, Montana. It was near this site that Custer divided his forces and began his attack against the Sioux, Arapahoe and Cheyenne that were camped within the Valley of the Little Bighorn.[6]

Quebec
The phrase was used in 1759 by the Shawnee orator Missiweakiwa when it became obvious that the French war effort during the Seven Years' War (French and Indian War) was collapsing. The Shawnees had sided with the French against the English, but now the Shawnee would "bury the bloody Hatchet" with the English.

Delaware
At the Return Day festival in Georgetown, Delaware, which occurs after each Election Day, a "burying of the hatchet" ceremony is performed by the Sussex County chairs of the Democratic and Republican parties. The ceremony symbolizes the two parties making peace after the election and moving on.

Texas
The first record of a peace ceremony in San Antonio, Texas was in 1749 between the Spanish commander of the presidio Captain Toribio de Urrutia, Fray Santa Ana and the Lipan Apache people.[7]

I’ve subscribed but I’m not here to read the articles, I’m just here for the pictures and videos.
Just being honest here :whistling:

Im a manager by day and mountain biker by night with the occasional weekend off to ride. I get enough grief playing babysitter to grown ass adults that all they do is piss and moan, customers and coworkers alike. I know some are venting frustration, and I get that.
It’s nice to come here to escape my daily reality and dream about riding my bike. Ok so maybe I do read some of the articles :geek:
Especially some of those stellar ride reports that make my mind wander about the happy places we escape to :Barefoot:

why do you do this to me?? Defining burying the hatchet?!! Oh my I wanted to post up a word and definition but I WILL NOT!!
Mikie thanks for your post.
Back to the Floop. The best trail in Southern California. I hate the Floop. Oh, I guess I'll ride it today after work.

Yessss, a group ride will fix everything!
We’ll sing songs, hold hands, pass around some...food, talk about bikes, tell tall tales, drink whatever floats your boat... ....it’ll be great!!!!!!
I vote for a Cannell self shuttlefest...

But then - the hardtailers will go off one way, then they will splinter into the SS hardtailers vs the geared hardtailers vs the downcountry pragmatists vs the "overbiked" endurbros. Then a group of emtbikers will "ride" past...

I kid... I hope.

@Mikie thank you for this thread, and I appreciate your desire for a forum with 0 politics and 0 e-bikes, but we are relatively grown men and women. We cannot be isolated from the occasional political jab. As @Cyclotourist mentioned above, some threads are inherently political - most are not. We can choose which to read and which to avoid. I love the idealism, ethic and culture of "politics free" but I don't like the idea of iron-fisted censorship to protect us from ourselves. I don't want to protect my daughter from every discomfort in this world and I have noticed that most of us are capable of handling our disagreements in a mature way. Not always, but the center will hold and the kids will be alright.

(And yes, I throw in some political innuendo from time to time, but I am generally in favor of critical thinking and not polarization.)
