Bug bites!

Since we are on the topic, there are two bugs we really need to avoid here in the Southwest. The first is the Tarantula Hawk Wasp. In the image, the wasp is battling/holding a tarantula. It has the #2 most painful sting in the Animal Kingdom.

The other is the Velvet Ant, which is actually a wingless wasp. It comes in two varieties. The most common is bright red or orange in color. The other one looks like a mini-tumble weed. These have the third most painful sting in the Animal Kingdom.

How funny, I always see those velvet ants and they look so darn cute! Guess I won’t pick them upo_O

Vid of the lower section is up, I had a few "brushes with brush" also. It was pretty narrow in spots!

I had a few moments up top that were almost comical (they probably were to whoever was riding behind me) where I was like a pinball between the walls. Coming down I shared a warm embrace with one bush, where I was stuck under my bike in the bush with nothing solid to push off of. @Fueledbyex8 gave an assist with the extraction.

@Voodoo Tom, did you get a thorn remnant stuck in there? @buggravy made me think that. And I've had similar myself.

Biting flies...I despise those fukkers, they get me right through the shirt when it's wet against my skin. They really hurt! Make me like mosquitos.

Desert or brown recluse spider, check. Scorpion, check. Yellow jacket, paper wasp, bee, many checks. Anybody get stung inside your mouth...on two occasions?? (Or do you ride with your mouth closed all the time?) Ever taste a bee? Maybe you could guess that they're sweet. :geek: My dentist was like What happened on the side of your tongue?

@mountaingirl sara - Could it have been a fly of some sort? I had one that got me right through my Troy Lee glove on Harding last week. It stung for a couple days.

I was behind you for a lot of that... Looked smooth to me! That's the way I remember it...

The gnats were bad at Maple Springs yesterday. That's for sure. Horseflies biting through my gloves too. What if you had the unfortunate luck of having a bug get in your ear. How would you deal with that? Are there drops or something we should be packing along on rides?

Small enough to clip to your bars so you always have it during the summer. I have one, but will probably order a spare and keep one on each bike.

I don’t want a bug net that works for no-see-ems. Those have super fine mesh that is not good for visibility. (@knucklebuster will back me up here.) Sweat clings way more in the fine mesh too. Sea-to-Summit works perfectly for my needs, not the cheapest but the best IMO.

It was your recommendation that I used the first time I bought one a couple years ago (that long already?)... And I still have it. I just ordered a second one for the other bike.

LOL! Thanks for the honesty! #keepinitreal
I had a little spill right before getting back to the cars, thankfully no one noticed :Roflmao

No, I got a decent look at it before swiping it off..definetly tick looking just a bit bigger, and it didn’t have wings. The bite site is very red and swollen and hot to the touch today, but thankfully no pain just itchy now and then. It probably helped that I taught a few hot yoga classes today, to possibly sweat out some of the toxin ;). Also, I’ve been bitten by those stinkin’ flies many times and the reaction is very different from this one.
Will probably never know what that little :poop: was:cautious:
