All-purpose Lake Tahoe thread

Caldor fire jumped highway 89 and is burning away from property and toward the Tahoe Rim. Saxon Trail (Toad's), Armstrong Pass and Corral are toast. I can imagine Kinsbury Stinger up to TRT is in imminent danger. The Lake Trail runs closer to the shore, so a wide swath of it has definitely been burned.

Sarificing this incredible area laced with some of the best riding in the world...it hurts to have to do it. It will be rebuilt, but meanwhile...

Most of the northern edge (Desolation, etc.) is running into lots of exposed rock. The NE spur is the front. Amazingly, the forces have been able to keep it from running up Cold Creek drainage to the Rim.

2K firefighters amassed in in South Lake. Helo night drops from a mobile retardant plant. Sounds like a force, indeed. The work saving structures was impressive. I see the residences lost at 660+, so apparently there were significant losses in Christmas Valley and Meyers.

El Dorado County:

closure is extended to 9/30.

Best wishes for all to get back safely to intact property. Sorry for the recreational loss – I know the feeling too well.

They have been bemoaning this scenario for a decade. So may snags in the forest. They were afraid if a fire got loose.... Well now we have a forest that has much taxed undergrowth from the dry years, plus all those snags. It was going to happen, they predicted it. They talked about thinning the forest and removing the snags but only talk, no action. Now they will have a lot more snags to talk about.

The USFS has known this for a while now. What they don't have, and aren't given by Congress, are the resources to do it. See:

I have no idea what the truth is but the Forest Service in Prescott is always busy thinning & burning the piles. I can’t imagine the FS in Prescott is getting CA’s money.

USFS is federal. Dept of Agriculture. The money isn't tracked or funded by states. It's appropriated (or not) by Congress for nation-wide forest service duties. In this case, it's not.

***cough*** regulated, scientifically defensible LOGGING ***cough****

It's a thing. It works. People are stupid.
The biggest tinder box in N. Tahoe is the Pacific Industries land below Martis Peak. It would go up like a roman candle. I've seen almost no logging there in the last four years. Not regulated/scientifically defensible?

You mean these guys? Sierra Pacific Industries? Remember, they can only do what the state and USFS allow them to do. I'm not their shill, just stating reality. Even they can be part of the solution, if they're allowed to be.

My niece and her family who live in SL Tahoe were evacuated last week. They’re staying here in Santa Clarita, they don’t know if they’re house is gone and don’t know when they can get back up there to find out. He owns a business in Heavenly Valley, God willing, all is well when they return.
That was a "not like" like. Hoping for the best for your niece. It's gnarly up there, but improving.

I'm aware....what I meant was I'm sure the FS in CA gets a Sh!t ton more $$ than the FS in AZ yet AZ, at least in the PNF, seems to get a lot more done. I also know the the activists are a lot more active in blue states. one year when I was in Oregon, the activists were suing to stop the FS from thinning the forest near Sisters, OR outside of Bend. No more than two years later, that area burned like a MF'er and many blamed the devastation on not getting the necessary clearing done.

The wait is over for now. Tomorrow it’s totally on up here.

Trails around Fountain Place (Saxon/Toad’s, Corral, Armstrong) and Christmas Valley are closed but everything else is opening tonight.

Of course it’s a little dusty, but that doesn’t mean a lot as far as trails up here. Not sure what campground availability is, but Donner looked like 20% full when I rode through.

I’ll be mobbing north and east shore trails; happy to show anyone around.

Daaaam… Happy Face indeed. 1.7 miles of flow with about 35 places to easily get your bike off the ground. That’s not even the jump line. What a gem!!!!!!!!

Think a super tweaked McGill trail section, or like the recently burned Corral in South Lake. Gears or a high SS gear for this DH trail will make it more fun. 80 min house to house at a casual pace.

I have to say it always makes me a little sad for SoCal when I have an experience like this. One where MTB is celebrated with adding trails versus not even trying to open existing trails. Looking at you, CNF.

Yo, it’s prime season up here. This week’s showers will, doubtless, leave epic conditions starting this weekend.

My ability to ride is not looking great but I’m happy to run shuttles and flow with info, tracks, yada.

Most of the Rim Trail is open. Everything around N shore is open. Downieville is running. The only impactful trail closures are near South Lake Tahoe and in Christmas Valley. Otherwise GTG.
