A Great Read- Idlehour

Sunday sounds like the day... And as Kiwi is a San Gabes virgin, I'd really like to add on Upper Merrill for him. Give him a proper taste of a San Gabes type trail. That puts the total ride in the 5000 range.

Disclaimer- @Lost Kiwi - This ride will be orders of magnitude easier than Los Pinos on the adventure scale, but... It's not representative of the San Gabes as a whole. You're going to need to come back for a proper black diamond tour.

How early can you and the Prof be up here? Traffic is better early, as are the temps... I know from experience what it's like getting The Prof moving early. Promise him a warm seat heater and a blankie for the ride. :Roflmao
Sorry @Faust29 I'm out, quarantine for the next 5-10 days :(. Once I'm in the clear I will definitely be sorting out a day to come up though!

Ouch… If Kiwi is out, we don’t have to add on Upper Merrill. The rest of you knuckleheads have done it.
I am only open on Saturday for a big ride this weekend. However, if you ride it on Sunday, I should be able to do the LSM/EM climb with you early, but I would have to drop down Sunset/Horsey after that.

Should I bring the hardtail?

My 3 times have all been on the Moxie. I'll be riding Stumpy this time.

Wait? You're leaving me in the deepest parts of the forest with Dirty D?!?!!@#~!@ I could come out with a contact high! But if he's really really safe, I might be able to talk him into turning left... :whistling:

If you have the time Faustie, I'll go until you cramp so I can take photos for the RR. Give me intel so I know how much water & fuel to haul, and maybe consider bringing a light. How about we just shuttle the MoFo and be Monkeys?

You’re familiar with the climb to Inspiration Point (7.3/3200).

Idlehour is about 5 miles long, and we’ll gain another 1000 feet to get out of the canyon after the campground. A lot of that will be HAB.

Tacos after? If we ride to tacos, we might break 20 miles, but it will still come in around 4300 feet total.

I promised @burt I'd participate in a ride that emphasizes DH next weekend. Lemme see if I can invite him to this shindig for next weekend and postpone the grown-up ride for the weekend after (at the risk of the knobs of my rear tire continuing to fade).
I still have a DHF and Aggressor that I'm pretty sure I'll never use. Not sure on mileage but they have plenty of tread left. They're both 29×2.5WT. Let me know if you're interested.

I aced my test this morning for all the wrong reasons but quietly confident that I'll be good to go by Sunday. The prof said he was up for it, even said he'd get out of bed anytime :devilish:.

Awesome... Ideally, I'd say a 7:00 start would be the best, but you guys have a decent drive from Mexico to SoCan. Shoot for an 8:00 roll time? The good news is that the warmest part of the climb is usually on the first leg, as there is shade above that once we hit the fire road. Idlehour Trail itself is shaded from end to end...

I do expect to hear some cursing going up Lower Sam... Not sure there's an Orange County equivalent... I've started carrying dry gloves, headband, and jersey to swap out after the first 4 miles. :whistling:

I've negotiated an 8am start with the prof for Sunday. Pending a positive (negative) test result we will be there. He's already bitching and moaning like a boss, I think its a consequence of having 2 dentists bikes in the garage. The big girls blouse did cheer up remarkably when I mentioned he'd be able to hang out at the back with the musky borselleck . I'm bringing a mask cos I'll probably be on the struggle bus at the back as well and its most likely gonna be like riding with

(At least the conversation will be interesting :Roflmao)

Good thing the first leg of the climb is a gentle rolling 4/2000…
