+100 degree club

That's my presumption as it makes sense. But have heard that keeping it constant is easier than cycling it through.

Depends on different factors like the size and quality of the unit versus size of home, single story vs multi, insulation, ceiling height, etc.

At our house now we keep it constant around 72 and maybe bump it up to 74 if we leave the house for a bit and that has proven cheaper than letting it warm up and kicking it on only when we are home. It actually doesn't kick on too often at 72 but if I set it any lower it kicks on a lot more so 72 is the sweet spot at our house (pregnant wife is thankful). Just got my bill yesterday and it was $230 for the last month and that includes lights/appliances being on during the week with my mother in law at the house watching the kid. We only have 1 story but a huge attic as a buffer from the hot sun on the roof and our a/c unit is huge and efficient.

At our last house we had two stories and a flat roof with crappy insulation and the a/c was only good for a cool breeze and our bill was often $300+.

Your power utility company bills you monthly or every two months?

Every place I've lived since 1988 has had no air conditioning – except my car.

Mid 80s is fine indoors as long as work is sedentary. Add some air movement and upper 80s is reasonable. Prolly not if one lives in 72° every day...

It's not even 10:30 yet!

Wow, we'd be bankrupt if it cost that much every month. Our rental generally costs about that much in the heat of the Summer every two months. In the Winter, it can be as little as $100/2 months.

But then again, I am a energy conservation freak.... someone leaves a light on at home? 3 lashings!!! The dictator has spoken...

Yeah but we have a yard with outdoor lighting, sprinkler system on 3x a week and a toddler here with a caretaker while we are at work M-F doing all kinds of laundry throughout the week as well. Before the kid was here our bill was a lot less but I have friends who live nearby that spend double what we do on their electric bills, especially if they have a pool.

My main point was our bill is less when we keep the air "on" versus turning it off and only running it when we get home. Every house will be different depending on several factors but when I lived in an apartment it was always cheaper, another cost of having a house with a yard versus an apartment.

I was raised with no A/C at all. Talk about low energy bills!

But then again, our climate was much cooler back then.

I don't melt if I'm not in a/c, I just like it. I didn't have a/c out in Boston and coming home to a hot house after working construction all day in the humidity sucked. Worked construction in trenches here in So Cal along with other outside summer jobs to pay my way over the years and now that I'm able to pay for it I damn well will do just that! I max out my 401k, invest and save in other areas so I'm not gonna sweat my a/c bill if I can afford it.. it's a luxury item for sure and I indulge.

^pun intended

Eff this heat man. It too hot to even go out for ice cream. The bikes are even crying for mercy in the garage. Two rear tires went flat.o_O
It's actually about 5 degrees cooler up my way than it was yesterday and I can feel it even though it is far from comfortable. It was cool enough to go out and get yogurts with my daughter after I picked her up from school! :D
