I Rode My Bike Today...

I've watched it quite a few times in slow motion, and it looks like the bike just went a little sideways as you were braking, and then slid out from under you... Joplin is not a stable surface.

Thankfully no harm...

Ha, that was funnier than I envisioned. Good submission .

I would equate Joplin's surface to riding on a combination of glass marbles and bowling balls on top of ice, with some wet leaves thrown in for good measure.

We rode yesterday... Mike's ride to see the old stomping grounds. No PRs were in danger on the climb, and we traded spots here and there. The only excitement was our (mostly mine and the professor's) heated discussion with an e-biker at mile 4.5.

Fun run down Joplin... We were regrouping and watching mike session stuff, so the Strava time is pretty high, but I cut several minutes off the moving time. I'll credit my bald SE4 on the back. It did nothing to slow forward momentum. There were a few heart pumping moments. :p It also looked like the first rocky section in the beginning had fewer rocks to wade through?

Fun romp down STT, and then the Luge... I was headed for PR glory, and then ran into a spandex clad roadie (?) 1/2 way down. He was crawling. Oh well... next time.

24/5000

How on earth did that happen? Well riding on ball bearings can do that I guess. :bang:

Glad you escaped unscathed! How's your bike?
Joplin: where you have to pick your line carefully. Also your back up line, and your back up, back up line, because you never know which one you'll actually end up on. And the line itself will probably shift underneath you.

Bike is fine. She has to be getting pissed at me though. I've laid her down a lot lately.

This should be a sticky for anyone thinking of Joplin for the first time. :Roflmao:Roflmao

What they said above.

Was a bit concerned early last week when this ride was getting put together. I was still having issues walking down the stairs after my tumble 2 weeks ago. Then my work schedule changed and I was supposed to work Saturday morning.

Well Friday, the body responded well. Got the 2nd shift inspector to swap with me on Saturday....so I was in.

@buggravy @Faust29 @mike @theProfessor....9:00 roll was a bit late for my liking, but not my ride so I just rolled with it. Very casual spin up Harding. Twas warm at the bottom, but the wind picked up higher up and cooled it down. Yup, Faust was in a throw down, bare knuckles, good ole' fashioned slobber knocker with Leigh Donovan on her ebike....then again, I don't blame him....her excuses were pretty lame.

Lots of traffic at 4 Corners. The ride to Modjeska Peak wasn't horrible, but wasn't great. Modjeska Peak to Joplin, we had to pedal downhill due to the wind.

Joplin is Joplin. Dropped in and forgot I had way too much psi in my tires. Lowered them and continued on. Trail has changed a bit since June when we did it last. No storming the castle today. Took a much more cautioned approach to it. Cleaned everything by the big rock chicane towards the middle. It's a bit loose in some spots, but still so much fun.

Climb out of Old Camp....got toasty again.

Followed Mike down the first part of STT.....he had a pretty spectactular 2 wheel drift that I wasn't sure he was gonna save...he did. Eventually we swapped spots and I was leading. Typical run down to the Luge.

The Luge was the Luge. Wasn't super fast. A few guys doing some brushing up top.

Good day on the mountain...fun ride.

I’m a closed minded e-bike hater.

Inquiring minds want to know.......summary of the discussion??
Ebiker: great work out, I didn’t know, don’t you know who I am.

@Faust29 : GTFO

Let's leave it at that...

I typed up a lot more details, but it won't serve any constructive purpose. We argued on the mountain, and that's probably where it should stay.

I rode my bike today, even though @Danimal bailed out on me. :( . Todd still made it, so I did one Luge lap with Todd and one by my lonesome. Last time I rode with Todd, I was airlifted. Not this time. Let's keep that streak going, shall we?

Very very people-y as one might expect when Whiting is closed. But, second lap was nearly empty.

I guess the news of the day was someone stole my expensive flag that I installed on Wednesday. It's been replaced by a cheap nylon one that is quite a bit smaller. I don't know why someone would do that. Maybe they were trying to Make America Great Again by flying my USA made flag on the back of their truck. Jackwad...   The Marine Corps flag was replaced also, perhaps at the same time. Semper Fi.

OK, so about the ride - a little warm out there. Santiago Cyn Road is still treacherous with k-rail installed and ZERO room to ride. Luckily, all motorists were super courteous - which is not necessarily common that close to Cook's Corner.

But The Luge was supreme. I ran into the guy @mtnbikej was referring to above doing the brush work (also named Jason). He was riding today, enjoying the fruits of his labor. He's quick as hell. I am so glad to learn that he has been working with rangers in Aliso and Whiting to redesign the godawful work that has been inflicted on 5 -Oaks and other trails. He is a disciple of the Shaman @kioti, so he knows what he's doing.

I think my second run was a tad faster than my first. STRAVA has no clue what it's doing, so I will return to going by feel. Both runs were fast. I've been faster, but not often and not much. I am really gelling with the Rail. Stupid comfortable/confident. How could that go wrong?

Enough blathering. Here's a picture of the new flag replacing my awesome flag. I believe this is a Chinese made nylon flag. 15 mi. 2800' Bikes are fun!

I rode this morning.....wasn't planning to. Was gonna ride this afternoon.

Anyway, Suz was going to join the Non Dot Social ride at the Oaks. I made the last minute decision to go. I didn't get a chance to eat breakfast, but I did have a cup of coffee....but my normal morning routine wasn't followed. Thought we were rolling from IRP at 9:00....I left the house @8:20 knowing it takes about 35-45 mins to get to IRP via Oaks.

Immediately the legs were heavy. My HR monitor wasn't working, so I don't know if I was tired or what. Pushed the pace as I felt I was running late. Got to the park and meeet spot only to find out we weren't rolling til 9:30.

We broke into a few groups....fast/intermediate/kids. Of course I should have gone with the ladies and done the intermediate ride....but noooooo, I headed out with the big boys. Going up Chutes Trail, I could feel my legs weening...not to mention it was already getting warm. Made it to the top, down Cactus...I was third in line...a bit of a different perspective but still fun.

Up BumbleBee and down Grasshopper....again, in the pack. So much dust getting kicked up. Back up Oak, my legs said "enough". I pushed on to the top of Yucca. Led down Yucca....cased the rear tire on the little gap just past the last tower....no harm. At the bottom I threw in the towel. Said farewell to the others, chatted with @cajun for a few mins before slow rolling it over to BumbleGoat and down Goat. Ran into another friend on Sage, so again, social hour began. Finally called it a day and headed home.

Who knows if it would have been a struggle this afternoon or not.

Anyway....too many ebikers out today.

Needed to get another 6k' in for my goal but someone wanted to tag along and had to be back by a certain time to watch their team lose. Oh well, at least he rode. Up Skyline to Sierra Peak. Overlooking charred Chino Hills.

Tagged Beeks then down Troy Lee ish. I took the bypass, Vince went proper. Joined back in halfway down, Vince suddenly on my tail, hikers slowed him down. Almost crashed on the steep wood chute. Still fun on the wrong bike, didn't even drop the seatpost. 16/3000, won't make goal at this rate but I'll take it.:coffee:

I as well got my man-child out of bed and on a bike ride today! But cheated and had spousal-uber drop us off at the trail head. I should probably get an e-bike at this rate! Anyway, we hit some great flattish trails and mostly rolled back home. Hung out at the creek crossing and abandoned caboose in Highland. It was a pretty fun afternoon!

Rode saturday morn, Monroe truck trail was the agreed spot with @NinjaDon and several other friends. Pretty cool at 7am, had just the right combo for warmth and layering. It turned out to be a great day out, one of those "in the zone" kind of days! Flowy goodness!
Hero dirt......check
Great traction.......check
Ideal tire pressures.......check
Suspension dialed......check
Had several PR's up and down, only dabbed Mystic at the end (ridden it a handful of times, techy). Great company.
There were plenty of bikers, some hikers, all friendly except one:mad:.
Wish there were more days like this, but that's why we ride!

@UPSed and Tony gave me a nice tour of Cheseboro and Simi Valley today. Jennifer joined us for a little as well.

38mi +/- 6,000ft if I recall. Got a bit warm, high in low 80s so we were all suffering a bit by the end.

There's an amazing amount of trail between Simi and the Santa Monicas. Will be going back again at some point.

I didn't take a ton of pictures as we kept moving pretty steady, but got a few decent shots.

Thanks for the tour, Ed!

Thanks for coming up, @evdog! It was nice to finally meet you. Yeah, for whatever reason we were all suffering a little yesterday. Let me know when you're out this way again. There are several routes to be had in the Santa Monicas.

Is that the creek crossing that we did in the original 100 mile Redlands ride?

Wow, what a douche move. Hard to imagine the kind of person who would do something like that

Yeah, that part of Santiago Canyon is way too sketchy for me right now. A woman was just killed there Sunday afternoon ...

Not attempting to rehash, just gotta ask.
1) Was it really Leigh Donovan?
2) Did she really say, "Do you know who I am?

Ha hah haha haha hah! Do you know who I am?

3) Did you tell her to GTFO?
I could hug you, but I know you hate hugs... :sneaky::whistling:

just means the cyclists need to take the whole lane. With no bike lane....we are legally allowed to.
I almost got run off the road today while rolling through my local outdoor mall. Its clearly signed that bikes can use the full lane but this grumpy old f##k was clearly not gonna let a guy on a bike get in his way. He actually went over a double yellow line on a very narrow two way road to go around me and I was already traveling at the posted speed limit.

Good thing about this spot we are taking about, is there are delineators on one side and K-Rail on the other....no going around.
