I Rode My Bike Today...

Last minute decision to join @Lost Kiwi and @DangerDirtyD for the first few miles of the Harding/Joplin loop. I figured I would ride up Santiago Canyon and Modjeska grade and a mile or two up Harding. I made it just beyond the mile 4 marker and I was finished. Harding is significantly steeper than Maple Springs. Temperature was in the low 90’s with little wind. I wished them well and the boys kept going. Seems there was an incident with Simon, which I hope he’ll share but no broken bones.

You were almost there! It gets significantly easier at the 5 mile mark.

San Clemente Singletracks on Saturday. They have added a number of really fun jumps throughout the length of one of the long flow trails (next to Holeshot). I had a lot of fun hitting those. Some were wooden, some dirt. I missed a few because I did not know they were there, but will have to return soon. Not crowded at all, and no rattlesnakes which is unusual for that place this time of year. I did see a California King (first time) and a Gopher Snake.

Whiting & The Luge this morning. I took an alternate route this time, parked at Wahoo's went through the backside of Whiting and dropped Mustard. That is a pretty fun bomb down for a fire road, despite feeling like I was in Frogger for all the hikers coming up. I then did two loops of Cattle Pond, back up Mustard, dropped Cactus and then over to STT and on to The Luge. I hit the full length of Sage Scrub and out. STT was empty for the most part. I got passed by two eBikers, one of whom felt the need to apologize for being on his "cheater bike" (his words). At least some of them apparently feel guilty. :Roflmao

This weekend was the first time I have ridden three days in a row in a very long time. It felt good, although I do not want to make it a habit.

Nice RR! Thanks for coming out! Maybe if you slowed down a little on the climbing...

Kinda knew yesterday was going to be a bit brutal riding in the afternoon heat but I haven't done Harding or Joplin before and the chance to do it with a superstar like @DangerDirtyD was to good an opportunity to pass up! @Ocpop texted me a bit before we left asking if it was ok to tag along for a bit. Awesome to see him back on the bike and doesn't appear to have lost to much fitness (I think the stories of struggling were a bit of sandbagging personally).
We met up just above Cooks Corner, I was a bit perplexed to start with as the vehicle that turned up sure looked like @DangerDirtyD's but what got out wasn't what I'd previously associated and there was no blue Smash on the back. Instead it was a svelte lycra clad beast of a man handing out free caps of all things. I would have probably run for the hills if it was candy. He then announced that today he would be riding his wives bike, ok fella, whatever pods your peas.....
Set of up Santiago and then turned onto Modjeska (I'd be accused of trying to break him by adding that bit on later), we bombed down the other side and then ignored all the local signs telling us to F@ck off and cruised up to Harding. I ain't going to lie, Harding pretty much sucked. Cooling breezes were far and few between and the first 4 miles was hot, damn hot. The views though from up there are something else though. Could see everything.

@Ocpop kept telling us he was going to turn around but didn't
IMG_5616.jpg

We finally made it to an area that had some shade and a bit of wind (pic below) and then a little bit later rounded a corner to see Modjeska peak and 4 corners off in the distance.
IMG_5618.JPG

Few cars at 4 corners and some people suspiciously eyeing of @DangerDirtyD in his sexy suit. We plowed on and finally made it to the top of Joplin. The seats were put down for the first time in the entire ride, a couple of deep breaths and we dropped over the side.... Holy hell thats a trail! I think I'd decided about a minute in if I made it out at the bottom in one piece I was going to be doing well. It was chunky, dry and dusty. The amount the trail changes as you bomb down is startling, one moment scree and rocks, the next your in trees trying not to get decapitated, then rock gardens, drops, a stream and all sorts of other things. I nearly had an epic OTBs but somehow saved it. Ended up walking a few spots, just missing lines and ending up in completely the wrong parts of the trail a few times. Plus some of the more techie parts are just to much for me and my bike tbh. We made it to Old Camp though both intact, I think I took some poison oak to the face as the mouth and lips were feeling well funky.
Got out of Old Camp and up onto STT, riding back into a setting sun with the dust made it interesting at times, I managed to puncture part way down so we took a moment to chill and contemplate life. Stacked it just before we got back to the Luge, one of those innocuous ones where you pick a side of the rut to be on come round the corner and realize it was the wrong side as your part of the trail disappears into a bike sized hole. I tried to pull up in time and didn't. Managed to skillfully break my fall with my head it appears, split a knee open a bit and took some skin of the elbows.
Took it easy down the Luge after that and then cruised back to the cars. Epic afternoon / evening on the bikes with a couple of alright guys.
Need to go shopping for a new helmet, might admit defeat and look at getting some pads to carry in the backpack as well. Thanks for the invite Dio

That’s the report I’ve been waiting for! Awesome stuff...

Harding is more enjoyable in the dark... You can’t see what’s ahead, and your mind breaks it into manageable segments. :p You guys get props for doing it in the middle of the day.

Holy shyt, best documented effort in a long time! Well told, too!:thumbsup:

You can be proud of making it through that one in good style. The word defeat has no place in your report... You did it all and did not fall prey to one notorious Pied Piper of the steeps. Excellent!!!! :)

That was awesome! Great description of Joplin - and of @DangerDirtyD!

Up Maxwell to @CT for some much needed trail work. There are three large sections of scrub oak that will shred arms and legs like hamburger meat, so I brought my clippers and went to work. The trail is good to go, but I did come home with only one glove, no clippers and shredded arms(should've worn a long sleeve )

A Monday morning Brown and el Prieto ride from the JPL lot. Although the pace was comfortable for the first few miles, it picked up before the top. I felt it on the heavy bike! :D

Coming down was a riot... Watch out for the soft bushes!

18.73 miles and 2,215 feet.

One of these days, I need to turn left here... Maybe on the other bike, though.

Early morning ride for me - first day off work. Nice way to kick off my three week break.

Returned to the scene of the crime, and didn’t need an airlift this time! I adjusted my line a tad left of the last time. And about 40% slower.

I wish you all would put these in their own ride reports. Good stuff! But not searchable in a huge thread like this.

Fantastic report though.

And some loud brakes!

The hikers said "How many"
Just me and the Walrus

San Gabes Front Range Dawn Patrol this morning with @buggravy, @rossage, and @Faust29.

We climbed to KB trailhead then flew back down to the lower saddle. Cruised through Millard and then up Lower Sunset to our turn around point. Flew back down Lower Sunset and rolled over to El P for the finish. Good times through there as usual but some of the sections are starting to get blown out. I was a bit surprised to see some hikers deeper into El P as we descended. We all made it through and hit the little side detour chunk trail before dropping back down onto the pavement for the roll out. Good times with good company.

17.68 miles

Fun ride this morning at the crack of dawn with the hooligans... @rossage , @SnakeCharmer and @buggravy . I never felt 100%- almost felt hung over. I think it was something I ate last night. :whistling: :p :whistling:

The lower Sunset single track was a nice add on, which might get incorporated into the gravel bike loop...

No crashes, but Mike got to witness a slow speed dismount... And the switchback that I made it around last time looked different today. Coach said to go left, but my bike is stubborn and went right. :cautious: :p

23/2900

Fun times!

Always fun riding with the San Gabe wrecking crew. Not my day today, and El P in particular had my number. No incidents, just lots of dabs and a couple short, but demoralizing walked sections. I like @rossage 's comment in the other thread about recognizing and honoring a vulnerability being a sign of a seasoned rider, so I'll go with that . 17.8, 2,670, and home by 0930 .

@Derkderkall bummer we missed you. Would have been awesome to meet you and share some dirt.
