+100 degree club

I feel like a champion! This is in no way an attempt to compete with the epics of @StrandLeper, @mtnbikej, @mike, @Faust29, @Mikie, @Tom the Bomb, and several others I neglected to mention here, you know who you are...but today I took a 5 mile/400' out and back lunchtime ride along the foothills of Sugarloaf Mountain in Riverside, complete with unhealthful air (sarcastic thanks to those of you who remove your catalytic converters and diesel filters from your vehicles to solidify your legacies as total jackasses) and biologist Maria, an esteemed coworker.

Maria is a vegan with a 35 pound bike. Her daily fuel intake definitely helped her CRUSH it today! Any undulation in terrain was managed with a swift pedal and bent elbow.

So, while the 100 Degree Club was in session, our office manager/lead administrator gets the approval from an actual manager to dismiss everyone from work today because the AC broke. Did I mention I feel like a champion?

If we factor in the heavy bike, lousy air, 100+ degree temps, and blazing sun, I think you and Maria rode about 50/6,000 today. I rolled out of the garage on my bike to the street and back. You win the prize!
I may need some extra points for sitting at a baseball game today, though... Isn't there a school rule about temps? o_O:gag:

There probably is a school rule about temps. After all, OSHA mandates shade shelters for outdoor crews when temps rise above 85 degrees. I still don't know how they provide that for emergency responders, survey crews, and many construction sites.

I heard a 28yr old fitness trainer died from heat exhaustion in AZ while mountain biking over the weekend. What a terrible way to go! Hopefully dimentia set in fast and the victim took herself to a happy place before she perished.

My River Rat days experience has kept me pretty safe in the heat. Finished my 25-miler around 11 and it was 97. Definitely felt the heat the last 1/2 hour. I didn't stop dripping for twenty minutes post ride. Drinking water early and often.

This has trickled down to many SIC numbers. The heat my machine shop generates is so welcome in the winter. I follow the HIPP guidelines and stock the fridge with chilled water; revisit the heat exhaustion/heat stroke training; break out the fans for each machine; offer extra breaks to cool off and the guys' favorite - lunch time in the office with the AC blasting. Miserable but manageable. Yipppee, time to start welding...

Racing Over the Hump tonight. Should only be mid 80's.
Evening road rides Wednesday and Friday to stay out of the heat (and 'cuz I have to work during the day.)
It should cool off a bit by Sunday - me and some friends are gonna do a road ride Irvine to Oceanside Train stations - the coast should keep us cooler.

PS Anyone know a good food and beer place in O'side near the pier or train station for our post ride lunch?

PSS My first cyclocross race was 105º F at Irvine Lake. Since then, I've had about half a dozen or so pushing 100. Rode some in PHX in August a few years back. Some MTB and road - up to 112ºF. It actually didn't feel all that bad when moving - but once you stopped, the sweat flood was huge.

So... Where's everybody riding this weekend? I'm wondering if I should try and do an early start smaller ride on both days? Not sure how that would go over with the wife, but it's one way to get some mileage...

Night riding isn't gonna help all that much (I lie, sure it will), but we are still doing DangerD's night mission Saturday evening. The plan is morphing into a non-shuttle affair. We are looking at HJ>Joplin now. Hopefully nobody will be crying to mama at Old Camp (hehe @konakc...pretty much been there).

Faust, I'll rudely speak for DDD and say you are welcome to join any or all of it.

PS: 4am start sounds like hell at about 3am, but heaven from 4:01 on...

This is tempting...

The last time I was on a bicycle at 4am, I was riding in a freezer with @mike and @rossage, and it was glorious! Way to take advantage of the twilight @mtnbikej; only you and the foxes will be out there! @Faust29, yes you are welcome to come out with us on our third itineration of our Saturday night mission.

@scan, the 100 degree club is a personal proving ground I share with this community because it regards bicycles and we are encouraged to post about bicycles. I used to have the fortune of fieldwork in the Southwest summers and watch for the monsoons to relieve the crews. Only lightning would cut the days short. Since my job is mostly desk oriented these days, I enjoy getting that warm feeling of the good 'ol days where the heat dictates the pace and people's attitudes determine the success of the project. Some folks don't handle the heat well, and that's fine. I don't care if you don't join the 100 degree club; although you are welcome to participate and ride with me anytime, but I also don't care for being told your limitations are my limitations. Refer to the Lawn Dart Dumbass for additional information.
