Woodworking!

I do some woodworking when I have the time... always enjoy sharing the pics!

Before. One big ass sapelle board. (I had to have them cut it in half to get it into my SUV).

After. One sapelle custom rocking chair.

Very Nice, How long did that take you?

Hard to add up the hours, because I moved really slowly. More than 50% of the time was in creating the forms. I would guess about 3 weeks of labor but I could make another in half the time now.

That said... it is a hobby so I was doing it for fun. I give away all my work.

Photo of the forms I had to build - just for this chair.

Auhh, you got's talent! Costom beauty! I do wish I could create like that!

You could. Anyone can. It just takes patience and an eye for detail. Nice tools don't hurt either.

The reality is - if you are working for the joy of it - you can be amazed at what you can build!

I do have the patience and an eye for detail, my problem is it would take away what little time I have to ride my bike, very important medicine. I'll say it again, the chair is beautiful art! I will be sure to look at the link for more marvaling, which will explain where you got your talent. Never hurts to have an awesome teacher.

Bump for love... and because I am finishing up some bathrooms... I take 50% longer, but do a 200% better job.

To be honest it is really hard to find good labor.

I negotiated with my wife that I would do our son's bathroom (instead of contract it) if I got to buy nice Wolf ovens for the kitchen :)

That is an awesome piece you created. If you only do woodworking when “you have the time”. What is it that you do?

I am a finish carpenter. That’s what I am, that’s what I do.

That piece is more for a forniture maker or a wood carver.

What is it that you do?

I'm retired. I ride bikes and look at my wife :)

Man I wish I had you around on the last project that I contracted out for my house. The contractor couldn't find the right window casing trim so they were going to go with a cheap Home Depot solution that wouldn't match any of the other windows in the house. I told them it was unacceptable... and then took them into the space and pointed out all the woodwork that still needed to be done. I asked the project manager - aren't you planning on having a finish carpenter on this job? Their reply... "well a lot of the guys are pretty good at a lot of different jobs...".

I ended up fabricating the window trim myself. It wasn't hard - just a custom piece that was a weird dimension with a bevel to it. Something you would learn how to make in your second week of high school wood shop.

Nowadays I swear if people can't buy it stock from Home Depot, they think it doesn't exist.
